TOP 10 of CHINA: MUST SEE SIGHTs & HIDDEN GEMs for your FIRST VISIT
These are my TOP 10 MUST SEE SIGHTS and HIDDEN GEMS that we saw during our 5 weeks in China. From busy cities to cute hipster towns. Natural wonders to man made gems. China really has everything need to make it your next favourite travel destination: this is your China travel inspiration!
In this video, we look at the best places to visit and some of the most useful China travel advice for your first visit: including train travel, how to access the internet through a VPN and how to deal with culture shock.
EVERY PLACE FEATURED AND INFORMATION MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO (in alphabetical order).
FULL CHINA SERIES PLAYLIST:
BEST VPN FOR CHINA: To access any western social media platforms in China, you're going to need a VPN. Ivacy offers a great VPN for a very affordable price (ad):
APPS TO DOWNLOAD
I should really have mentioned this in the video. Before your trip, make sure you download WeChat (it's free) for scanning things in shops and restaurants for translation. Didi is also a good one, it's the Chinese Uber!
BEIJING
The capital of China is a big, busy city but it's little hutongs are a lot of fun to explore. The Summer Palace and the Forbidden City are both really worth seeing as well.
CHAKA SALT LAKE -
A lesser visited gem, located about 4 hours away from the city of Xining in Qinghai province. Famous for it's mirror-like reflections of the sky.
CULTURE SHOCK
I received a lot of comments saying that people had some reservations and fears about visiting China. To be honest, I felt the same way before I went.
DALI -
An ancient city in Yunnan province that has a little bit of everything that I love! There's nature on the shores of Erhai Lake and up in the heights of Canshan Mountain. The stunning Three Pagodas temple and the bustling culture of the ancient city.
GREAT WALL OF CHINA -
Requires no introduction. But I really recommend exploring the wilder and more remote areas of the wall, rather than the touristy sections. In this film I looked at 3 different areas and compared the strengths and weaknesses of each.
HONG KONG -
A giant, sprawling city. Which also has some amazing natural spots like Lantau Island and Kowloon Park, That's what I focussed on in my travel film.
KUNMING -
Kunming has a reputation for being a transport hub, but it's actually a really fun city to spend a few days. The Dragon Gate and Green Lake Park are particularly great and are the main focus of my travel guide linked above.
LIJIANG OLD TOWN -
A beautiful ancient town with stunning maze like streets. It rained most of the time we were there, so I went searching for the little hidden gems of the streets.
RAINBOW MOUNTAINS -
This was the best day that I had in China. Away from the Danxia Landform Geopark is a peaceful national park that is so worth exploring. It feels more like Australia or the US than China.
SHANGHAI -
The last stop that we had in China. You can get some amazing views from the World Financial Centre Viewpoint.
TRAIN TRAVEL IN CHINA
The main way we got around China. We booked everything through China Highlights, which made thinks very easy (not sponsored, just good):
VPN (virtual private network)
You need a VPN to access almost every western social media accounts in China. For an affordable, but good VPN use Ivacy (ad):
XIAN -
I spent 24 hours exploring Xian and it definitely wasn't enough time. The Terracotta Warriors are amazing, but my film focusses on the other gems of the city.
XINGPING -
Home to the best view in China: Laozhai Mountain.
YANGSHUO -
Beautiful karst mountains, rivers and hiking. My video guide features everything we did there and it's a pretty extensive list! Including instructions on how to get to the best viewpoint in the area.

CHINA | cinematic travel video ???????? 中国 - 景区旅游视频 great wall pandas opera li yulong river hong kong
China - a cinematic travel video
中国 - 景区旅游视频
In our recent exploration of the country of China, I wanted to capture not only the places, but the people as well. From day one China exceeded our expectations. The country, with its natural and historic beauty, overwhelmed us. But its people forever captured our hearts. ❤????????
在我们对中国的探索中,我不仅要捕捉地方,还要捕捉人民。从第一天起,中国超出了我们的预期这个拥有自然和历史美景的国家让我们不知所措。但它的人民永远抓住了我们的心。
Our first stop was Beijing, with lodging at Beijing Double Happiness Courtyard Hotel. Our favorite places there included the Lama Temple, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, the Great Wall at Mutianyu, and Beihai Park. We utilized the public transit system to get around and it was no problem at all. The subway system and buses were very clean and extremely safe. And we called upon China Highlights, a private tour company, to get us to and from the Great Wall.
Next was Chengdu and Emeishan. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Pandas was gorgeous! We arrived first thing in the morning, with the weather nice and cool, almost no crowds, and the pandas were awake and feeding! We also enojoyed the wide and narrow alley pedestrian malls, Old Chengdu, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, the Leshan Giant Buddha, and of course Emei Mountain with it's multitude of monestaries and temples.
Guilin and Yangshou were next. From Guilin, we visited the breathtaking landscape of the Longji Rice Terraces and had lunch in the village up above. In September the rice was about ready to harvest, so the fields were full of color. The next day we went on a spectacular cruise down the Li River. Wow, those mountains! Our lodging was our favorite of the entire trip at Gui Lin Yi Royal Palacein the heart of Guilin Park.
Yangshuo was our favorite city, surrounded by majestic karst mountains. We watched the Impression of Sanjie Liu show at night, went bamboo rafting down the Yulong River, and rode bikes through the countryside. Incredible landscapes in every direction.
We arrived in Hong Kong just in time for the Mid-Autumn, or Moon, Festival. Once again we utilized the public transit system, which was safe, clean, and fast. We sailed on a traditional Chinese junkaround the harbor and were able to witness the Light Show at night. We also enjoyed Tian Tan Buddha, Nan Lian Garden, and witnessed the Tai Hang Fire Dragon dance as well. Simply spectacular!
One could visit China for the history alone. But the incredible gardens, architecture, and landscapes cannot be missed. China's greatest asset, however, is it's people. We found a new love and respect for the Chinese. Such a great country. Such a great people. You must go see for yourself.

BEST VPN FOR CHINA: To access any western social media platforms in China, you're going to need a VPN on your phone and laptop. Ivacy offers a great service for a very affordable price (ad):
Here's a detailed breakdown of information as mentioned in the film (a table of contents, if you will):
0:30 - Views from the Train Ride from Hong Kong to Yangshuo
1:14 - Arriving in Yangshuo: What is the town like?
A bit of background on the town and how it might not be the nature serenity you are looking for.
1:35 - How to get to the Yangshuo TV Tower Viewpoint (hard climb)
The best views in Yangshuo are accessible from the town centre, but it's a pretty long climb up to the top of a mountain. We followed the instructions on how to get there by ILP Blog, a really good article. Remember to bring 10 Yuan per person:
3:23 - This is what the TV Tower view looks like
4:03 - The Views from Yangshuo Park (easy climb)
A much less physically demanding climb to some nice views over the town. It's a really nice public park too, definitely worth checking out.
4:28 - Our Accommodation, Sudder Street Guesthouse
Great place to stay, just outside the town centre. An amazing pool, with great views. Dorms are £3 a night and private rooms (en-suite) with a balcony are £18.
4:55 - Yangshuo National Park
This is where you'll spend most of your time and where you will find the famous bamboo rafts that you've seen on Instagram. We rented bicycles to get around, but some people rent mopeds/motorbikes instead. You're going to want the freedom of your own transport.
6:00 - Here's the bamboo rafts
6:26 - Moon Hill, my favourite sunset spot (and favourite part of Yangshuo in general). A natural archway that has featured in one of the Transformers films I think.
And thats it. Any questions, let me know in the comments!

Xi'an Ancient Wall/Lacquer Factory-Xi'an, China (Private Tour + Historical Facts)
The Xi'an City Wall is the most well-preserved and intact part of the Chinese ancient city walls. It is also one of the largest and most intact ancient city wall structures in the world. Originally built in the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644), it's purpose was military fortification. The wall is 40 feet tall and runs for 8.5 miles.
Lacquer is a natural substance obtained from the lacquer tree. Raw lacquer, the sap of the tree, hardens after contact with the air. Lacquer trees take 3-5 years to mature to the point where they can be tapped for their sap. The tree is indigenous to China, and that is why China leads the world in lacquer resources.

Teach English in China: Pros and Cons | Training Schools vs. Universities
My Patreon:
So, you're looking to teach in China? Here are some pros and cons if you're going to be teaching at a university or training school. For me personally, universities are the way to go! Here they are:
Working at a training school, you will have:
- Longer working hours. Many, if not most, training schools will sign you for something around 22-25 teaching hours a week, not including “non-teaching hours.” This includes: English First, i2 International Education, Wall Street English, Disney English, New Oriental, Meten English. You can sign part-time contracts with most of these companies, but generally speaking, if you want a living wage, a full-time job, and a Z visa (work visa), you’re gonna put in the hours.
- Higher pay. You’re working longer hours, so you will get paid more. Salaries range from 140/hr to 200+/hr. If you’re teaching 25 hours a week, you can work that out. Some training schools give housing stipends/other compensation, so you’ll be making 10-15k yuan/month.
- No experience / credentials needed, depending on where and which company you teach at.
- No housing included. You’re on your own for a place.
- Lots of young students and annoying parents with abnormally high expectations.
- Fairly rigid curriculums to follow and little freedom to teach what you like.
- Not a normal social life. You’ll be working weekends.
Working at a university, you will have:
- Shorter working hours. Most university contracts are for between 12-18 teaching hours a week, with 16 being the most common. However, each “hour” is usually 45 or 50 minutes, followed by a break, then another “hour,” so you’re not teaching the whole time.
- Lower pay. Working less = less money, of course.
- Experience / credentials needed. This also depends on where you’re going to be. If you want to be at a university and you don’t have any experience, you’ll have to start small. You’ll at least need your original degree, and sometimes they’ll want to see your transcripts as well! They’re cutting down on fake degrees.
- More free time!!
- Housing included (most of the time) or a housing stipend.
- Complete freedom to teach what you like, sometimes to a fault.
- Older students, often (not always) with better English, so you don’t need to teach from the ground up.
Jobs in China:
Good luck!
What is working / teaching at a training school in China like? What is working / teaching at a university in China like?
Feel free to subscribe to see more videos about what it is like to be an American (or any kind of foreigner) in China! All are welcome!
