Ocoee River Whitewater Rafting 16 Hiawassee Shoals
The Toccoa River and Ocoee River are actually a single 93-mile-long (150 km) river that flows northwestward through the southern Appalachian Mountains of the southeastern United States. It is called the Toccoa for its 56 miles (90 km) through Georgia, until it reaches the twin cities of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee, at the truss bridge which connects Georgia 5 (Blue Ridge Street) with Tennessee 68 and Georgia 60 (Ocoee Street and Toccoa Street). The remainder is called the Ocoee through Tennessee, known for its whitewater rafting, and host to whitewater slalom events during the Centennial 1996 Summer Olympics held primarily in Atlanta, about 100 miles (160 km) to the south. The Ocoee River is a tributary of the Hiwassee River, which it joins in Polk County, Tennessee, near the town of Benton. It was an important river for both the Cherokee and Creek tribes.
The Ocoee's flow is controlled by the Tennessee Valley Authority via three dams. Most often the riverbed is nearly dry in the ten-mile (16 km) stretch used for sporting, the water being diverted through flumes along the side of the mountains. Ocoee #2 dam diverted water, from the middle section of the river, through the flume, until a 2010 rock slide washed out part of the flume, which is currently under repair. The dam was originally built in 1913 by the East Tennessee Power Company to provide hydroelectric power to the new Alcoa company, which was starting aluminum production operations in Blount County, Tennessee, south of Knoxville.
The three Ocoee dams are numbered sequentially, with #1 being the farthest downstream and #3 being the farthest upstream. TVA acquired the two original dams (Ocoee #1 and Ocoee #2) in 1939 and started building Ocoee #3 dam in 1940. These dams generate an average of 67,000 kilowatts of electricity in total. The Middle Section contains some 20 named rapids and provides recreational opportunities throughout its eight-month season. One of the largest rapids on the Middle Ocoee, Hell's Hole, runs right beneath the bridge leading to the power station, with Powerhouse, a significant ledge with a strong hydraulic, right after it. Upstream (to the southeast), TVA also operates Blue Ridge Dam, which creates Lake Blue Ridge (called Blue Ridge Reservoir by TVA).
The whitewater slalom events during the 1996 Summer Olympics were conducted on a one-mile Olympic whitewater course that is fed by releases of water from Ocoee #3. The Ocoee Whitewater Center was built by the U.S. Forest Service for this purpose, including a large building along U.S. 64, whose westbound lanes were originally built as the parking and staging area, allowing it to later become a divided highway in the immediate area to handle summertime traffic. A 4.5-mile whitewater rafting area farther downstream is fed by water released from Ocoee Dam #2. The Olympic section was not open to the public until after the Olympics, while the middle section has been open to the public since the 1970s, mainly for daytime releases of water on weekends and holidays. After the Olympics, rafting tours (including bus transportation) are provided by several different companies located in both directions on U.S. 64, which runs next to the river for a few miles (several kilometers).

Epic Day Cherokee National Forest - Ocoee Tennessee
An Epic hike through the Tennessee backwoods! As we hiked one of the nearby mountains we came upon a view of the Hiawassee River, on the top of the mountain there was a big hole drilled in the ground. The drove back to the Ocoee lake, where we crossed logs to avoid the muddy ground.

Clemmer Trail to Clear Creek Trail mtb ride outside of Ocoee, TN
Having already ridden most of the trails at Chilhowee, east of Ocoee, TN, earlier this year, I wanted to return to check out the Clear Creek Trail. On this ride, I rode up Clemmer, which is a decently brutal climb (makes for a super fun downhill), then went over to Benton Falls, thinking there was a connector trail to the Clear Creek Trail, but I couldn't find it. So back up Clemmer, closer to the campground, I found the Clear Creek Trail.
I didn't know much about this trail aside from one video I recently watched. I knew there was rock and should be overgrown somewhat...yes, it's rocky, and yes, it's overgrown in some areas. For me, not all of the downhill rocky areas were ride-able...I had to walk a fair amount of it, but it was still fun.
For anyone interested in the route I took, here's a link to my Strava route:

Wildfire Closes Chilhowee Section of Cherokee National Forest
by John Madewell A wildfire in Polk County has caused a road, campground and trails to be closed in the Cherokee National Forest. The Ocoee Ranger District is calling the blaze the Powerline Fire.Last Thursday, strong, gusting winds blew trees into power lines running across the Chilhowee section. Firefighters believe that triggered the blaze.U.S. Forest Service firefighter Alex Faught said, It's just so dry right now and the conditions are pretty extreme now for this time of year for us, it just took a little spark.About 100 people have been working to control this fire. It's estimated it will burn 1,600 acres before complete containment. And firefighters are using Forest Service Road 77, which is closed, as a firefighting tool. FS Road 77 serves as a natural border on one side of the blaze. In addition, they're using fire to fight this fire.Crews use diesel fueled drip torches to start fires along the road. The underbrush lights almost immediately. The desired effect is for the lit fires to meet the uncontrolled fire and rob it of any fuel. The main fire is still a pretty good ways from our containment lines so what we're trying to do is to burn along those containment lines to give us a buffer zone, said Faught. Whenever the main fire comes to our containment line, it'll hit the fuel that's already been burned prior to hitting our main containment line which is the roads. On Sunday, park rangers escorted campers out of the Chilhowee Recreation area. Information officer Nina Barrow said the area will be off limits until the fire is brought under control. Barrow said, Our campground at Chilhowee is closed and our trails in the Chilhowee Recreation Area are also closed so that has been an impact on our recreational visitors. Two days ago, Eric Downen drove up from Jacksonville, Florida to camp and raft the Ocoee River. He chose the Thunder Rock campsite which is a few miles east of the closed Chilhowee campsite. ownen and his son Evan saw the wildfires on the way in. But he was prepared for his trip, I called in advance and was asking about animals and stuff. The people told me that there was wildfires going on and they said they have seen a few more bears and animals running around because of the fire.Faught estimates in the past two weeks, 10 fires have happened inside Cherokee National Forest, with the Powerline Fire being the worst. He added this isn't typical. For this part of the country and this time of the year, we're seeing some pretty extreme fire behavior, you know. Flames lengths anywhere from 3 feet to 10-foot-high, depending on what kind of fuel it's in.Although the fire has shut down the Chilhowee section of Cherokee National Forest, other parts remain open.Whitewater rafting and kayaking aren't affected. Hiking and mountain biking trails at the Ocoee Whitewater Center are also open.

356 Bear Mountain Cottage-Branded
Perched on the western slope of Bear Mountain our cottage, Noah's Lark, provides stunning year 'round views of the Appalachian Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest. The cottage is located in a tri-state area. From the wrap around deck one can see portions of Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina. Noah's Lark is located in North Carolina and is 25 miles west of Murphy NC and 20 miles north of Blue Ridge Georgia.
Over the years whitewater rafters and kayakers have used the cottage as a base of operations because of its proximity to the Ocoee Rivers rapids, site of the 1996 Olympics for whitewater rafting. We have made it a priority to provide a comfortable setting suitable for family vacations, a couple's secluded get away, nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. Unlike many mountain cabins there is ample parking space for cars.

FL Torreya to Ocoee Watershed: 1. Greasy Creek, TN 2015
Clint Bancroft shows Connie Barlow the 9 Florida Torreyas he has planted on his 18 acres in southeastern Tennessee (plus 2 more in pots). At 1,100 ft elevation, and in a mixed deciduous/conifer forest, all the Torreyas look healthy.
In closing, Connie gives Clint 40 seeds from the fall 2014 Torreya Guardians' harvest. Clint demonstrates his rodent-proof outdoor shelter for germinating those seeds.
Note: April 7, 2015, Clint reports in an email, On a sad note I was hiking just five miles from the cabin and found a HUGE hemlock which is heavily invested with adelgids.
