Hoorn beautiful authentic harbour - Holland Holiday
A beautiful old city, about 40 kilometers from Amsterdam, is Hoorn.
In the past it was a succesful trading port situated on the Zuiderzee.
After closing this sea with a 30 kilometer barrier dam the Zuiderzee became a lake, called IJsselmeer.
After the construction of a dam between Enkhuizen and Lelystad the lake south of the dam was called Markermeer.
Today Hoorn is a bustling marina for water sports.
At the end of the afternoon the traditional ships enter the harbour, often with groups that make a trip on the Dutch waters, such as the IJsselmeer, Markermeer and the Wadden Sea.
These old Dutch flat-bottomed ships are called 'De Bruine Vloot', which means 'The Brown Fleet'.
The name refers to the brown sails many of these boats are equipped with.
Did you know that Cape Horn was named after the city of Hoorn?
In the year 1616 explorer Willem Corneliszoon Schouten named the cape after his city of birth.
The old town has lively shopping streets with pleasant terraces.
Like many other towns in the Netherlands Hoorn has a history with cheese. In summer there is a cheese market every week.
We take a look in a cheese shop that has hardly changed for generations.
You can also visit several interesting museums.
The collection of the Westfries Museum shows you the cultural history of the 17th century, the Golden Century.
Museum 20th Century houses an impressive collection of objects from the 20th century that will appeal to both young and old alike!
Or enjoy old masterpieces of poster design in the ‘Affiche Museum’.
Make a trip through time with a historic steam tram from Hoorn to another little harbour, Medemblik. Or a trip in combination with a boat trip to ancient port Enkhuizen.
You will enjoy your stay in Hoorn!

Cheese market in Hoorn
Video created with the Socialcam app on iPhone:
Holland's Cheese Market in Hoorn
Cheese. The oldest cheese market in the Netherlands is the cheese market in Hoorn, the historic port town just north of Amsterdam. A cheese market with roots in the Golden Age and even further back in time. A cheese market that is still going strong: visit this weekly market from mid-June to the end of August, acquaint yourself with this age-old trade. It’s free! At times, it might seem a little funny; briskly stepping men in their impeccably white suits and their straw hats with colourful ribbons, carrying wooden racks filled with cheeses between them. Yet this scene is part of an age-old choreography, with each step having a meaning all its own. The stacking, the judging, the weighing: it all plays a role. The colourful history of the West-Friesland region is also highlighted through folk dancing in authentic nineteenth-century costumes.

Netherlands - Hoorn & Kinderdijk
Highlights of our visit to Hoorn & Kinderdijk on a recent Viking river cruise of the Netherlands.
Alkmaar Cheese Market, marché aux fromages, Holland
There are five cheese markets operating in the Netherlands. Woerden is a modern working commercial cheese market. Four, Alkmaar, Gouda, Edam and Hoorn, are like traditional merchant cheese markets as operated in the post-medieval period, re-enacted during the summer months for tourists. The shows are today surrounded by stalls selling all things traditional to the Dutch culture, including cheese.
Dutch cheese farmers traditionally brought their cheeses to the market square in town to sell. Teams (vemen) of official guild cheese-porters (kaasdragers), identified by differently coloured straw hats associated with their forwarding company, carried the farmers' cheese on barrows, which typically weighed about 160 kilograms. Buyers then sampled the cheeses and negotiated a price using a ritual system called handjeklap in which buyers and sellers clap each other's hands and shout prices.[1] Once a price is agreed, the porters carry the cheese to the weighing house (Waag), and scale of their company.
