Korea's new president to hold first press conference at Cheong Wa Dae
문재인 대통령, 2시반 청와대에서 취임 후 첫 기자회견
President Moon Jae-in is set to hold his first press conference as president here at Cheong Wa Dae at 2:30 p.m.
Ji-sun, how is the presidential office preparing for Moon's arrival?
Daeun.
We are a bit behind schedule as President Moon Jae-in spent time shaking hands and speaking with the people on his way to Cheong Wa Dae.
He was set to have lunch at 1 p.m. with former Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn , who served as Prime Minister in the Park Geun-hye administration.
In addition to that, Moon and key staff members are scheduled to have briefings from the career presidential office staff who worked at Cheong Wa Dae during the Park administration, to better help them carry on their duties... as there is no transition period.
But Moon is likely already familiar with quite a few tasks,... as he served here as chief of staff to late President Roh Moo-hyun during his tenure.
His first press conference here at Chunchugwan - the press building attached to Cheong Wa Dae, will be broadcast live.
In his remarks,... President Moon is expected to lay out his major policy priorities and name key staff members,... including prime minister, National Security Council chief, head of the National Intelligence Service... and the new head of presidential security service.
President Moon is not expected to answer questions from the press, but his nominees will.
His next schedule is launching a job commission and discussing how to operate that new presidential committee.
Moon has been pledging to become the president of job creation, vowing to create 810-thousand new jobs in the public sector, particularly to tackle the record-high unemployment rate, with youth jobless rate standing at nearly 10-percent last year.
Later in the evening, Moon is very likely to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump on the phone... as the two allies have a lot to discuss, including North Korea's nuclear ambitions as well as strengthening bilateral ties.
Moon has pledged to work at the Government Complex at Gwanghwamun Plaza... instead of Cheong Wa Dae, which he considers isolated and blocks free communication with his Cabinet members and the people,... but that won't be happening immediately as that would take some time.
Daeun.

Cheong Wa Dae on impeachment: Watching without words
탄핵 발표 앞둔 청와대.. '별도 메시지 없어.. 차분히 지켜볼 것'
The nation's top office is under tight security,... as the decision on whether President Park gets to stay or leave Cheong Wa Dae... approaches.
She will likely make a statement tomorrow after the verdict is out.
Song Ji-sun tells us more.
There were no words from Cheong Wa Dae... ahead of the impeachment decision,... with the presidential office saying only that it will be keeping a close eye on the verdict.
The president's lawyers have claimed that the procedure the National Assembly undertook to pass the impeachment motion... was not legitimate... and that the motion should be overturned,... as it is groundless.
They were also against the Constitutional Court's decision to set a deadline for the impeachment verdict... and its attempts to make a prompt ruling,... saying the court's actions are biased and unjust and favor the opposition over the president.
A day before the impeachment ruling... the president's chief of staff chaired a meeting with all the senior secretaries... to discuss measures for all possible scenarios.
Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, the acting president, also convened a similar gathering of the Cabinet... to discuss the same subject.
Given the gravity of the situation, the police have vowed to maintain tight security throughout the weekend.
The top office is secured by a wall of police buses and officers... and the Constitutional Court is under guard on the highest alert.
It is not yet known how or when the president would leave the presidential compound... if she is removed from office.
The presidential office also dismissed the possibility that she would voluntarily resign -- regardless of the impeachment decision. After the verdict is read, the president could offer remarks in person, issue a statement or have her spokesperson comment on her behalf.

Cheong Wa Dae appoints lawyer to represent President Park
We start with the latest development in the power abuse scandal linked to the president's confidante Choi Soon-sil... that has sparked widespread calls for President Park Geun-hye to resign.
With just a matter of days remaining until the president is questioned by prosecutors, an unprecedented event for a sitting Korean president, the top office has pinpointed a lawyer to represent her.
Let's get more from our Song Ji-sun who is at the presidential office.
Ji-sun, fill us in.
Daeun.
The presidential spokesperson said President Park will be represented by Yoo Yeong-ha, a former prosecutor who served in the Changwon, Incheon and Northern Seoul Prosecutors' Offices.
He was a standing commissioner at the National Human Rights Commission for two years... before he opened his own law practice.
He also served as President Park's special legal adviser when she was a member of the ruling party's Supreme Council... and he made several attempts to run for parliament himself.
He will represent the president and make the arrangements with the prosecutors' office... for the date, time and place of the questioning session.
Although prosecutors want to begin questioning within a day or two -- before their planned indictment of Choi Soon-sil on Saturday -- the presidential office is reportedly asking for more days to prepare.
Whenever it happens, it will be a historic moment, because it will be the first time a sitting president undergoes questioning. What is next for President Park after that? And what's the atmosphere there like after the massive protest over the weekend and the continued calls for the president to step down?
After the weekend demonstration involving a million protesters and the unified statements from the opposition parties, the top office has certainly heard the calls for President Park's resignation.
But the presidential office views it as an option of last resort and is not considering it at the moment.
The top office is firm on its view that it would be unconstitutional for the president to abandon her post, and she is committed to fulfilling her responsibilities.
At today's briefing as well, the presidential spokesperson reiterated that the top office is considering all possible measures to stabilize the situation and carry on with state affairs.
Their first priority is still dialogue with parliament to select a prime minister who would handle state affairs.
But if the National Assembly moves ahead with impeachment, President Park will be left with no option but to step down.
Daeun.
Well, the constitution is being brought up many times with regard to what's next for President Park.
Let's see how things unfold.
Thank you Ji-sun.

Presidents Moon and Duterte hold summit meeting at Blue House
문대통령, 오늘 두테르테 필리핀 대통령과 정상회담
Let's begin with the first visit to Seoul by a head of state from an ASEAN member country.
Rodrigo Duterte spent this afternoon at the nation's top office, with a summit with President Moon Jae-in.
Our Cheongwadae correspondent Hwang Hojun shares with us what was discussed. May our relations remain strong and continue to thrive for the benefit of both the Korean and Filipino peoples.
After writing that message in the Cheong Wa Dae guestbook, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and his South Korean counterpart held a summit meeting together on Monday.
President Duterte is the first head of state from an ASEAN member country to visit Seoul since President Moon took office.
But this was actually the second time the current Presidents of South Korea and the Philippines have met.
The first was on the sidelines of the ASEAN+3 summit and the East Asian Summit, last November.
In Monday's meeting, the two leaders highly evaluated the 69 years of diplomatic relations between their countries.
Korea and the Philippines have made remarkable achievements in all areas, including politics, economy, culture, and human exchanges over the past 70 years based on our strong friendship established through the Korean War.
President Moon noted that South Korea is the Philippines' fifth-largest trading partner and that human exchanges between the two countries have risen steadily.
And to further promote such partnerships, the two leaders agreed to designate 2019 a visit South Korea-Philippines year,... which will mark the 70th anniversary of the two countries establishing diplomatic ties.
According to a Blue House press release, the South Korean President also expressed his gratitude for the Philippines' support for the Moon administration's efforts to peacefully resolve of the North Korea nuclear issue... as well as for the recent improvements in inter-Korean relations.
The two leaders pledged their commitment to the denuclearization and establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Also discussed during their meeting was economic cooperation between Seoul and Manila.
President Duterte said that President Moon's New Southern Policy, which seeks to expand South Korea's diplomatic relations and economic cooperation with ASEAN nations,... will help the Philippines achieve its own economic goal.
Known as the Ambisyon Natin 2040, President Duterte's own long-term policy is aimed at transforming the Philippines into a mid-to-high-income nation by the year 2040 by creating a trustworthy, poverty-free middle-class society.
Soon after their summit, Presidents Moon and Duterte signed an M-O-U pledging cooperation between their two countries in areas including transportation, trade, and renewable energy, which was then followed by a joint press conference.
And to honor the visiting Philippine President, a dinner banquet and cultural performances were hosted by the South Korean president.
President Duterte will leave for Manila on Tuesday.

Presidential office appalled by contents of former president′s memoi
The presidential office says a reference to monetary exchange as a precondition to inter-Korean talks in former president Lee Myung-bak′s latest memoirs is appalling.
A Cheong Wa Dae official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, questioned how detailing accounts of past foreign affairs, including inter-Korean dialogue, would promote national interests.
The official added the current Park Geun-hye administration believes in transparency in carrying out its foreign policies.
In his new book, the former president revealed how,... during secret inter-Korean meetings during his term in office,... North Korea had repeatedly demanded various aid from the South, in return for an apology for torpedoing a South Korean warship in 2010 and a leaders′ summit.
South Korean Constitutional Court to hear presidential impeachment case
South Korea’s Constitutional Court is planning to hear the impeachment case of President Park Geun-hye from Tuesday before making the final ruling. The judges have a total of 180 days to decide whether to uphold the impeachment or reinstate President Park.

NSC convened at Cheong Wa Dae on N.Korea's missile launch
청와대, 북 탄도미사일 발사 도발에 NSC 상임위 개최
President Park Geun-hye denounced North Korea's 'reckless provocation' warning the regime of complete isolation and an eventual self-destruction.
This... as the National Security Council quickly convened a meeting to assess the situation.
Our top office correspondent Song Ji-sun reports.
Just a couple of hours after Pyongyang's missile launches, the Presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae convened a National Security Council meeting, chaired by NSC chief Kim Kwan-jin.
The council analyzed Pyongyang's missile capabilities based on the trajectory of the ballistic missiles launched Wednesday,... and discussed countermeasures, both on defense and diplomatic fronts.
Later in the afternoon, President Park attended the National Unification Advisory Council meeting, as scheduled.
Over 500 advisors gathered from the Americas, Japan and China... to discuss the path to peaceful unification of the two Koreas.
Park expressed appreciation to those building international support for unification on the Korean peninsula.
Although she did not directly mention Wednesday morning's missile launches, Park warned North Korea to refrain from further provocations... and to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
If Pyongyang continues to push forward with its provocations, no country in the world will build ties with North Korea, and no organization will lend a helping hand to Pyongyang. The North Korean regime must realize that only complete isolation and self-destruction await at the end of reckless provocations.
Against North Korea's continued provocations... President Park once again stressed the need for national unity towards unification... and called on the people to diligently work towards the peace and prosperity of the nation.
