Nutcracker at Chele La Pass, Paro, Bhutan
The spotted nutcracker, Eurasian nutcracker, or just nutcracker, it could also be misnamed as Chocolate crow (mainly in Norway) (Nucifraga caryocatactes) is a passerine bird slightly larger than the Eurasian jay. It has a much larger bill and a slimmer looking head without any crest. The feathering over its body is predominantly a chocolate brown with distinct white spots and streaks. The wings and upper tail are virtually black with a greenish-blue gloss. It is one of three species of nutcracker. The large-spotted nutcracker (Nucifraga multipunctata), was formerly considered a subspecies. The other, Clark's nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana), occurs in western North America.
The spotted nutcracker is a dark brown, broad-winged, short-tailed corvid. Body plumage is mid to dark chocolate brown, heavily spotted with white on face, neck, mantle and underparts. It has a large white loral spot, a white eye-ring, blackish brown cap extending onto the nape, dark blackish wings with a greenish-blue gloss, all white vent, and dark tail with white corners above and a white terminal band on the undertail. In flight, broad wings, white vent and short tail are noticeable; the flight undulating. The black bill is slender and rather long, sharply pointed, and varies in size amongst races. The iris, legs and feet are black.
Nutcrackers range from 32–38 cm in length (from tip of beak to tip of tail) and have a wingspan ranging from 49–53 cm.

Most beautiful road journey in Bhutan || Chale La Pass || Paro to Haa Valley || SOLO Bhutan - 11
Chelela Pass is the highest motorable point in Bhutan and 13000 feet above sea level. This pass connect the Haa and Paro valleys. The pass is located 35 km from Paro and 26 km from Haa on the Bondey-Haa Highway. Built in the 1990s, the asphalt road is narrow and steep, with hundreds of turns and sheer drops.
I travelled Paro to Haa via Chalela Pass. It was most beautiful journey for me in Bhutan. The view from Chalela Pass was ammazing and highest mountain of Bhutan was visible from this pass. There was no shared cab for Chalela and Haa from Paro. I reserved full cab for this trip which cost me Rs.2000

Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom on the Himalayas’ eastern edge, is known for its monasteries, fortresses (or dzongs) and dramatic landscapes that range from subtropical plains to steep mountains and valleys. In the High Himalayas, peaks such as 7,326m Jomolhari are popular trekking destinations. Paro Taktsang monastery (also known as Tiger’s Nest) clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley.

Bhutan - Chele La Pass | Paro & Haa Valley(All Footage for Family).
Perched at an altitude of 13,000 feet, Chele La Pass is one of the highest motorable roads passes in Bhutan. It is known for the splendid Himalayan views of Mt. Jomolhari which is considered to be a sacred peak in the country.
This pass is 36 km from Paro on way to Haa valley it has scenic beauty u see the ice-clad Himalayas and Bhutanese famous religious mountain.
The highest viewpoint in Bhutan. Well connected to Paro with a single lane road. A few temporary shops are selling hot beverages & light snacks. Very cold with a stunning view.
This is one of the secret highlights of the trip to Bhutan. the road to Chelela is so beautiful with amazing views all around so is the road which is so well maintained. the views and weather on top are so soothing that all the exhaustion just vanishes as soon one reaches on top. feels like sitting there for hours with lush green mountains around. a must-visit place on the trip to Bhutan.
A beautiful place filled with flags and views. A cold airy place which is around 30 km from Paro city. A must-visit for its scenic beauty, cold weather, and some amazing pictures.
At a height of 12000 feet, you can have a good view of the pass. The view of the valley on the eastern side is amazing. Can climb to the top and the flags and your prayers will be heard.
The Chele La peak offers stunning views of the Haa Valley, on a clear day, one can see Mt. Jomolhari and other snow-capped mountains. Prayer flags have been hoised all around the peak and add to its beauty. The place is very windy so better carry a windcheater.
This is the highest pass in Bhutan and has a lot of prayer masts with flags everywhere, they were raising more while I was there but they do not take away from the view at all. The view of Chomolhari and the snowclad mountains surrounding the valleys were magic but the cloud covered them after about 30 minutes. The walk across the saddle to the nunnery was also a good get away from the crowds at the pass allowing enjoyment of the Rhododendrons and forests.
Usually, Chele la Pass is not included in the tour itineraries. That is bearable because the journey and the viewpoint will remain etched in our memories for a lifetime. Chele La Pass is the highest motorable point of Bhutan. If the weather is clear then you can get a glimpse of the greater Himalayan Ranges from here, or else the grazing yaks, the moving clouds and excellent views from the top will keep you mesmerized. It takes 2 hrs 30 mins to reach the top from Paro.
In Bhutan, the Chele La Pass is the highest mountain pass with 3,988 meters height. Seeing the mighty peak and enjoying the view from above will surely impress you while you travel around the city from Paro. Trekking and driving around here is the most popular activity because of the lush forests and Haa Valley.

The pass is located 35 km from Paro and 26 km from Haa on the Bondey-Haa Highway. Built-in the 1990s, the asphalt road is narrow and steep, with hundreds of turns and sheer drops. It can be dangerous in winter due to snow and ice and the risk of avalanche.
Bhutan is a mountainous country linked with a series of passes. Located at 3810m (13,000ft), between the valley of Paro and Haa is Chele La, the highest road pass in the country.
Popular for short excursion (2 and half hours), many tourists are seen visiting the vantage point. Some prefer driving, some hiking and many wheels down either to Haa or Paro valley in their mountain bikes. The drive to Chele La is through dense spruce and larch forests. Depending on the season you will encounter various sights such as a frozen river, waterfall, rhododendron forest, and yaks grazing peacefully. On a clear day, you can view Mt. Jumolhari(Bhutan's most sacred peak at over 22,000 ft) along with Jichu Drake and adjoining peaks to the North West, as well as the view of both the valley (Paro and Haa).
Few things to watch out for driving along the way are:
Roadside drub chuu (spring) with rock paintings of Guru Rinpoche and his two consorts.
DzongdrakhaGoemba, just two km away it is famous for its large white Nepali style Chorten perched stunningly on a cliff ledge. The site is where Guru Rinpoche suppressed local demons and is definitely worth a detour
If you like getting off the beaten track and want to stretch your legs, hike to Kila Nunnery, established as a mediation site in the 9th century; it is the oldest nunnery in the country
Bhutan Diaries - Chele La Pass
Glimpse of our excursion to Chele La Pass, the Highest motorable Mountain pass in Bhutan. This is a half day's trip from Paro city. Tourists visiting the Haa Valley have to cross this pass. The pass itself has nothing much to see, but on a clear day it offers a panoramic view of the snowpeak mountains in the north and Lush green Haa Valley in the South.

May to September is known to be the best time to visit Chele La Pass since the weather is pleasant and perfect for a one day picnic. Although, these are also the months of monsoon and therefore, before planning a trek here, you should definitely check with the locals about the weather beforehand. July in particular is good time to visit here because of the Haa Summer Festival that takes place. It involves the display of traditional Bhutanese performances, food stalls, sports and other cultural celebrations where the locals, known as the nomadic Haaps, and some tourists come together. It takes place every year, spread over two days in the month of July.
Whether you're looking for an adventurous hike or just a picnic day out with family, Chele La Pass should definitely be on your bucket list. After all, who doesn't like spending their days just admiring the Himalayas in all its glory?

Paro to Chelela and Haa Bhutan - a different experience at December end
The road from Paro to Chelela is fantastic. But at the top of Chelela, the place is very cold and windy. On the way to Chelela to Haa , the view of the calm and quiet Haa is beautiful. Thanks to Mr. Subhajit Neogi of Nightingale Tours and Travel for arranging such a beautiful Bhutan trip.
