Downtown Cheltenham
It's silly season again - Cheltenham Raceweek culminating in the Gold Cup.
In 1964, Petula Clarke took Downtown to No 2 in the UK chart. Tony Hatchs iconic song is now due to be released by the racing world 46 years later. Tony has written the first ever parody of the song, entitled Cheltenham and given his seal of approval for its release on Monday 8th March, when racing fans nationwide will be able to help make the song Number One in the UK and Irish charts, ahead of the Festival. The single is for the sole benefit of The Riding for the Disabled Association, The Bob Champion Cancer Trust, Racing Welfare and the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Ireland.
Richard Gurney, who is the creator of the initiative and who went to Tony Hatch with his lyrics, said: Tony has given racing an opportunity to reach a wider audience in the run up to the Cheltenham Festival, the single will raise funds for very good causes and perhaps best of all it will be fun and give everyone something to sing about.
Gurney concluded: It is quite simple really, a lot of hard work has gone in to producing this song from a lot of people and in my opinion the Cheltenham crowd are the most knowledgeable and supportive crowd anywhere in sport, if they and the racing world support us, we will be Number One.

Monsieur Albert Roux OBE has had a long love affair with racehorses and racing since his time with Major Peter Cazalet, the trainer of the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth's race horses. Here he talks about why he chose Cheltenham Racecourse to launch Fairlawne - the restaurant he will run with his son Michel Roux Jnr - for the duration of the Cheltenham Festival only, 11th - 14th March 2014. For Albert Roux, Cheltenham would not be Cheltenham without the Irish - hear why he believes he shares a joie de vivre with the Irish contingent who make the Cheltenham Festival so special.

Cheltenham is a town in Gloucestershire, England, home to the renowned Cheltenham Festival, 4 days of horse jump racing culminating in the Gold Cup, held annually in March at Cheltenham Racecourse. It's also known for Regency buildings, including the Pittville Pump Room, a remnant of Cheltenham’s past as a spa town. There's fine art at The Wilson museum, and the Victorian Everyman Theatre has an ornate auditorium.
Cheltenham also known as Cheltenham Spa, is a regency spa town and borough which is located on the edge of the Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Gloucestershire, England. With a motto of Salubritas et Eruditio meaning 'health and education', Cheltenham has been a health and holiday spa town resort since the discovery of mineral springs in 1716 and has a high number of internationally renowned and historic schools.
The town hosts several festivals of culture, often featuring nationally and internationally famous contributors and attendees. The list of festivals includes: the Cheltenham Literature Festival, the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, the Cheltenham Science Festival, the Cheltenham Music Festival and the Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival. As the home of the flagship race of British steeplechase horse racing, the Gold Cup is the main event of the Cheltenham Festival, held every March.
Cheltenham Spa railway station is located on the Bristol-Birmingham main line. The Cheltenham Spa Express, once known as the Cheltenham Flyer. Cheltenham is adjacent to the M5 motorway (between Bristol and Birmingham) and its junction with the A417 to Swindon. Cheltenham was a terminus of the Gloucester and Cheltenham Tramroad.
