Cheng Hoon Teng Temple in Melaka, Malaysia
The Cheng Hoon Teng is situated close to Jalan Tukang Emas, also known as Harmony Street because of its proximity to the Kampung Kling Mosque and Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple. The richly decorated Cheng Hoon Teng temple covers an area of 4,600 m2. Featuring a magnificent main gate along Jalan Tokong, the Cheng Hoon Teng temple consists of a complex of several prayer halls, with a large main prayer hall dedicated to the goddess of mercy, Kuan Yin. Additional smaller prayer quarters were added later. One of these is dedicated to the Buddhist gods of wealth, longevity and propagation, while another houses ancestral tablets. One of the most dramatic features of Cheng Hoon Teng temple is the seven-metre red flag-pole facing the left wing of the main prayer hall, which houses the remains of two of the three Kapitans who contributed to the construction of the temple. Across the road is a traditional opera theatre, which forms a part of the Cheng Hoon Teng temple complex. The building conforms to the principles of feng shui. The complex is laid out to ensure a view of the river and high ground on either side. Cheng Hoon Teng is the oldest and grandest temple in Malacca. It is located along Jalan Tokong (formerly Temple Street) in the core zone of the Malacca Unesco World Heritage Site.
The name Cheng Hoon Teng means Temple of Clear Clouds in Hokkien. It was founded in the early 17th century - around 1645 - by the leader of the Chinese community at that time, Kapitan China Tay Kie Ki alias Tay Hong Yong. Through its long history, Cheng Hoon Teng served not only as a religious institution, but also as the official administrative centre and court of justice of the Kapitans, including Li Wei King, Chan Lak Kua and Chua Su Cheong.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Malacca, Malaysia
The main prayer hall of Cheng Hoon Teng Temple has a weighty saddled roof, domineering dark timber beams and beautiful carved woodwork. Smaller chambers devoted to ancestor worship are prominent throughout the temple: these rooms are filled with tablets bearing photographs of the deceased. Check out the wads of fake money and papier-mâché models of luxury items which are used as symbols of creature comforts for the dead. All building materials for the temple, and even the artisans concerned with its construction, were brought in from China
Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Melaka
13th February 2013
When we arrived in Melaka, the local bus dropped us off at Cheng Ho temple, fortunately, as it enabled us not only to shelter from the rain but also to see one of Melaka's man tourist attractions.
Zheng He (1371--1433), formerly romanized as Cheng Ho, was a Muslim Hui-Chinese court eunuch, mariner, explorer, diplomat and fleet admiral, who commanded voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Somalia and the Swahili coast, collectively referred to as the Voyages of Zheng He from 1405 to 1433. As a favorite of the Yongle Emperor, whose usurpation he assisted, he rose to the top of the imperial hierarchy and served as commander of the southern capital Nanjing.
Among the Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia, Zheng He became the object of cult veneration. The temples of this cult -- called after either of his names, Cheng Hoon or Sam Po -- are popular with overseas Chinese.
The oldest and most important Chinese temple in Malacca is the 17th-century Cheng Hoon Teng, dedicated to Guanyin. During Dutch colonial rule, the head of the Cheng Hoon Temple was appointed chief over the community's Chinese inhabitants.
