A Visit to Cherney Maribel Caves County Park
Near Manitowoc, Wisconsin, there is a lovely little park by the shore of one of the Two Rivers which has several small caves. One, the New Hope Cave, is open to the public. Mike Madden was shown around both inside and out by caver Gary Soule. Due to a recent flood, the cave was being worked on and we needed boots.
Nearby is an old dilapidated hotel that was a popular tourist destination many years ago, when people took the train from Milwaukee for the waters. One of the caves, Spring Cave, still flows, emptying into the nearby river.
This tour was in May of 2013. A tornado came through the park in the summer, tearing up many trees, signs and park structures, so it was temporarily closed to the public until it was cleaned up.
Maribel Caves in Manitowoc County, WI #TravelWisconsin #DiscoverWisconsin
Maribel Caves + Cherney Park is located in Manitowoc County, WI.
It is home to 7 caves along a rugged cliffline with a beautiful trail system intertwining along the river.
As you walk you can feel the rich history of the area that used to be a luxury hotel and spa where travelers weary from the busy lives would come to rest.
It is rumored that Dillinger and Capone even visited (although this hasn't been verified) and that the hotel and caves were a site where bottled water was made because of the fresh spring water.

Maribel Caves Hotel
This is the Maribel Caves Hotel, it was built in 1900 by the Steinbrecker family. It was a 200 acre health spa and resort.
A hydraulic ram-jet pump and spring house supplied mineral spring water to guest of the hotel.
The water coming out of the spring at the base of the bluff was the main attraction of the hotel for both drinking and bathing.
The hotel offered the waters as a means to cleanse the body.
Later analysis of the water showed it was high in magnesium .
The same spring can be seen today at the north end of the park.
The town of Maribel became a main stop on the railroad because of the hotel.
Many people would come up from Chicago to enjoy the resort
The hotel closed in 1918 after 1933 it was mainly used as a bar untill 1985 when the interior of the hotel building was gutted by fire.
