US Navy Drone Crashes Into Chesapeake Bay, Maryland
EASTON, Md., June 12, 2012 — A Navy surveillance drone crashed Monday into the marshes of Bloodsworth Island, just off the coast of the Eastern Shore in Maryland, a summer destination for tourists. No one was reported killed or injured nor was there any significant damage on the ground.
The drones (called by the Navy the Broad Area Maritime Surveillance Demonstrators), which cost nearly $200 million each, are 44 feet long, weigh 10 tons, and have a wing span of 116 feet, allowing them to fly as high as 11 miles and 11,000 miles or more in their search for intelligence information or to take out suspected terrorists.
The big question is what was a drone doing flying above a civilian area? Are there terrorist hanging out on the beaches of Ocean City? Mum was the word from Navy officials who would not comment on whether drones are routinely tested above the Bay or across the nine counties of the Eastern Shore.
This much is known: the unmanned drone crashed about 22 miles east of the Naval Air Station across the Bay on the Paxtuent River from where it took off. The Naval Air Station is 65 miles southeast of Washington, home of the Navy's test pilot school, drone operations and the principal research center for aircraft and support systems.
Add to the mystery the fact that Bloodsworth Island has been off-limits for generations since becoming a U.S. Naval Reservation.
All of which leads to even more questions: Was the drone shot down as practice? That would be expensive target practice. Did it crash accidentally? And how convenient that it just happened to crash on the Navy's own island.
Was it on a mission? And if the latter, what kind of mission in this area?
Is this a new breed of drone that is being tested? If not, then what it is being tested for?
The more questions, the quieter the Navy becomes. The U.S. Coast Guard has now constructed a safety perimeter around the crash site to allow the Navy to fully investigate the crash scene, but local news channels did get footage of the smoldering crash site (see video below).
Bloodsworth Island was first seen by Captain John Smith in 1608 and entered the Robert Bloodsworth family's possession when they bought it in 1799. Slowly the island shrank as the Bay reclaimed chunks of it, but not enough to keep it from being bought up by the Navy in 1948 for target practice. Old tanks were deployed as targets for aircraft strafing with .50-caliber machine guns. Naval ships, largely destroyer class, would come into the Bay and conduct firing exercises.
The Navy has not used the island for bombing and strafing since the mid-nineties, although from time to time officials talk about starting up again, much to the consternation of neighboring islands and watermen.
So the crash of the drone has residents of the Eastern Shore scratching their heads and looking skyward with another question: What's next?

Baltimore is the largest city in the U.S. state of Maryland. Baltimore was established by the Constitution of Maryland and is an independent city that is not part of any county. Baltimore is the largest independent city in the United States.
LOCATION
Baltimore lies in an arm of the Chesapeake Bay, the third largest estuary in the world. The eastern two-thirds of the metropolitan area lie on the Atlantic Coastal Plain, between 15 and 50 feet above sea level, and contain many peninsulas jutting out into the bay. The western third of the city slowly rises into rolling hills, and leads to the piedmont region. It is located about 40 miles from Washington, D.C., and approximately 100 miles from Philadelphia. The Atlantic Ocean lies about 2 hours to the southeast.
HISTORY
European colonization of Maryland began with the arrival of an English ship at St. Clement's Island in the Potomac River.Europeans began to settle the area further north, beginning to populate the area of Baltimore County.
Baltimore has a long and rich history. It is very well-known for being the site of the historic Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. Over the course of the battle, British invaders bombed Fort McHenry with rockets as Francis Scott Key wrote what would become the American national anthem. Baltimore was also the site of the first casualty of the American Civil War.
POPULATION
Baltimore is the 30th-most populous city in the United States. A little under half (47%) of people in Baltimore report affiliating with a religion. Catholicism is the largest religious affiliation.
EDUCATION
Baltimore is also home to Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University, University of Baltimore, Loyola University, Goucher College, and the Notre Dame of Maryland University.
CLIMATE
Baltimore lies within the humid subtropical climate zone. Winters are chilly to mild but variable, with sporadic snowfall: January has a daily average of 2.1 °C though temperatures reach 10 °C rather often and drop below −7 °C when Arctic air masses affect the area. The average seasonal snowfall is 20.1 inches.
Spring and autumn are warm, with spring being the wettest season in terms of the number of precipitation days. Summers are hot and humid with a daily average in July of 27.1 °C, and the combination of heat and humidity leads to rather frequent thunderstorms.
COMMUNICATION
The Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) is located a few miles outside of the city and is accessible by car or light rail. Shuttles connect BWI to an Amtrak train station just off the airport grounds.
There are non-stop flights to BWI from just about every major airport in the country.
Buses are an affordable way to to get in to Baltimore if you are already in the Eastern Seaboard, especially if you are coming from New York or Philadelphia.
ARCHITECTURE
The city is rich in architecturally significant buildings in a variety of styles. Baltimore exhibits examples from each period of architecture over more than two centuries, and work from many famous architects such as Benjamin Latrobe, George A. Frederick, John Russell Pope, Mies van der Rohe and I. M. Pei.
ECONOMY
Baltimore's economy based on steel processing, shipping, auto manufacturing (General Motors Baltimore Assembly), and transportation.
The center of international commerce for the region is the World Trade Center Baltimore. It houses the Maryland Port Administration and U.S. headquarters for major shipping lines.
Baltimore's history and attractions have allowed the city to become a strong tourist destination on the East Coast.
TOURISM
Baltimore is a popular tourist destination in Maryland, in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Today it has become a major center for tourism and travel. Baltimore possesses a vibrant arts scene with the largest free arts festival in the US occurring annually in July.

Maryland, specifically the Chesapeake Bay region, is one of our all time favorite locations to explore in the United States. The wildlife is abundant, and the region is home to some incredible and iconic species brought together by a very important habitat. With limited time to explore the area this summer, we decided to present ourselves a challenge: to find as many species as possible in just 24 hours of searching! How many did we find? From the Field: Eradicating nutria from Chesapeake Bay marshes
A team of wildlife professionals is on a mission to eradicate the destructive, invasive rodent nutria from the Chesapeake Bay's marshes. Steve Kendrot, wildlife biologist with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), leads us on a journey through an Eastern Shore marsh to find signs of nutria, and explains why it's so important for local landowners to support the eradication project.
