Why the Sochi Olympics are the Most Expensive in History

The Olympics are as much about money as they are about sports. Between broadcasting rights, merchandising, sponsorships and construction of the Olympic venues themselves, there's a lot of money to be made. In the case of Russia's Winter Olympics in Sochi, there's more money to be made than ever before, especially if you're a friend of President Putin.
The 2014 Winter Games have cost Russia about $50 billion, making them the most expensive in history. Corruption watchdogs say it's ordinary Russians who will end up footing the bill for this excess, not private investors as Putin has suggested.
We went to Sochi to investigate the claims of corruption and kickbacks, tour some of the most expensive Olympic venues ever built, and talk to Sochi residents who have been pushed aside to make room for Putin's man-made mountains of money.

Russia: Alexei Leonov unveils Elbe Day monument on anniversary
A monument dedicated to the meeting of Soviet and American Armies on the Elbe River in 1945 was unveiled in Moscow, Monday, marking the anniversary of Elbe Day.
The Russian cosmonaut and first human to conduct a spacewalk Alexei Leonov opened the monument together with current US Embassy attache General Bruce McClintock. After the ceremony, Leonov said that the monument is symbol of great relationship between the great nations.
SOT, Alexei Leonov, former cosmonaut (Russian): We have shown to the whole world, that despite the difference in our mentalities, all political disagreements and the Cold War, we were saying Let's live together and also the famous phrase Together we are better. Thank you for coming today to this symbol of great relationship between the great nations.
SOT, General Kevin Ryan, former military attache of the US Embassy in Moscow (English): The monument is important, because we have the similar monument in Washington already for many years. And it shows the same photo of the soldiers shaking hands and meeting. And I think it is important for us to remember that we have to keep trying to connect, even on a broken bridge over the river, we still have to try to connect today and in the future.
SOT, General Kevin Ryan, former military attache of the US Embassy in Moscow (English): I do not think that it is a Cold War. I know, that Medvedev called it Cold War. Some people in America call it Cold War too. I do not think it is a Cold War, but it is a bad time. It is a bad time for our relationship. We have serious disagreements and those disagreements have to be worked out.

STORYLINE
A prominent Russian opposition leader has urged the West to refuse entry to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his senior political colleagues in response for what he described as repression against dissent.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov spoke in Moscow on Monday after spending 15 days in jail over what he called fabricated charges following an anti-government rally.
His December 31 arrest drew outrage in the West and prompted Amnesty International to call him a prisoner of conscience.
Nemtsov said he was jailed on the false testimony of police officers by a judge who was following government orders.
The judge rejected Nemtsov's plea to consider video footage demonstrating that he wasn't violating public order or resisting police.
Nemtsov said that the jailing of him and other opposition activists again demonstrated that Russia lacked an independent judiciary.
Sanctions have to be imposed against those miscreants, against these people who are responsible for the destruction of the constitution, the destruction of the election, the establishment of censorship, the destruction of federalism and local government, and so on and so on. You can call the list what you want, the list of those who are sitting here, the Nemtsov list, whatever you wish. At the top of this list has to be the name Putin, said Nemtsov.
However, Nemtsov acknowledged that it was unlikely European MPs would deny Putin entry to the EU.
I do not believe that the European MPs will vote for a decision to block (Russian Prime Minister) Putin and (Belarusian President) Lukashenko in the European Union. I don't think so. The fact is that he is the Prime Minister and lots of countries depend on Russian energy resources, he said.
Other leading opposition activists were also jailed by the same judge.
Russian police routinely break up opposition rallies but protest leaders are usually only detained for a few hours before being set free.
But the jailing of Nemtsov, a longtime Putin opponent, and other top opposition activists marked a toughening of authorities' response to street protests.
Putin, who shifted into the prime minister's seat after two presidential terms, is widely expected to reclaim the presidency.

Borderland - E5/8 - A Clear Dictatorship
In this series Jelle Brandt Corstius explores the border countries between Russia and Europe, from Latvia to Moldavia, West and East Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. What is the picture that the Russians and their neighbours have of each other, how are the relationships between powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the surrounding countries treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
Episode 5: A clear dictatorship
Belarus is often called the last dictatorship in Europe. But is that true? This country is located on the main route between Russia and Europe. The focus has always been on Russia, but that seems to be changing. And: more than half this country was radioactively contaminated by the Chernobyl disaster. How does the country deal with this?

Kursk submarine disaster
This article incorporates information from the equivalent article on the Russian Wikipedia.
The Kursk submarine disaster occurred during a major Russian naval exercise in the Barents Sea on Saturday, 12 August 2000. The Kursk, an Oscar-class submarine (Russian: Project 949A Антей), was preparing to load a dummy 65-76 Kit torpedo when a fire, followed by a large explosion, caused the ship to sink. Nearby ships registered the explosion but did not know what to make of it. A second, much larger, explosion took place two minutes and 15 seconds later, and was powerful enough to register on seismographs as far away as Alaska.
