Key West Charter Boat Fishing
We took a trip down to Key West. While we were there we climbed aboard the Salty Goat Fishing charter boat. Although we didn't have the most successful day of fishing (I believe due to a gentleman bringing a Banana on the boat) we still had a great time! Beverly and I only caught a couple non-keeper fish so we went on our merry way after the day was done. We got a tan and saw the beautiful Tarpon feeding dockside. After the boat we went to Dante's for a snack and then back to our Hostel the NYAH. Look out for more videos from our trip to come!
Key West Florida Vacation by Boat!

The Best of Key West
If the island of Key West was a bar, it would be called the “Ends of the Earth” bar and rightly so. There is only one road leading into Key West and it is 113 miles from the mainland of Florida to the city limits.
It’s a 4 hour drive from Miami, 3.5 hours by ferry from Ft Myers and just 50 minutes to fly from Miami. But no matter how you get here, you will soon see it is unlike any place else within the continental USA.
It never freezes here nor does it really ever get cold here. Even in January, the average temperature is 69 degrees and usually in the mid 70s. That makes this a year around destination however the summer is the most active time period with lots to do. We will show you some the most popular activities available to visitors.
The most popular things to do all revolve around water. For divers, the Great Florida Reef is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. It extends up to 4 miles out from the shore and extends from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas, a length of 170 miles. There are several sunken ships to dive on as well.
Fishing is a huge draw to Key West. You can charter a boat to take you where the fish are plentiful. You can stay within short distance of the island or you can head for the deep waters where the big fish live.
Playing IN the water is available for all ages. There are both private and public beaches scattered around the island. The largest beach open to the public is Smathers Beach. It is over half a mile in length and is on the south side of the island right next to Roosevelt Blvd, the perimeter road around the island.
Higgs Beach is a little further down the road, (Roosevelt turns into Atlantic Blvd). The beach surrounds the Key West Garden Club, one of the island's last remaining free tourist attractions
If you would rather see the water from above, parasailing is the way to do it. Key West looks different when you are floating 300 feet in the air. It is pretty quiet up there too. There are several providers to choose from.
For those who prefer who wish to stay land based, there is still plenty to do. While there are plenty of places to stay on the island, you are required to visit Duval street, the narrow mile long main drag. The famous as well as those of us not so famous have walked this street and spent time in the bars and eateries that line the street. Start at the south end where you can dip a toe into the Straits of Florida (part of the Atlantic Ocean). Walk a little over a mile north and you can dip a toe in the Gulf of Mexico. Arrive at the Gulf side near dusk and you can wander over to Mallory Square where watching the sunset has become a nightly ritual. More on Mallory Square later.
While you are in this part of town, catch a ride on the conch train. They will show you all kinds of interesting locations on the island including Hemingway’s house, Audubon House and Gardens, Key West Lighthouse Museum, Harry S. Truman Little White House, Key West Aquarium, and the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum. You can always come back to these places on your own at a later time now that you know where they are located.
Key West is a great destination to visit and truly has something for everyone. The locals are friendly and laid back. Visiting here is almost like visiting another country but you are still on U S soil. It will take several days to do everything but no matter what you do and where you go, the evenings belong to Mallory Square.
While the sun setting into the ocean is a draw all of its own, the spectacle of the square stands alone in its uniqueness. The crowd is festive and there are multiple performers scattered around the square. Whether it is balloon art, juggling acts, music or sword swallowing, you can find this and much more here at Mallory Square.
The Worst of Key West
While our little Key at the end of a 100 mile strip of keys is a wonderful place to visit, there are some things that blur the picture of the perfect getaway.
Just getting here can be more of a challenge than desired. There is only one way in (and out) by car and that is along the 113 mile highway between the mainland and Key West. The current 4 lane road is a big improvement over the 2 lane road that served the Keys up through the first part of the 70’s but it still takes 4 hours to get here from the mainland. There is a ferry from the Ft Myers area that also takes nearly 4 hours. Or you can fly in - 50 minutes from Miami. Try to enjoy the journey.
The weather can be a deciding factor on time of year you want to visit. Hurricane season can have its challenges. The season officially runs from June 1 to the end of November but the peak time for storms generally occur in September.

FLORIDA KEYS VACATION ???? FISHING IN THE FLORIDA KEYS!????
The kids wanted to go fishing in the Florida Keys, so we went off to World Wide Sportsman (Bass Pro) to pick up some supplies and fishing we went!
The Florida Keys:
The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba. The Florida Keys are between about 23.5 and 25.5 degrees North latitude.
The climate of the Keys is defined as tropical savanna according to Köppen climate classification. More than 95 percent of the land area lies in Monroe County, but a small portion extends northeast into Miami-Dade County, such as Totten Key. The total land area is 137.3 square miles (356 km2). As of the 2010 census the population was 73,090 with an average density of 532.34 per square mile (205.54/km2), although much of the population is concentrated in a few areas of much higher density, such as the city of Key West, which has 32% of the entire population of the Keys. The US Census population estimate for 2014 is 77,136.
The city of Key West is the county seat of Monroe County. The county consists of a section on the mainland which is almost entirely in Everglades National Park, and the Keys islands from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas.
The Keys were originally inhabited by Calusa and Tequesta Native Americans, and were later found and charted by Juan Ponce de León in 1513. De León named the islands Los Martires (The Martyrs), as they looked like suffering men from a distance. Key is derived from the Spanish word cayo, meaning small island. For many years, Key West was the largest town in Florida, and it grew prosperous on wrecking revenues. The isolated outpost was well located for trade with Cuba and the Bahamas, and was on the main trade route from New Orleans. Improved navigation led to fewer shipwrecks, and Key West went into a decline in the late nineteenth century.

FLORIDA | Episode 18 | Key West, Florida 2018 | Opening Week Lobster Season
Florida lobster season officially began August 6th, 2018 and we we fortunate enough to make the 13 hour drive down to the farthest point in the continental U.S. to take part. Join us as Da Spencer Adventure meets up with a bunch of new friends at the epicenter of Lobstering in the southern United States. It was our first try at it and I must say we did pretty good. The plan was to find enough keepers to enjoy at least one good lobster meal for the family. Thanks to Captain Frank and the crew of the Lady Elaine, we were able to bring in a great catch! Ensure you are properly licensed and adhere to all State and Federal regulations. As always, leave the land and sea better than you found it for future generations to come.
The Florida Keys stretch span approximately 100 miles from Key Largo to the North down to Key West in the south. What a blast it was enjoying the water in one of our absolute favorite vacation spots on the east coast. Please visit the websites below to start planning your trip to the Keys:

8 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Key West
8 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Key West Florida | The southernmost city in the continental United States, Key West features a unique mixture of cultural influences. The colorful history of the four by two-mile island is filled with tales of poverty and prosperity, death and rebirth. The early economic ventures in Key West involved wrecking, where locals salvaged the goods of ships run aground in the shallow waters, and sponge fishing. The architecture is mainly Caribbean with many houses built out of coral-rock or salvaged ship-boards, while others came directly from the Bahamas. They were dismantled and shipped, then re-assembled here. The food is Afro-Caribbean and Spanish and there is a certain tropical, laid-back feel to the town.

Feeding Tarpon at Robbie's on Islamorada in the Florida Keys
We went to Robbie's Marina on the island of Islamorada in the Florida keys to hand feed the Tarpon and pelicans. We didn't want to feed the pelicans but they stole our fish. That place is a must stop if you are driving hwy 1 down to Key West. Top Ten stop in the keys. The tide was down so they didn't jump out to get the fish like we would have liked but it was still super fun.
