UNESCO Seokuram Grotto and Royal Shilla Tombs Gyeongju, South Korea
Don't bother visiting Seokuram Grotto! Because moisture is ruining the UNESCO once magnificent 8th century statues carved in rock, the entire site is now covered and can only be partially viewed through glass. I understand the why but it is now a big miss and looks nothing like photographs travelers see.

[Visit Korea] Daereungwon Ancient Tombs(경주 대릉원)
경주 대릉원
Gyeongju Daereungwon Ancient Tombs is a region of tombs of Silla dynasty, located in Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
It was designated as the 512th historical landmark of South Korea on July 28, 2011.
Across width of 40hectares, 23 of small burial mounds draw a curved line, covered with green grass.
Being neither too big, nor too small, it would rather look like sweet little back hills than tombs.
Burial mounds of Silla millennium, itself looks like a piece of art.
Not only its night view with magical lighting is beautiful, but also the morning view, mixing with the path through a wood, with walking along the open field, Daereungwon is even more refreshing.
The best part of Daereungwon Tombs is Cheonmachong Ancient Tomb, whose inside is open to the public. (The others are not.) It was a big surprise to the world when so many artifacts were found in the excavation of it.
Cheonmachong was titled so, because Cheonmado, a drawing of a white Cheonma(Pegasus) flying up to the sky, was found in it.
Cheonma is carved on birchbark, which had been made into a calf protecting pad for horse riding, the image of an imaginary horse flying through the clouds makes us feel the modern beauty.
The tombs show the complete form of the Wood coffin covered with pebbles mound, which is the unique construction type of Silla, The gold artifacts came into the world, the best work of Silla crowns discovered so far, 出(pronounced Chool in korea)-shaped gold crowns, and belt ornaments, gold rings and so on. It shows the peak beauty of Silla ancient art.

Literary Trip to Gyeongju of Sanjay from India and Professor Montgomery from USA
Sanjay is a young man from Varanasi, India, where he worked as a boat tour guide and ran a small tea house. He was quite famous among Korean tourists in Varanasi.
He speaks Korean fluently and he was also featured in the best-selling poem collection I Miss You Even When You Are by My Side by renowned Korean poet Ryu Si-hwa. Last summer Sanjay visited Korea to learn more about the Korean culture and language.
He is having his hands full studying for the advanced level of a Korean language proficiency test at Dongguk University. The more he learns, the more he wants to find out about the history and culture of Korea. He was lucky to find a mentor - Professor Montgomery who teaches English translation and interpretation at the same university and who runs a blog (ktlit.com).
He also introduces Korean writers and translates their works on Wikipedia, for which he earned the title of an honorary Seoul citizen in 2012. Professor Montgomery takes Sanjay on a trip to Gyeongju to help him learn about the history and culture of Korea.
This program shows what the two learned about the capital city of the ancient Silla Kingdom and two famous Korean writers from Gyeongju, Kim Dong-ni and Park Mok-wol.

Cheomseongdae Observatory (첨성대): is an astronomical observatory in Gyeongju, South Korea. Cheomseongdae means star-gazing tower in Korean. South Korea: Gyeongju - King Munmu's Tomb
I visit the charming and ancient city of Gyeongju, once the capital of the ancient Silla kingdom in South Korea. Here we are at what looks like a typical beach but in the background is a rocky islet - the underwater tomb of King Munmu. He was king back in 661 A.D. and had unified the three kingdoms of Korea. Before his death he gave specific instructions to be buried in a floating tomb so he could return as a dragon and protect his people and country...

Hello!
SUBSCRIBE to Discover Korea youtube channel for more videos ^^. Thank you!
The Tomb of King Muryeong, also known as Songsan-ri Tomb No. 7 (공주 송산리 7호분), is the ancient tumulus of King Muryeongwho ruled the Baekje from 501 to 523, and his queen. The rarity of intact Baekje tombs makes this one of the major archaeological discoveries in Korea and a crucial source for the understanding of Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea.

[Gyeongju trip] daereungwon, noseo nodong tombs. Top sight of gyeongju. 경주 산책 대릉원, 노서 노동 고분군
Daereungwon
The huge, walled park has 23 tombs of Silla monarchs and family members. From the outside, they resemble substantial grassy hillocks that echo the mountains outside town. Many of the tumuli have yielded fabulous treasures, on display at the Gyeongju National Museum. One tomb, Cheonmachong, is open to visitors, but was shut for restoration at the time of writing. Thirteen metres high and 47m in diameter, the tomb was built around the end of the 5th century.
Noseo,Nodong tombs
Near the main shopping area is the Noseo-dong district, where you'll find Silla tombs. Seobongchong and Geumgwanchong are adjacent tombs built between the 4th and 5th centuries. They were excavated between 1921 and 1946; the finds included two gold crowns. Across the road is Bonghwadae, with huge trees poking out of it. It's the largest extant Silla tomb at 22m high, with a 250m circumference; adjoining it is Geumnyeongchong. Houses covered much of this area until 1984, when they were removed.
Gyeongju
Known as ‘the museum without walls’, Gyeongju (경주) has more tombs, temples, rock carvings, pagodas, Buddhist statuary and palace ruins than any other place in South Korea. It's a lovely city, stuffed to the gills with history.
Most visitors touring the city centre are taken aback by the distinctive, low-lying urban centre sculpted by astonishing and substantial round grassy tombs – called tumuli – as well as traditional architecture, with colourful hip roofs set against a canvas of green rolling mountains.
Two of Gyeongju’s not-to-be-missed sites – Bulguk-sa and Seokguram – are in the outlying districts, within reach of public transport. Gyeongju and its surrounding districts covers a vast area – some 1323 sq km – so you should plan on several days' stay if you want to visit some of the lesser-known places.

South Korean Tombs Explained
If you have ever wondered what's the significance of all the man made look hills are than this video will help explain them, especially their use in the mountains of Korea.
Daeneungwon Royal Tombs and Observatory Cheomseongdae
Large ancient tombs of kings and noblemen of the Silla Kingdom can be seen around Gyeongju at the Daereungwon Tomb Complex (Cheonmachong Tomb). There are twenty-three large tombs located here; the most famous being Cheonmachong and Hwangnamdaechong. In an excavation of the area in the 1970's, Cheonmachong was discovered with a painting of mounted horse. This painting is the only discovered painting from the Silla Era
Cheomseongdae is the oldest existing astronomical observatory in Asia.
Constructed during the reign of Queen Seon-deok (632-647), it was used for observing the stars in order to forecast the weather. This stone structure is a beautiful combination of straight lines and curves, and was designated as National Treasure No.31 on December 20th, 1962.

Gyeongju Historical Area, where Silla Dynasty comes to life
경주 역사 지구, 신라왕조가 살아나는 곳
Sculptures, reliefs, pagodas, and the remains of temples. The Gyeongju Historic Areas contain a remarkable concentration of Korean Buddhist art... particularly from the 7th to 10th centuries.
Our Hwang Hojun introduces us to the Gyeongju Historic Areas: Korea's UNESCO World Heritage.
It's the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom.
And it continues to tell the story of the golden kingdom, even today.
The Gyeongju Historic Area is divided into five distinct areas, the Namsan Belt, the Wolsong Belt, the Tumuli Belt, the Hwangnyongsa Belt and the Sanseong Belt, where one can experience the birth and fall of Silla.
There are ten criteria UNESCO uses to assess whether a heritage candidate has outstanding universal value.
To be included on the World Heritage List, sites must meet at least one of the ten selection criteria.
The Gyeongju Historic Area was selected as a World Heritage Site in 2000 after meeting two of the criteria... exhibiting evidence of interchange of human values, and bearing exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization which has disappeared.
There is abundant evidence that Silla played a crucial role in the cultural communication in East Asia, Gyeongju being the final destination of the Maritime Silk Road.
Moreover, the city bears some archaeological significance as it preserves the features of the ancient kingdom's capital.
To name a few...
One cannot miss the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, in the Tumuli belt of the area, because of the numerous and prominent burial mounds containing the tombs of kings and nobles.
Since excavation started in the 1970s, over 40,000 relics have been found, including royal crowns and golden accessories.
One of the tombs rose to fame after a painting of a winged horse on birch bark was discovered.
The tombs not only demonstrate the lavish lifestyle of the royals, but the some excavated artifacts, including those made out of glass, show us Silla was more than just a kingdom sitting on the east end of Asia.
Rather, it was a country that actively traded with countries in the West, including Persian countries and even Rome.
Cheomseongdae, the world's oldest surviving observatory stands in the Wolseong Belt of the district.
By measuring the position of the sunlight shining through the small window on Cheomseongdae, it was possible to keep track of the 24 seasonal divisions, which was crucial for an agrarian society.
Built in the 7th century, Cheomseongdae's symmetrical and round structure, along with its deep pit filled with gravel and sand, made the ancient observatory earthquake-resistant.
As a matter of fact, it even survived the magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit Gyeongju last Monday.
Countless remnants of Silla, including the old palace site, give visitors the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the kingdom's past glories.
They built so many beautiful buildings and a beautiful town. This was really impressive. Yes.
Most impressive to see what is like a possible in the past. What was possible in the past.
The city itself is an open-air museum... a treasure trove that testifies to the unique, artistic, and international identity of the millennium-long Silla Dynasty.
