Former Residence of Chen Cihong 中国广东澄海陈慈黉故居
This splendid mansion is located at Chenghai District (澄海区), a short distance from the cities of Shantou (汕头) and Chaozhou (潮州) of China's Guangdong Province (广东省). It is presently a museum, displaying a curious but harmonious mix of east-west architectural influences, with eclectic decorative elements. Many of the decorative ceramic tiles are similar in aesthetic styles as those found in the old town of Malacca. A Peranakan link, perhaps?
This mansion was originally owned by Thai-based Chinese rice mechant Mr Chen Cihong (陈慈黉). Constuction work began in 1922, and spanned many years, but eventually halted during the invasion of the Japanese in 1939.
Despite the passing years, the structural state of this cluster of buildings remains in very good shape, and the aesthetic elements are generally well preserved. Definitely worth a visit!

陈慈黉（音hong）故居位于澄海市隆都镇前美村，始建于清朝宣统二年（1876年），历时近半个世纪，集陈家几代人的心血。计有郎中第、寿康里、善居室、三庐等宅第。占地2.54万平方米，建筑面积1．68万平方米，共有厅房506间。其中最具代表性的善居室始建于1922年，至1939年日本攻陷汕头时尚未完工，占地6861平方米，计有大小厅房202间，是所有宅第中规模最大，设计最精，保存最为完整的一座。
该宅是旅泰著名华侨实业家、金融家陈慈黉及其家族在家乡兴建的大规模民居建筑群体，以潮汕民居的四进驷马拖车为主体，是典型的近现代民居建筑，堪称岭南第一侨宅。
陈家早年经营海外运输，后在泰国办实业，富甲一方。一贯热心公益事业，办学校、修道路，闻名国内外。其家族自1910年起，陆续用了几十年的时间，在本乡建筑了郎中第、善居室、寿康里和三庐等四大宅第，共有厅堂506间，占地面积2.54万平方米，规模宏大。

About 25 km from Shantou City, Chen Cihong's Former Residence is situated in Qianmei Village (前美村) in Chenghai District (澄海市). The residence covers an area of approximately 25,400 square meters (6 acres). It is one of the most well known tourist attractions in Shantou City.
Chen Cihong (1843-1921) was a prominent overseas Chinese businessman and navigator. As a local saying goes, there is no other man richer than Chen Cihong in Chaozhou and Shantou. He was highly respected as he had contributed generously towards improving public welfare by building schools, bridges and roads in his hometown.
Consisting of 506 halls and rooms, the residence comprises four parts, Lang Zhong Di(郎中第), Shou Kang Li(寿康里), Shan Ju Shi(善居室) and San Lu(三庐). Shan Ju Shi is the largest and most representative of the four sectors. It holds a total number of 202 halls and rooms, and it is the best preserved. This house combines the Eastern and Western architectural styles. It features traditional Chinese corridors and arch structures together with Western-styled balconies and large windows. It is said that this house was constructed under the supervision of the wife of Chen Litong, the fourth son of Cheng Cihong. The main room is done in Western style. The wing rooms are constructed in the style of ancient imperial palaces.

Wenli Village of Anbu Town (Teochew pronunciation: Ang Pou) is approximately 10 km north of Shantou City. A casual stroll on a very ordinary morning (16 Mar 2009) yielded this set of pictures, depicting a very colorful, lively and vibrant street scene.

金石镇位于潮州市西南部，地处韩江三角洲平原，距潮州市区19公里,是明代状元林大钦的故乡.
状元府位于金石镇仙都三村西畔，抗日战争时期，被日本侵略者烧毁。现遗址主要存有石门、石埕、石鼓、石狮和府墙.
林大钦(1512～1545)明代状元。字敬夫，号东莆。潮州潮安县金石镇人。幼家贫失怙，聪颖嗜学。嘉靖壬辰(1532)中状元。授翰林院修撰。以母老乞归，结讲堂于桑浦华岩山，与乡子弟讲贯六经，究性命之旨。嘉靖十九年(1540)母逝，因哀伤过度，大病一场。嘉靖二十四年(1545)葬母于桑浦山之麓，在归途中病卒，终年34岁。
Lin Daqin (1512-1545), a native of Jinshi Town, Chao'an County, was conferred the title of Zhuang Yuan (状元/top imperial scholar) in 1532, during the Ming Dynasty. He served briefly at the imperial court and successfully appealed to be released from official duties to return to his birthplace to attend to his elderly mother.
After his return, he started an academic institution to raise the literacy level of the county folks. With the passing away of his mother in 1540, the overly grievous Lin contracted a serious illness, and tragically met his demise on the way home after burying his mother at the foothill of San Pu Hill (桑浦山). He was only 34 years old then.
What remains of Lin Daqin's former mansion is just an open yard with a stone door frame, stone lions, stone drum, the mansions walls and some other remnants. This site is definitely not one for particular scenic or aesthetic interest.
Paying the site a visit is the least that one can do to honour the memory of the remarkable gentleman who once was the legendary child prodigy who outwitted many learned academicians, and also being one of the 3 zhuang yuans in history to originate from the Chaoshan region.
