Traveling the Copper Canyon Railroad in Mexico - Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico (El Chepe)
The Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway or Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico (El Chepe) is one of North America's most scenic excursion railways. Completed in 1961 after 90 years of construction, the 400-mile/700-kilometer railway is an engineering marvel that passes through Copper Canyon, traverses 38 bridges and crosses 86 tunnels. At one point it makes a 180 degree turn inside a mountain! This vid documents segments of the journey.
Northern Mexico & Copper Canyon
Our friend Lee York takes us on a excursion through NORTHERN MEXICO to visit COPPER CANYON.
We'll begin in Topolobampo and enjoy the beautiful bay. Then we'll take El Chepe, part of the Chihuahua-Pacific Railway, into the higher regions of Chijuajua.
Next we join in some local Independence Day festivities, and enjoy regional ceremonies and dances at Cerocahui.
Our central destination is Copper Canyon (Spanish: Barrancas del Cobre). This is actually a group of six separate rivers that create a vast region of dramatic canyons.
The area is inhabited by the indigenous Tarahumara people who now support themselves largely through tourism.
After a brief stop at Lake Arareco, we explore the modest cliff-side dwellings of the local people.
-------
Here are a few more details via Wikipedia:
Topolobampo is a port on the Gulf of California in northwestern Sinaloa, Mexico. The port connects the northern Mexican states through the Chihuahua-Pacific Railroad.
The Chihuahua-Pacific Railway, also known as El Chepe, is a major rail line in northwest Mexico, traversing the Copper Canyon, a rugged series of canyons that have led some to call this the most scenic railroad trip on the continent. It is both an important transportation system for locals and a draw for tourists.
Cerocahui is a town in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, located in the Sierra Tarahumara it is internationally recognized for being one of the main places of festivities of Holy Week of the Tarahumara ethnic groups.
Copper Canyon (Spanish: Barrancas del Cobre) is a group of six distinct canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the southwestern part of the state of Chihuahua in northwestern Mexico. The canyons were formed by six rivers that drain the western side of the Sierra Tarahumara (a part of the Sierra Madre Occidental). All six rivers merge into the Rio Fuerte and empty into the Gulf of California. The walls of the canyon are a copper/green color, which is where the name originates.
The Tarahumara or Rarámuris are an indigenous community in northern Mexico, in the part of the Sierra Madre Occidental that crosses territory of the state of Chihuahua and the southwest of the states of Durango and Sonora . The Rarámuri endónimo means the one of the light feet or runners on foot.
Lake Arareco is a lake high in the Sierra Madre Occidental range, within Chihuahua state in northwestern Mexico. The lake is U-shaped. It is surrounded by unusual rock formations, and a fragrant pine forest. It is located about 14 kilometres (8.7 mi)s south of Creel A few kilometres away a scenic canyon has the Cascada Cusárare waterfall, which drops 30 metres (98 ft).

Estacion de Chihuahua, Mexico 28/Dec/2013 メキシコ鉄道チワワ駅 Chihuahua Station, Mexico
I returned to the station at 9:00AM and I obtained a ticket to Creel. The old man at the ticket office was friendly. Some hotels are located in front of the station and I was told that there was vacant.

CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO | A Day in the Historic Center
Chihuahua is often overlooked as a tourist destination, but there are plenty of things to do when in the Historic Downtown of the Capital city of Chihuahua. We took a day exploring the downtown area, and not only is it beautiful but there are some very impressive structures and tons of history here.
Check out our day as we explore the center of Chihuahua. We went ahead and took a tour around the city on El Tarahumara. We were pleasantly surprised that we got so much out of the $5 tour. If interested in getting more information you can have a peek at their website.

All Aboard El Chepe ???? Welcome to the Copper Canyons!
Finally! We have made it aboard and hope you all are buckled up for a wild ride! We have outlined everything you need to know to board El Chepe below---
--How to Buy Tickets--
This part is a little weird, but follow these steps and you will be good to go! The official El Chepe website is great for looking up rates and routes, but there is no clear and easy way to actually purchase tickets that I could find. Here are the steps needed to buy a ticket—
Send an email to chepe.reservaciones@ferromex.mx with ALL of the following information:
• Full names of each person traveling
• Age of each person
• A contact email address
• Detailed itinerary
• If you are booking the El Chepe Express train, you will need to specify which service you would like to purchase—either “Tourist” or “Executive”
Someone from the company will email back with instructions on how to pay. We used TransferWise to buy our tickets and transfer the money directly from our US bank account to the Mexican account for El Chepe. It is fast, super easy, and has relatively low fees.
--El Chepe Express vs El Chepe Regional--
There are two different trains with two slightly different routes available. El Chepe Regional is the more economical train and it travels from Los Mochis all the way north to Chihuahua then back to Los Mochis. El Chepe Express is the nicer train created more for tourism. The Express train starts in Los Mochis but only goes north to Creel before heading back down to Los Mochis. The train itself is nicer and hits only the most popular stops along of the route of El Fuerte, Divisadero, and Creel.
--How to Get There--
From Mexico City, the easiest way to board El Chepe is to fly into Los Mochis (we flew Volaris). Coming from somewhere outside of Mexico, I would recommend flying directly into Los Mochis and if that is not an option, head on into Mexico City and catch the inexpensive Volaris flight from there. The trains leaves promptly at 6:00am from Los Mochis on the designated morning of your departure, so you will likely need to stay at least one night in Los Mochis. No problem—grab a taxi from the airport (240 pesos for a private taxi). There are tons of big brand hotel options for relatively good prices in Los Mochis. Would recommend checking out the “Benjamin Francis Johnston Botanical Garden for your afternoon entertainment in Los Mochis..it is a free huge garden/park/open space thing that is great to wander around after sitting on a flight! Head to “El Leñador” for lunch or dinner—there are several locations all around Los Mochis. You will also most likely need one hotel night for the night you return to Los Mochis after the train ride since the train arrives around 9:30pm.
--Tips and Tricks--
• Bring a jacket. The train is COLD at 6:00am and there may or may not be someone who offers to turn on the heater.
• Pack snacks and water. The website says no food or drink allowed but plenty of people were eating. Also—you will want something in the morning. There is a restaurant car but it doesn’t open until just after 7am.
• No need to arrive super early. The website recommends arriving to the Los Mochis train station at 5:00am for the departure at 6:00am. Since you will have your printed tickets in hand, there is really no need to be there a full hour early to sit for 50 minutes until boarding is opened up.

Chihuahua, Mexico
Located in the northern region, Chihuahua is Mexico's largest state. Due to its indigenous and European influences, this state, known for its hot climate, offers an interesting cultural mix in its towns, cities and wonderful countryside. In the city of Chihuahua, the state capital, you can walk along the streets and check out the elegant plazas built in the colonial era and during the mining boom in the 19th century. In border city Ciudad Juarez, you can visit modern museums and entertaining recreational areas.
The state of Chihuahua also offers interesting archaeological zones like Paquime, a mysterious pre-Hispanic city of adobe constructions. In the surrounding areas, you can visit diverse nature parks, such as Medanos de Samalayuca, which is ideal for mountain bike riding, or the Cascada de Basaseachi, an excellent spot for rappelling and rock climbing. And then of course there's the famous Copper Canyon, one of the largest canyon systems in the world. In this region you can attend various sports events or go hiking to observe a wide variety of plant and animal species. If you'd like the full tour of the canyon, we recommend that you take Chihuahua-Pacifico train route, also known as CHEPE, which makes stop in the towns of Creel and Cuauhtemoc, where you can visit the largest Mennonite community in the state and try their excellent cheeses. During the tour, you can also buy traditional crafts made by the Tarahumara (also called the Raramuri) people.

ALL ABOARD EL CHEPE TRAIN | Chihuahua to Creel | Cusárare Waterfall
If El Chepe sounds unfamiliar it's probably because not many people know that there is this amazing scenic passenger train that takes you through some of the most incredible landscapes you could imagine. El Chepe is the only Passenger train in Mexico that takes you through the Barrancas del Cobre or Copper Canyon, a canyon system that is 4 times larger than the grand canyon and can reach up to 1 mile in depth at some points.
It is both a tourist and commuter train so if you just want to hop on to get from one town to the other or buy a ticket with the ability to jump off at different stops to explore the town for a few days you have options. For more info:
We went with a tourist ticket and chose Creel as our first disembarkment. We took the train 5 and a half hours south to the Pueblo Magico of Creel. This was the first of many Pueblo Magicos that we will be seeing as we journey through Mexico, and we have become huge fans of the Pueblo Magico initiative after our time in Creel.
On our first day, we check into our hotel, La Troje and then booked a tour with one of the local guides. We explore some of the more popular tourist sites in the area on our first afternoon there and ended up having a pretty heartwarming and magical time in the Pueblo Magico.
We stayed at La Troje, a highly rated but very affordable option, which ended up being a very nice place, with great rooms and amenities, personal attention from our host Guillermo, and just an overall great place to stay.
La Troje:
However, you do have to climb stairs to reach the rooms, so if that's a problem for you, there are some other options. We went to have a beer here at their restaurant and it looked nice and cozy. It also has good reviews.
BestWestern Plus:
We understand booking tours ahead of time is important for some travelers so we feel confident recommending Omar as a guide. He offered a good price and was very accommodating with our private tour. He said they can also offer tours in English but you would need to call and set that up in advance.

The Copper Canyon and El Chepe Train in Mexico (Hot Springs, Adventure Park and More)
The Copper Canyon, also known as Las Barrancas del Cobre, is a set of seven canyons located in the northwestern part of Mexico.
We rode the Chepe train throughout this epic adventure where we got to do some amazing things like ride the longest zip-line in Mexico, swim in the relaxing waters of Recowata hot springs, try delicious food, and ride a four-wheeler down the canyon.
We’ll show you where to get on the train, fun things to do along the train route, and where to find the most delicious Chiles Rellenos.

The Chihuahua-Pacifico Railroad traverses this spectacular natural wonder. Located in Mexico's Sierra Madre Mountains.
The majestic heights known as Las Barrancas del Cobre (Copper Canyon), a name that derives from the stunning greenish copper hue of the canyon walls. Spanning a total length of 59,545 km. (37,000 miles).
