Khao Sok Thailand
Khao Sok is a national park in south Thailand located in Ban Ta Khun and the Phanom district of neighbouring Surat Thani province.
The whole park covers 645 sq km. It is actually the heart of a complex of five contiguous conservation sites that comprise the largest protected forest on the Thai-Malaysian peninsula, covering over 4,000 sq km.
The park is very spectacular with dripping thick native verdant rainforest, punctuated by towering outcrops of limestone cliffs or karsts, waterfalls and sparkling streams, an island studded lake, several caves, and many trails, mostly along rivers.
A beautiful large reservoir was created by the construction of the Chiaw Lan Dam (also known as the Ratchaprapha Dam) across the Paseang river; this Chiaw Lan Lake occupies some 165 sq km.
Limestone outcrops protruding from the lake can reach heights of 960m, which is three times the height of similar famous formations in Ao Phang-Nga.
I went to a 3 days 2 nights tour in Khao Sok with my friend Kaya (a tour agent and guest house owner in Phuket).
We slept on bamboo raft houses on the lake. The lake is absolutely beautiful and calm surrounded by mountains and forrest.
Phutawan Raft House @ Khao Sok National Park
Phutawan Raft House is located on Ratchaprapha Dam or Cheow Lan Lake in Surat Thani province. It is surrounded with a large number of towering limestone mountains in different shapes. The deep water of the lake and the green algae turn the colour of the water emerald green. So the refreshing lake is truly a pleasant place for relaxation.
The name “Phutawan” was inspired by Khun Ka – Chanjira Wanya, who established the raft house with Khun Pae – Narongrit Thongmusit in 2006. Initially, the raft house was called “Khlong Mui Raft House”. Later it was changed to “Phutawan Raft House”, because the area is surrounded by mountains on all four sides. And in the evening, the sun sets over the mountains in front of the raft house. So this is the origin of the name “Phutawan”.
In the first stage, the raft house had only 8 floating raft houses and a small canteen that could accommodate only a few dozen tourists, which was not enough for the increasing number of tourists. Later, as the raft house became well-known, more raft houses were built and total number rose to 32. A reception raft house was also built in response to the ever increasing number of tourists, especially those who love to relax amidst nature.
The outstanding feature of the floating raft houses of Phutawan Raft is that they have glass walls to provide the beautiful view of Cheow Lan Lake. Another good point is the food. Most dishes are based around freshwater fish caught from the lake. We can guarantee the freshness of material and the tastiness of our food which is cooked in the southern style to match the environment. Both local and foreign tourists who stay at Phutawan are fascinated with natural beauty and our friendly services.
Phutawan Raft House is located on Ratchaprapha Dam (Cheow Lan Lake) – 712/3 Mu 4, T. Khao Phang, A. Ban Ta Khun, which is 84 kilometers from Surat Thani town. To get there, take Highway No. 401, turn right at the 58 kilometer marker and drive for 12 kilometers. It takes only 30 minutes from the pier to Phutawan Raft House.
Phutawan Raft House provides many facilities and services to its guests, for example, boat tours, life jackets and kayaks. The pure natural surroundings and the emerald green waters will make you want to swim.

Our stay at Panvaree The Greenery, resort.
Our vacation started here at The Grennery Panvaree, Ban Ta Khun Surat Thani Thailand. Very friendly and professional staff, the boat tours were well done, and the food was great and allot to eat. Staying in a floating house was something new to try, not recommended for someone who is sea sick. Limited electricity in the day, on all night though noon, 4 stars from me.

The tropical rainforest of Southeast Asia today belongs to the oldest eco-systems in the world. The diversity of the flora has been dated back some 160 million years, which is older than both the Amazons-and the Central African rainforest. The rainforest on the Kra Isthmus has more than 200 species of trees per hectare which is more than any other place on the earth. In temperate rainforest by contrast it would be considered exceptionally diverse to have ten tree species per hectare.Tree-trunks tower 30 meters in the air, before the first branches begin to form the canopy, - adding another 30 - 35 meter to the total height. Trees like these usually belong to the dipterocarp family and may be several centuries old. They are the preferred trees for gibbons when singing, grooming and sleeping, and they provide excellent habitat for hornbill nesting cavities. The fertile undergrowth, is a favored habitat for countless other species. The Kingdom of Thailand has since the seventies, made a great effort to preserve, what is left of the original forest.Khao Sok National Park is in fact only a small part of a area with virgin rainforest covering several thousand square kilometers on the peninsula between the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. The rainforest continues well into Burma (Myanmar). — sammen med LINE Thailand - Official og Nature Lovers.

Khao Sok National Park is located on the mountain ridge that separates the east and westcoasts of the Thai peninsula. It is situated in the west of Surat Thani province, in Ban Ta Khun and Phanom districts. Established in 1980, Khao Sok National Park was the 22nd park to be designated out of the 77 Thai National Parks. It covers an area of 738.74 square kilometers. Originally, the north side of the park was bounded by the Pasaeng River. However, since the construction of Rachabrapah Dam in 1982 and the formation of the artificial lake, the boundary of the park has been extended to include the reservoir. The reservoir itself covers an area of 165 square kilometers. Beyond the lake extends the wildlife sanctuaries of Khlong Saeng and Khlong Nakha and Kaeng Krung National Park. To the west of Khao Sok lies Sri Phang Nga National Park. Lying astride the junction of the provinces of Ranong, Phang Nga and Surat Thani, these reserves make up the largest area of continuous forest preserve in the Thai peninsula with 4,000 square kilometers. It is only in this area that large mammals such as tigers and elephants have survived in the south of Thailand, although little is known about their status.
Ratchaprapha (Rajjaprabha) Dam - The complete of this dam in 1988 gave birth to a huge inland lake of about 168 square kilometres, which is adorned with hundreds of islands and islets
