Chepstow Castle
Chepstow Castle (Welsh: Cas-gwent) at Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain. Located above cliffs on the River Wye, construction began in 1067 under the instruction of the Norman Lord William fitzOsbern. Originally known as Striguil, it was the southernmost of a chain of castles built in the Welsh Marches, and with its attached lordship took the name of the adjoining market town in about the 14th century.
In the 12th century the castle was used in the conquest of Gwent, the first independent Welsh kingdom to be conquered by the Normans. It was subsequently held by two of the most powerful Anglo-Norman magnates of medieval England, William Marshal and Richard de Clare. However, by the 16th century its military importance had waned and parts of its structure were converted into domestic ranges. Although re-garrisoned during and after the English Civil War, by the 1700s it had fallen into decay. With the later growth of tourism, the castle became a popular visitor destination.
The ruins were Grade I listed on 6 December 1950. For more info visit:

Breaking News - Severn tolls' final day after 800 years
Severn bridges: Final day of at least 800 years of tolls
Sunday marks the final day of a centuries' old tax of paying to cross between south Wales and south-west England before the toll is removed.Charges on both the M4 and M48 Severn bridges are being abolished - saving commuters as much as £1,400 a year.Passengers have had to pay to cross the Severn Estuary, with its treacherous tides, since Roman times and the first recorded ferry crossing was in 1775.Monday will be a very historic day, said historian Anne Rainsbury. It'll be the first time you can cross the Severn Estuary for free.
Car drivers had to pay two shillings and six pennies each way after the first Severn bridge was opened by the Queen in 1966.Now the Severn toll has spiralled to £5.60 - but the charge is just one way, westbound heading into south Wales.
It has been forever thus, added Ms Rainsbury, curator of Chepstow Museum on the Welsh side of the original bridge. You've always had to pay someone; a ferryman, a railway company or a bridge toll collector to cross the Severn Estuary - so Monday's removal of the tolls is a hugely significant moment, especially in Wales. The first ferry crossing over the Severn Estuary - which has the second highest tidal range in the world - was between Aust and Beachley, essentially the path of the first bridge, on the narrowest width of the estuary.
The first written reference to it is in a document from the 12th Century when the owner was the Lord of the Manor of Tidenham, part of the Chepstow Lordship. It cost a coach with six horses an eye-watering 16 shillings to board the ferry on the mile-long route known as the old passage in 1775.It was a huge amount back then, said local historian Tim Ryan, who is trying to restore one of the old Severn ferries.
But if you could afford a coach and six horses, then you could afford the fee - and it

The First Ever Investigation of Cardiff Museum Ghost Hunt
31st October 2015 8pm - 3am
Ticket Price; £59.00 “ Cardiff Museum Ghost Hunt” Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NP
What to Expect: The night commences at 8pm with a Health and Safety followed by a paranormal presentation. DeadLive Team will escort you around the venue with lights on. Following this the lights will be turned off and the night will continue with smaller group vigils and team work using a range of paranormal equipment including dowsing rods, K2 meters, and table tipping for those who want to participate.
On the Cardiff Museum Ghost Hunt it is advisable to wear layered clothing as temperatures can get very cold on investigations and we recommend flat shoes with non-slip soles, as you may well be walking around in the dark and on staircases with no lighting. Don’t forget your torch as the event does take place in rooms that can be dark. You are welcome to bring cameras and personal paranormal investigation equipment.
The Cardiff Museum Ghost Hunt hub offers a place to take a break, sit, have a tea/coffee (provided) catch up with other group members and toilets are to hand. You are welcome to bring your own snacks. Paranormal activity at events can never be guaranteed. However, the more positive energy we have between the groups the better it will be to encourage a connection with the spirits of the venue. Please note alcohol is not permitted during the investigation.
