Discovering Incredible OFF THE BEATEN PATH China
Zhaoxing is the largest Dong village in China. It sits in Guizhou province, close to the border of Guangxi. This is rice country. The incredibly beautiful rice terraces decorate the outer edges of the village. It's a tourist attraction, but it still feels very off the beaten path. Just a couple train stops east and you'll be in Guilin - one of the most popular places for tourism in China. I didn't know much about Zhaoxing when I decided to go there, but I knew I wanted to avoid the heavily visited area of Guilin. Zhaoxing fit exactly what I was looking for.
The Dong people make up a very small percentage of China. There are about 3 million of them. Their culture is very unique and I really enjoyed witnessing aspects of it. The highlights include seeing them farm the rice fields, listening to them sing, and trying their food.
Like I said earlier, this is rice country and the rice I ate in Zhaoxing was some of the best rice I've ever had. Their sticky rice cooked in bamboo and their special you cha (oil tea) with puffed rice were delicious.
After traveling China for close to 2 weeks, this was my most peaceful stop. Zhaoxing is a great place to unwind and discovery a bit of China that most people in the world will never know about.

STORYLINE:
Chinese authorities have delayed for two days a bid to divert water from a huge lake which formed after an earthquake last month, as people in the surrounding area were on standby to evacuate if the lake bursts.
Tangjiashan lake was formed above Beichuan town in the Mianyang region of Sichuan province when a hillside plunged into a river valley during the May 12 quake.
The water level in the lake has been rising steadily and threatened to flood surrounding areas, prompting authorities to evacuate nearly 200-thousand people already uprooted by the quake.
But the official news agency Xinhua said with little rain forecast for the next few days, rescue workers were not likely to start draining off the water until Thursday.
The work had been expected to start on Tuesday.
Workers have already used heavy earth-moving equipment to dig a run-off channel to remove the water as the government worried that the newly formed lake could burst, sending a wall of water through a valley.
Authorities have warned more than one (m) million others to be ready to leave quickly if the lake floods.
In Mianyang city people already living in tents after their houses were damaged in the quake were preparing to evacuate again if the lake bursts.
Chen Yong told AP Television that the government would ring the city's air raid alarm if people needed to evacuate the area.
When the alarm rings we will just escape from here with some necessary food and water and other things we can carry. The rest of the belongings can only be left here, Chen said from a bridge by the Fujiang River where he and other evacuees have set up a temporary camp.
Zhou Yan said it was hard to know when or if the flood waters would come so they were prepared to leave at any time.
We were told that if there is a big rain fall then the flood might come on June 5, but if there is no rain then it is hard to say. No matter what, we have got ready for the lake to burst and for the flood to come, said Zhou.
Resettlement bases were being built in the hills near to the city for people affected by the quake.
The confirmed death toll for China's worst disaster in three decades has reached 69,019, with more than 18-thousand people still missing, the government said on Monday.
The quake also left five (m) million people homeless.

CCTV footage: M7.9 Earthquake Sichuan earthquake 2008
The 2008 Sichuan earthquake (Chinese: 汶川大地震; pinyin: Wènchuān dà dìzhèn; literally: 'Great Wenchuan earthquake'), also known as the Great Sichuan earthquake or Wenchuan earthquake, occurred at 14:28:01 China Standard Time on May 12, 2008. Measuring at 8.0 Ms (7.9 Mw), the earthquake's epicenter was located 80 kilometres (50 mi) west-northwest of Chengdu, the provincial capital, with a focal depth of 19 km (12 mi). The earthquake ruptured the fault for over 240 km (150 mi), with surface displacements of several meters. The earthquake was also felt in nearby countries and as far away as both Beijing and Shanghai—1,500 and 1,700 km (930 and 1,060 mi) away—where office buildings swayed with the tremor. Strong aftershocks, some exceeding 6 Ms, continued to hit the area up to several months after the main shock, causing further casualties and damage. The earthquake also caused the largest number of geohazards ever recorded, including about 200,000 landslides and more than 800 quake lakes distributed over an area of 110,000 km2 (42,000 sq mi).
