Oldest Mosque in the World -- Cheraman Juma Masjid(Hijra 7), INDIA
The Second Oldest Mosque in the World is Cheraman Juma Masjid near Kodungallur in Kerala, INDIA. Cheraman Perumal, 58th King Bhaskara Ravi Varma should be one of the early ones to embrace Islam outside Arabia. The story goes like he went to Mecca for Haj and died on his way back near Muscat. Malik Ibn Dinar, one of the 13 disciples of Prophet Muhammed reached Muziris, with a letter from Cheraman Perumal which mentioned 'the bearer should be treated Well'. He was given permission to spread their religion , he built mosques throughout Kerala. The very first Mosque that was built is 'Cheraman Juma Masjid', near Kodungallur. This mosque is facing 'East' and inside the main prayer hall there's a 1000 year old 'Nilavilakku'(Traditional Lamp) of Kerala, even now Occupies the same place since it was brought in. This stands as a proof of religious harmony in these region and they also celebrate 'Vijayadashami', an auspicious day in Kerala, for beginning learning in any field. In 2004 when asked about the motivation for holding such a ceremony in the mosque, the Khatheeb told The Hindu that as per Islamic faith, the first Ayat (message of enlightenment) that Prophet Nabi had received from God in Koran was Iqra'a'' (`to read'). Islam is a religion which has given great emphasis on reading and studying. So there is nothing in Islam that forbids the holding of a ceremony which initiates a child into the world of letters and knowledge.''

LOCATION:
Masjid is located in the Paravur - Kodungalloor Road, NH-66 at Kodungalloor taluk, Thrissur District.
HISTORY OF MASJID:
Since ancient times, trade relations between Arabia and India were active. Even before Islam had been established in Arabia, Arab traders visited the Malabar region, which was a major link between the ports of India and Southeast Asia.
With the advent of Islam, the Arab merchants became carriers of the new religion and they propagated it wherever they went.[11] According to Keralan legend, Cheraman Perumal, the Chera king, went to Arabia where he met Muhammad and embraced Islam and changed his name to Tajuddin.[12]
From there he had sent letters with Malik Ibn Dinar to his relatives in Kerala, asking them to be courteous to the latter.[3] According to Burnell he was a contemporary of Islamic Prophet Muhammad.[13]
In the 7th Century, a group of Arabs led by Malik Bin Deenar and Malik bin Habib arrived in Thrissur District constructed a Masjid at Kodungalloor, naming it after their contemporary Cheraman Perumal.[14]
The mosque has an ancient oil lamp which always burns and which is believed to be more than a thousand years old. People of all religions bring oil for the lamp as offering. Like most, this mosque allows entry for Non-Muslims.[15] The then president of India Abdul Kalam is among the notable visitors to this mosque.
In April 2016, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a gold-plated replica of the Cheraman Juma Masjid to Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud

India's First Masjid / Mosque 629 AD | Cheraman Juma Masjid | Kodungallur | Trissur | Kerala |
The Cheramaan Juma Mosque is a mosque in Methala, Kodungallur Taluk, Thrissur District in the Indian state of Kerala. A legend claims that it was built in 629 AD, which makes it the first mosque in India and the oldest mosque in the Indian subcontinent. It was built by Malik Deenar, Persian companion of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, on the orders of the successor of Cheraman Perumal Tajuddin, the Chera King of modern-day Kerala. The mosque was constructed in Kerala style with hanging lamps, making the historicity of its date claims more convincing
The mosque was completely destroyed by the Portuguese in 1504 when Lopo Soares de Albergaria attacked the port of Kodungallur. The old building was built some time after the 1504 de Algabaria attack (i.e., from mid-16th to the early 17th century). Modern corridors and halls were built in 1984. The 1984 extensions, which surround the old building, conceal almost all of the exterior features of the old building.
According to some legends, Cheraman Perumal (Cheraman Perumal being the title held by Chera kings) witnessed the splitting of the moon, a supernatural event mentioned in the Quran as a miracle performed by the Islamic Prophet Muhammad when asked for one by Meccan unbelievers. The bewildered King confirmed with his astrologers that the incident had taken place, but didn't know what to make of it. Arab merchants who had arrived at a Malabar port, a bustling global marketplace, sought audience with the King to have his permission to visit Ceylon. In conversation with them, the King learnt about Muhammad, made his son the regent of his kingdom and travelled back with the Arab merchants to meet the man himself.
The story goes that Cheraman Perumal arrived in Arabia with a gift of ginger pickles for Muhammad and his companions and converted to Islam at the feet of Prophet Muhammad
