Cambridge S Major at Cheltenham (St Mary), Glos

An excerpt from a peal on the back eight of this Gloucestershire twelve, a mixture of Mears and Rudhall bells. A characterful, pre-Simpson ring, they are due to be replaced with a new 12 in January 2017; while work certainly needs doing on the bells, which are becoming increasingly difficult to ring, I will be sorry to see them smashed up in favour of a completely new ring. This was the first peal on the back 8 since the 7th November 1970, and only the second peal of Surprise Major on the bells, the other being Bristol S Major on 29th August 1959.

The back eight were originally recast by John Rudhall from an earlier octave, cast by Abel Rudhall in 1697. They were augmented to ten by John Rudhall in 1833, although by this time the foundry had been taken over by Thomas Mears. Rehung by Mears and Stainbank of Whitechapel in 1883, when the present 4th and 6th were recast, they were augmented to 12 by the same foundry in 1911 when the 8th was also recast.

Grandsire Cinques at St Mary, Cheltenham, Glos

The opening course from a peal of Grandsire Cinques at the Minster Church of St Mary, Cheltenham, the oldest building in Cheltenham. The bells are a mixed bag of Rudhall and Mears which produce an old-fashioned, pre-Simpson ring. The locals are currently fundraising to replace these bells with a new 12 plus sharp second; personally I think this a shame as I quite like the bells, and, while they are becoming hard work and feel unloved upstairs, they are relatively easy to produce some good ringing off, as the mixed 12 bell band with varying experience here did. The bells have had some early long lengths performed on them; 13,054 Stedman Caters in 8hr16 on 21 May 1888, and 15,224 Grandsire Caters in 9hr43 on 22 April 1889
