This Hindu temple is located on the banks of River Kaveri at Somanathapura, Karnataka, India. The temple was consecrated in 1258 CE by Somanatha Dandanayaka, a general of the Hoysala King Narasimha III. It is located 38 kilometers from Mysuru city.
The temple is a model illustration of the Hoysala architecture.The main temple in the center is on a high star-shaped platform. The western sanctum was for a statue of Kesava, the northern sanctum of Janardhana and the southern sanctum of Venugopala, all forms of Vishnu.The outer walls, the inner walls, the pillars and the ceiling of the temple are intricately carved. The ancient stone carved temple of typical Hoysala design , the start shaped base of the temple is well preserved .
The Kesava temple is one of some 1,500 Hindu and Jain temples built by the Hoysala Empire kings in different parts of their kingdom. The other well studied Hoysala temples include those at Belur and Halebidu.
Keshava, Janardhana and Venugopala are names found in the Bhagavad Gita, all in the context of Krishna. The term Chennakeśava means handsome Keshava. The Keshava temple at the Somanathapura is a temple of the Vaishnavism tradition within Hinduism, and one of many Keshava temples built in or before the 13th century in different parts of India, as well as in Belur in 1117 CE about 170 kilometres.
The inscription is in old Kannada.

The nearest towns which catches tourists interest are Malavalli, Talakadu, Bannur, shivanasamudra, Gaganachukki falls and Bharachukki water Falls, River banks of cauvery . Those visiting Chennakesava Temple, Somanathapura on state highway 79 (T. Narasipura -Srirangapatna Road) make it a point to explore the Panchalingeshwara temple which lies a stone throw away just opposite the road in between the green fields. II went there with my friends a month back. t is a beautiful architectural marvel and a well maintained destination. It is very close to mysuru city and easily reachable from Bangalore. It is an excellent example of Hoysala architecture.

The Venugopala Swamy Temple located at Hosa Kannambadi, Near Krishna Raja Sagara, is another example of Hoysala architecture in Karnataka. This temple was built in the 12th century AD around the same time as the Chennakesava Temple at Somanathapura, Mysore district.

Somanathapura is the small town named after the great general Somanatha behind the temple. Somanathapura is located east to Mysore city which is surrounded by lush green paddy fields and on the banks of the river Kaveri.
ChennaKesava temple, as the name says is Vaishnava temple dedicated to Kesava with all forms of Krishna depicted and sanctified in 13th century. It is built and sanctified by Somanatha, an army commander of Hoysala King Narasimha III.

Belur Chennakeshava, temples of Karnataka.The Chennakeshava Temple, also referred to as Keshava, Kesava or Vijayanarayana Temple of Belur, is a 12th-century Hindu temple in the Hassan district of Karnataka state, India. Belur temple was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE, on the banks of the Yagachi River in Belur also called Velapura, an early Hoysala Empire capital. Belur temple was built over three generations and took 103 years to finish. Belur temple artwork depicts scenes of secular life in the 12th century, dancers and musicians, as well as a pictorial narration of Hindu texts such as the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas. Belur temple is considered to be one of the earliest creations of Hoysala dynasty. At its highest, Belur temple stands 37 metres tall. Its outer walls are adorned with finely done artwork, with dancing girls in various postures.
Belur Chennakesava temple has three entrances and their doorways have decorated sculptures called dvarapalaka (doorkeepers) on either side. The navaranga hall has forty eight pillars. All except the central four are carved in a unique way. This place is one of the famous tourist destination in Karnataka - India. As per saying, the beauty of this temple is inside as there are 48 pillars carved in different designs.
The vast complex has a large rajagopura or gate arches .On the right of the temple is the Kappe Channigraya temple and a smaller temple dedicated to a Lakshmi reincarnation, the goddess Sowmyanayaki, sits slightly behind the two. On the left of Belur Chennakeshava temple, one can find the Ranganayaki temple.The Gravity Pillar-The decline of the Hoysalas saw the emergence of the rulers of Vijayanagara. The reign of King Devaraya saw his commander Bice Dandanayaka install the unique 42 feet tall lamp post, the Karthika Deepotsava Stambha. This pillar is a testament to the architectural expertise during King Devaraya’s reign, with the post simply placed over a flat platform. It appears to be standing on its own dead weight, and has astounded visitors for ages. The doorways of the temple’s mantapa features a Hoysala king slaying what historians believe is either a tiger or lion. It is also believed that this could be a symbolic representation of the defeat of the Cholas, whose royal emblem is a tiger.
The Hoysala period of South Indian history began about 1000 CE and continued through 1346 CE. In this period, they built around 1,500 temples in 958 centres. Belur is home to one of the grandest examples of Hoysala architecture. Belur is located on the banks of river Yagachi and is known as Dakshina Banaras or ‘Banaras of the South’, Belur is called Beluhur, Velur or Velapura in old inscriptions and medieval era texts. It was the early capital of the Hoysala kings. The city was so esteemed by the Hoysalas that it is referred to as earthly Vaikuntha (Vishnu's abode) and dakshina Varanasi (southern holy city of Hindus) in later inscriptions.
It is 35 km from Hassan city and about 200 km from Bengaluru, 155 kms from Mysore and 153 kms from Mangalore .
Hassan is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka. Hassan is situated 980 m above sea level. It is named after the Hasanamba temple.

How to reach
Mysore to Somnathpur distance is is about 35km.You can reach by two routes, from Mysore. The first route is via Bannur, located about 8km north of Somnathpur. The distance is about 32km from Mysore.Take SH33 towards Malavalli and Bangalore to come out of Mysore city. At Bannur leave the highway and take the right diversion to Somnathpur.The other road route from Mysore is via T.Narsipur and Sosale. T.Narsipura is about 8km south of Somnathpur. Mysore to Somnathpur via T.Narsipur is about 41km (25miles). Take the NH212 out of Mysore city. At T. Narsipur leave the highway and take diversion to Somnathpur road (Bannur road).There are no direct buses to Somnathpur from Mysore. Your best bet is to get a bus to Bannur or T.Narsipur. And then look for a local bus or other shared means (van, auto-rickshaw etc) that goes via Somnathpur.
Both private buses and KSRTC buses operate to Bannur and T.Narsipur from Mysore.
At a distance of 137 km from Bangalore, 35 km from Mysore & 50 km from Shivanasamudra Falls is Somnathpur. Bangalore Airport is the nearest airport which is about 174 km from Somnathpur. Mysore Junction is the nearest railway station, at a distance of 35 km from Somnathpur. Somnathpur has direct bus connectivity with Bannur (9 km), which can be reached by bus from Mysore (27 km) and Mandya (27 km).

Karanji Lake (Kannada: ಕಾರಂಜಿ ಕೆರೆ) is a lake located in the city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka, India. Karanji lake is surrounded by a nature park consisting of a butterfly park and a walk-through aviary, boating facility, hydrophytes park, cactus park, medicinal plant nursery, children's play area, variety of birds on display, the watch tower to view the movements of the large number of migratory birds, bridge to the island , and if one is lucky one can spot a crocodile or two.
The total area of Kaaranji lake is 90 hectares. The lake area is the favorite haunts of migratory birds . Some of the common migratory birds found here are grey pelican, painted stork, ibis, cormorant, egret, etc. which nest on trees in the islands present in the lake. Herons, Asian open bill storks, egrets, red wattle lapwing, sandpipers, rose ringed parakeet, black drongo, brown shrike, red-whiskered bulbul, booted warbler, sunbird and greenish warbler are some of the other species of birds found here.
Hornbills, peacocks, white-peacocks, turkeys and black swans are some of the birds found in this aviary.
