THAILAND’S HIDDEN SECRET - Phuket To Khao Lak
Today I visited Khao Lak and its beautiful surroundings. We travelled from Phuket to Khao Lak by bus which was really cheap, and we got to see Thailand at its best.
if you're ever in Thailand, and like to visit a nice quiet place to relax then Khao Lak is highly recommended. Everything was unbelievable!
It was raining heavily the first day and we couldn't stay long but here is a list of the places we visited around Khao Lak Thailand.
-Khao Lak Beach: The Khao Lak beaches are the main reason why so many people choose this tranquil area of Phang Nga Province as their holiday destination.
-Apsara Resort Khao Lak: Set on a sandy, white beach of Khao-Lak in Thailand's Phang-Nga province, this resort offers a perfect backdrop for a lifetime of memories. Apsara Beachfront Resort & Villa is definitely the place to stay in Khao Lak.
Khao Lak Town: For many people this is “Khao Lak Town” though officially it is Baan La On – but certainly this town area is often what many people have come to know first once they arrive. There are two main townships in Khao Lak, the main one is Bang La On where there are most restaurants, bars and shops and is often referred to as Khao Lak, Khao Lak Town, Khao Lak Centre or just Khao Lak. It is the first town you reach coming over the mountain from Phuket. _________________________________________________________________

How to do KHAO SOK National Park INDEPENDENTLY
After visiting Samui seeing some friends we decided to go visit Khao Sok National Park before we head to Chiang Mai. It was the best decision we made!!
We took a ferry from Samui to mainland Surat Thani, from here we took a 2 hour mini bus journey to the national park. This ticket cost us 750 bhat (one way) including the bus transfer from hotel to pier in Samui.
The mini bus dropped us at the bus stop just 1.5km from Khao Sok town, a 50 bhat taxi on the back of a pick up took us to our hotel Country Resort.
For £17 a night we stayed in an AC room with free access to their outdoor pool.
The journey to the lake took just over an hour, recommend getting to the lake before the mini buses arrive so around 9am. Just a note that when leaving at 8am or before there is heavy fog/mist along the journey which is cold! So wear long trousers and a jumper in the morning as its a long journey to be cold. But as soon as the sun breaks through it warms up QUICK!
Here are some prices from here onwards:
* Moped hire - 300 per day
* Fuel - 100 (enough to Cheow Lan Lake and back)
* National Park (including lake) entrance fee - 300 per person
* long tail boat hire for 3 hours - 2000
The lake was one of the most beautiful sites we have seen and highly recommend driving yourself to the lake and back. Avoid big tours where your crammed on a mini bus then boat!
In the end hiring our own boat and total day costs including the moped was cheaper than a day tour!
Hope this was helpful and let us know if you choose to visit Cheow Lan.

Bang Niang Beach, Khao Lak - true-beachfront.com
Bang Niang Beach, one of Khao Lak's more active beaches, with idyllic tropical sand and clear water. Restaurants, bars and massage huts line the beach. Video shows good value, mid-range beachfront resorts & hotels.
Bang Niang Beach is the first beach far away from Khao Lak mountain – which is seen in the background here – where the hills and rocks have been left behind. Here is a long, straight stretch of unbroken sand. Bang Niang also has a commercial area with shops, restaurants, a market and ATMs etc to the back of the beach.
In high season the water is typical of this coast; warm, calm and clear – ideal for swimming, and excellent for children big and small. Many massage huts are on offer, and some beach sports like catamaran sailing, kayaking and volleyball are available. There are several attractive beachfront restaurants here.
It's not a lot of activity, but as much as one can find in a chill-out and relax destination like Khao Lak.
Bang Niang boasts some excellent quality resorts, and more variety than on any other beach in Khao Lak. There are still a few cheaper beachfront accommodations here, and one distinctly boutique, design resort in casa de la flora.
La Flora Resort is one of the large, well-established resorts with beachfront villas and regular rooms in the gardens behind.
The huge Mukdara Beach Villas has both the biggest grounds of any resort here, and the biggest swimming pools by far. It also has garden villas tastefully spread through extensive tropical gardens, plus hotel blocks.
Ramada Khao Lak Resort is the other up-market, professionally managed resort. It too has spacious lawns and gardens, and rooms in villas and hotel blocks. Ramada faces the widest part of Bang Niang Beach, where even at high tide the sand
These problems are restricted to the small resorts at the north end of Bang Niang Beach. They began with the road being too close to the beach, forcing land owners to build too close to the ocean. Now the beachfront hotels are fighting a desperate battle against the annual monsoon waves. Who know what this part of Bang Niang Beach will look like in a few years.
Snorkelling In Similan Islands Thailand
Similan Islands in Thailand are famous for diving and the waters are brimming with amazing marine life. A perfect destination for a family trip.
Complete guide of the islands
Surin and Similan Islands off the coast of Thailand in Andaman Sea is regarded as a one of the best dive destinations in the planet.
Similan is a group of 9 islands and Surin is further north closer to Burma (Myanmar) than Thailand.
Richileu Rock between Surin and Similan is regarded as the best dive site of the region.
Where are Similan Islands?
Similan is 70 kms off the coast of Phuket towards west. The only way to reach the islands is by boat from Phuket or Khao Lak.
How to explore?
The whole area is under national park and best explored in a live aboard. The trips are costly and so it is better to start saving now.
Alternatively day trips are available from Khaolak ( remember that trips depart from Khao Lak and not Phuket). The best option is to stay in beautiful calm Khao Lak and explore the islands over couple of days and also enjoy few days of dive and snorkel.
Khaolak to Phuket takes 2 hours and depends of the traffic condition. So to travel with ease and leisure, stay at Khao Lak.
When to visit?
The park is closed in monsoon between May and October. Rest of the year is always great.
Where to Stay?
In Khao Lak there are many hotels and resorts. Choose any hotel on the beach and expect the best hospitality. The area is relatively small and you can walk to the market from the hotels. You can easily spend a week in Khao Lak exploring the islands.
Book hotels in advance if you are visiting in peak season like Christmas and New Year.
How to reach Khao Lak?
We booked taxi from Cheaper Than Hotel run by the guy called BOSS. Very good service and prompt replies. No better way than this to reach and depart Khao Lak.
Best things to do –
Divng and snorkelling day excursions to the Similan and Suring islands are extremly popular. Even better is to go to the live-aboard trips. The islands are 1 1/2 hours by speed boat. Live aboards offer a more relaxing trip without the mass tourism.
Day tours to islands of Similan and Surin is also very popular.
Else relax on the never ending beaches and enjoy the sunsets.
Note of Caution – The diving in this region is famous. The top dive sites get sold out very fast. Always better to pre-book the dives. Most dive shops have online presence and payment can be made via paypal etc.
Also the area does not offer OW certification in most cases. So better to get certified somewhere else. Most divers are AOW or Nitrox divers.

Rob's Thai Experience - 5 hour overnight bus ride from Bangkok to Surin, Issan, Thailand
A 5 hour overnight bus ride from Bangkok to Surin, Issan, Thailand was quite good actually. Return trip was during the day and 7 hours because of traffic. Last time we flew there landing in Buriram, about an hour away from Surin. Flying took just as long considering airport and travel time combined, not any more comfortable and of course much more expensive

It was terrible, but fortunately our family is safe and we are now planning to leave Phuket.
11. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) David Shu, Tourist:
I feel very sad. The hotel where we were staying is located in southern Phuket so it was not damaged. But when we talked to the people at the airport we realised how many people had died.
12. SOUDNBITE: (English) Catherine Breen, Tourist:
About 30 percent of the island''s been devastated and lucky enough no-one was hurt, so we''re very fortunate, very fortunate that nothing happened to us. It was very scary and our villa was totally demolished, so had we been sleeping, we would have been in a lot of trouble.
(Question: Where were you?)
We were up by a pool, so we were quite high and we actually saw it coming in. It was only little surges and then all of a sudden it was getting bigger and bigger and we just ran for the mountains.
13. SOUNDBITE: (German) Natasha Urban, Tourist:
We arrived here in Phuket yesterday evening and luckily nothing happened to us. But a lot of our friends were injured in Khao Lak. Two of them were seriously injured, two are missing. We don''t know what''s happened (to them) and that''s why we can''t continue our holiday here. What with all the dead and missing we want to leave today and you can see what''s going on here. I think many feel the same way. We were lucky.

STORYLINE:
There was chaos at Phuket''s international airport on Monday, as hundreds of tourists, escaping from the devastated Thai holiday resort, tried to board planes for Bangkok.
Tourists crowded into the airport terminal and waited in long queues for their flights.
Officials said free flights would be offered to anyone who wanted to leave in order to lessen pressure on the island''s damaged infrastructure and shortage of hotel rooms.
Many of the tourists were bandaged and brought to the airport in ambulances.
Those leaving expressed relief that they had survived the effects of Sunday''s earthquake and giant tidal waves.
What with all the dead and missing we want to leave today and you can see what''s going on here. I think many feel the same way. We were lucky, said German tourist Natasha Urban.
Aid packages also arrived at the airport on Monday to be delivered to the worst affected areas.
But despite the devastation, some tourists continued to arrive at Phuket''s airport for their holidays.
The popular resort of Phuket - a favourite with Western and Asian tourists - was struck by a tsunami (giant ocean wave) on Sunday, triggered by a huge earthquake off Indonesia''s Sumatra island.
In Thailand alone, 866 people were killed and 7,306 were injured in the disaster, the interior ministry has said.

Bangkok to Patong Beach, Phuket
Bangkok to Patong Beach, Phuket 2016
A journey from Don Mueang Airport to the white sands of Patong beach, Phuket.
Costs:
Air Asia flight: 1839 baht (booked 1 day before travelling)
Meter Taxi: 735 baht
The meter taxi is much more expensive in Phuket than anywhere else in Thailand. This meter started at 50 baht and went up in increments of 5, as opposed to every other meter taxi I've seen in Thailand that start at 35 baht and go up in increments of 2. The other option was to pay an upfrontt rate of 800 baht to take a taxi.
I could have taken the cheaper minibus to Patong (180 baht) but it takes more time, is more dangerous, and they also stop to try and hard sell you day trips.

Our Jungle House - Thailand Khao Sok National Park
Is a beautiful place to stay if you are visiting Surat Thani Khao Sok National Park.
I stayed at Riverside Cottage, the room is clean and neat, quietly seated next to river. A good distance 3 minutes walk from reception area.
Had a pleasant stay and highly recommended if you are one prefer quietness. Walking to town at night is not advisable unless you have quite a big group. Be prepared services requested from the resort are more expensive like calling a cab, massage, river tubing and other activities.
