Road Trip #394 - I-40 West - North Carolina Mile 20 to Tennessee State Line
This will be the last video in North Carolina on I-40. We begin in Haywood County at Mile 20, and drive west through the Smoky Mountains on a steep and winding highway. Along this route, we see low speed limits and warning signs of rock slides. We also encounter a tunnel. We finish up at the Tennessee State Line.

Table Rock State Park South Carolina, Sacred Ground for Cherokee Indians
Troop 10 visited Table Rock State Park in Pickens County, SC. We hiked the 3.6-mile trail to the summit, 3124 feet above sea level, a round-trip about 4.5 hours in duration. Table Rock is a large granite-faced mountain on the Eastern Escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. According to the Cherokee legend, a great spirit loomed over these mountains, casting a bluish haze over the area, giving the name to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The great spirit sat on nearby Stool Mountain to eat his meals on the flatter Table Rock.
The music in this video is a lady playing a Native American Courting Flute. I happened upon her sitting on the deck of the visitors center and was able to record her playing. Its peaceful tones seemed like the perfect backdrop to this story.
Table Rock State Park has primitive group camping areas for Scout groups and is open year-round. The hike to the summit is strenuous but the pay off at the top is an amazing view of the South Carolina Piedmont. I highly recommend this trip.

South Carolina has mountains? and waterfalls?
When I was a kid growing up in the midwest, I thought South Carolina was just one big swamp! But, I was wrong! Along the border of South Carolina and North Carolina there are 3000 foot mountains, essentially the start of the Blue Ridge. We journey to one of South Carolina's state parks and spend a day exploring on Lake Jocassee!

PAC/WCP Program - The Cherokee Path
(Hang in there...after the intro., the sound is GREAT!)
The Pacolet Area Conservancy (PAC) and Walnut Creek Preserve (WCP) held a free program about the Cherokee Path presented by Dennis Chastain of SC Wildlife magazine. The program was held at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve on April 5, 2014.
Dennis Chastain discussed the Cherokee Path and what is known about old Native American paths and roads in the Upstate. He also talked about William Moultrie, one of the original surveyors in this area.
Dennis Chastain is an award-winning outdoor writer, interpretive naturalist and modern-day explorer. He has been writing feature articles for South Carolina Wildlife magazine and other outdoor publications for more than twenty years.
This program is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation, and thank you to Delores Lastinger for the grant that allowed PAC to purchase equipment to record this program!
PAC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit conservation organization (land trust) founded in 1989 to Protect and Conserve the area's natural resources (PACs mission). PAC works with area landowners to ensure the long-term protection of their property through voluntary conservation easements (agreements) which enable landowners to maintain ownership of their property, preserving precious natural resources (open lands, forests, wildlife habitat, scenic vistas, farmland, stream banks, etc.), and potentially obtain significant federal, state, and local tax benefits. PACs vision is a community living and growing in harmony with our natural resources and or goal is to provide a legacy that will endure and be valued by generations to come. PAC works diligently to provide leadership to encourage conservation and provide education programs emphasizing native species appreciation and responsible land use practices to help -- save the places you love.
