I head to the south of Tunisia to visit the desert town of Tataouine, which famously was the inspiration behind the name for the planet Tatooine in George Lucas' Star Wars. I then travel to an idyllic nearby village named Chenini, which proves to be the most memorable stop on my Tunisia tour.

Berber village of Chenini, Spa&Thalassotherapy in Djerba True Tunisia...season 2 (day 11/12)
In this episode: climb to the ancient troglodyte berber village of Chenini (11th century), a fortified ksar (granary) near Tataouine (in Star Wars, many scenes were filmed in the area and one of the moons of Tatooine is named Chenini).
Then discover Masjid of the Seven Sleepers: according to legend, they did not stop growing during their 308-years sleep and became giants; their graves measure 5 meters long.
In Djerba, it's now time to relax! Since 2004, Tunisia is the second destination in the world for spa and thalassotherapy, with high professional skills.
At Houmt El Souk, main town of the island of Djerba, YouTubers are shopping at local fish market to have a delicious meal by the sea.

Chenini, Tataouine | شنني, تطاوين
Chenini est un village troglodytique berbérophone du sud de la Tunisie situé à 18 kilomètres de Tataouine. Saint Augustin estime que Kenini, dont le nom tirerait son origine de Kanaan, est l'origine du mot Chenini. Cependant, dans le parler berbère de Tataouine, le verbe « Chenna » signifie « Mélanger ».

Ce paysage de fortifications et de villages troglodytes raconte encore aujourd’hui la capacité d’adaptation de ces habitants face au climat et aux envahisseurs successifs.

le village est surplombé par un ksar citadelle, ou kalâa, juché sur une butte à environ 500 mètres d'altitude. Il s'agit d'un lieu de stockage des réserves alimentaires et des biens de valeur qui servait également de refuge en cas d'attaque. Comme les ksour de Douiret ou Guermessa, il a « permis aux Berbères de se maintenir, tout en établissant des relations de clientèle et de protection avec les tribus arabes Lorsque le risque d'invasion ou de pillage est devenu moins important et avec la sédentarisation des berbères, le village a commencé à se développer sur les flancs de la butte et vers le bas » jusqu'à la création du nouveau village de Chenini vers 1960 . فإنه يتم التغاضي عنه من قبل قصر القلعة ، أو كالا، جاثم على تلة حوالي 500 متر. هذا هو مكان لتخزين احتياطي الغذاء والأصول القيمة التي كانت أيضا بمثابة ملجأ في حالة حدوث هجوم. بسبب القصور أو Douiret Guermessa، وقال انه سمح للحفاظ على البربر، في حين أن إقامة علاقات مع العملاء وحماية عند القبائل العربية من خطر الغزو أو النهب أصبح أقل أهمية مع لتسوية البربرية ، وبدأت القرية لتنمو على سفوح التلال وهبوطا حتى إنشاء قرية جديدة من Chenini 1960.

The ruined Berber town of #Chenini, merging into hilltop ridges, is another great place to see this quirky architecture and explore the vaults, some of which date back to the 12th century. To see both ruined granaries and troglodyte houses, head to Douiret in the same region, where the now-tumbling structures are built into the mountainside overlooking a rugged and rocky desert landscape.
