Ukraine Soldiers' Portraits: New Chernivtsi exhibition to raise money for Ukrainian army
A Canadian artist with Ukrainian origins Taras Polataiko has opened an exhibition called “War. 11 portraits” in Chernivtsi, south-west Ukraine. His work features faces of Ukrainian soldiers, wounded on the frontlines fighting militant, printed onto canvass.
The artist recorded conversations and snapped photos of the injured troops in Ukrainian military hospitals over the space of a month.

Malanka is a Ukrainian authentic holiday which attracts attention by its unusualness local Bukovina citizens and guests from other lands and states. The holiday Malanka got its name after the Orthodox holiday in honor of Saint Melaniia. It differs by the manner of celebration according to the region. However at Bukovina this holiday has an exceptional value.
Malanka is celebrated on January 13, on the eve of St. Basil the Great. It is an interesting fact, in the Malanka Holiday only men are allowed to take part. Fellows dress up in various characters, they wear masks, and reproduce various funny events of life etc. Traditional and major characters are: guy - Malanka, grandfather and grandmother (so called did and baba). However every village has their own characters which can differ from each other.

Chernivtsi is a city in western Ukraine. It's known for the 1875-founded Chernivtsi National University, which features Romanesque and Byzantine architecture and the Chernivtsi University Botanical Garden. At the heart of the old town is Central Square, with the blue, neoclassical City Hall. Nearby, the Chernivtsi Museum of Art exhibits 17th- to 20th-century art from the historic region of Bukovina in a former bank.

Chernivtsi is a city in Western Ukraine with a large architectural and cultural heritage from the times of the Habsburg Empire. Back then known by its German name Czernowitz, the city began to flourish in the late 18th century. The German language became the lingua franca due to the influence of the Habsburgs and the large Jewish population. Chernivtsi was the capital of Bukovina - a region covering parts of present southwestern Ukraine and northeastern Romania. Literary figures including the late 19th-century novelist, travel writer and journalist Karl Emil Franzos published their works about the city and the region in German.
The architectural heritage of the city is very well preserved. Most of the buildings in the city center originate from the late 19th and early 20th century, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire built beautiful houses that resembled the architectural styles of contemporary buildings in Vienna - mainly Art Nouveau style.
Chernivtsi also became a center of both Romanian and Ukrainian national movements. It became part of Romania after 1918. The large mainly German and Yiddish-speaking Jewish population of the city perished during W W II. From 1945 to 1991, Chernivtsi was part of the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union. During that time, the architectural heritage suffered greatly from decay and neglect. In 1991, Chernivtsi became part of present Ukraine.
In recent years, many of the once dilapidated buildings in the city center have been restored. Today, Chernivtsi is a colorful city with a rich architectural and cultural heritage.
