Cycle Maryland
Governor O'Malley, joined by Queen Anne's County Commission President Steven J. Arentz, Bike Maryland Executive Director Carol Silldorff, members of Maryland's cycling community, and others, officially kicked-off the Cycle Maryland initiative at the Chesapeake Exploration Center in Chester.
I am pleased to announce a new interactive initiative to encourage Marylanders to enjoy cycling, said Governor O'Malley. By getting out and taking a bike ride, we can learn to enjoy more of Maryland's natural treasures, help reduce the impact on the land, improve our fitness and well-being, and enhance our quality of life.
Before biking along the Cross Island Trail, the Governor also announced a new interactive map that allows users to view the many bike trails and routes in Maryland and plan their cycling trips. Cyclists now have one central location to find places to bike using the various layers of the map, including the BLOC rating feature (Bike Level of Comfort) on state-owned roadways, points of interest, and information on the Maryland Trails Plan. Additionally, there will be an online survey of Maryland's biking community to improve upon the existing map to make it more user-friendly for cyclists.
The selected events for 'Cycle Maryland' showcase Maryland's cycling diversity, says Margot Amelia, Executive Director of the Maryland Office of Tourism. From family-friendly recreational rides on newly opened rail trails to highly competitive long-distance road races, these routes take visitors on an up-close and personal journey through some of the most scenic landscapes in Maryland.
Bike Maryland Executive Director Carol Silldorff joined the Governor in supporting biking in Maryland.
We promote bicycling because planning and public health research all indicate that the best places to bike are the best places to live, said Silldorff. We know that bike friendly places allow people of all ages, races and economic backgrounds to enjoy healthy recreational opportunities and to travel via bicycle to and from destinations in their communities.
All Marylanders are encouraged to attend other Cycle Maryland events now through October 9, 2011. At today's event, the Governor announced a contest sponsored by the Maryland Office of Tourism and the Maryland State Highway Administration that invites participants to post pictures of themselves at events on Facebook to be eligible for a $250 VISA gift card. Prize winners will be randomly drawn from all eligible entries. The winners will be notified on or about October 31.
Cycle Maryland also involves a social media campaign. Connect with us on Facebook and follow CycleMaryland on Twitter and use hashtag #CycleMD to join the conversation.

Point of View: Oysterman Scott Budden on Exelon's Pending 46 Year Lease to Run Conowingo Dam
While Scott Budden and his company, Orchard Point Oyster Company, might be the face of a new generation of oystermen on the Chesapeake Bay, his concerns about the Conowingo Dam, its owner, the Exelon Corporation, and their pending approval for a 46 year old lease to operate it, has a very familiar ring to it. Just like other oystermen working in the north part of the Bay for many years, Scott believes the company needs to listen more and proactively coordinate with oyster producers when, and how much, sediment is released into the Bay from the Dam and the Susquehanna River.
In short, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission plans to renew Exelon's operating lease for almost half a century this year. As part of that permitting, the energy corporation must obtain the approval of is required to obtain a Clean Water Act certification from the Maryland Department of the Environment for the continued operation of the facility and the state has encouraged public comments on this long-term arrangement until January 15.
And Scott has quite a few comments.
In his Spy interview last week, Scott talks about the negative impact of Exelon's current practice of releasing the dam's waters to generate power, regardless of the sediment impact on Bay's oyster beds. He also talks about the need for more significant partnerships between Exelon and the aquaculture industry to ensure the minimum amount of damage to the Bay and its essential oyster industry.

Maryland (US: (listen) MERR-əl-ənd) is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, bordering Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware to its east. The state's largest city is Baltimore, and its capital is Annapolis. Among its occasional nicknames are Old Line State, the Free State, and the Chesapeake Bay State. It is named after the English queen Henrietta Maria, known in England as Queen Mary.Sixteen of Maryland's twenty-three counties border the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay estuary and its many tributaries, which combined total more than 4,000 miles of shoreline. Although one of the smallest states in the U.S., it features a variety of climates and typographical features that have earned it the moniker of America in Miniature. In a similar vein, Maryland's geography, culture, and history combines elements of the Mid-Atlantic, Northeastern, and South Atlantic regions of the country.
One of the original Thirteen Colonies of Great Britain, Maryland was founded by George Calvert, a Catholic convert who sought to provide a religious haven for Catholics persecuted in England. In 1632, Charles I of England granted Calvert a colonial charter, naming the colony after his wife, Queen Mary. Unlike the Pilgrims and Puritans, who enforced religious conformity in their settlements, Calvert envisioned a colony where people of different religious sects would coexist under the principle of toleration. Accordingly, in 1649 the Maryland General Assembly passed an Act Concerning Religion, which enshrined this principle by penalizing anyone who reproached a fellow Marylander based on religious affiliation. Nevertheless, religious strife was common in the early years, and Catholics remained a minority, albeit in greater numbers than in any other English colony.
Maryland's early settlements and population centers clustered around rivers and other waterways that empty into the Chesapeake Bay. Its economy was heavily plantation based, centered mostly on the cultivation of tobacco. The need for cheap labor led to a rapid expansion of indentured servants, penal labor, and African slaves. Kayaking Catoctin Creek at 2.4ft.
Kayaking Catoctin Creek: 2.4ft
Level: 2.4ft
Gauge: USGS 01637500 (Catoctin Creek Near Middletown, MD)
Location: Jefferson, Maryland
Date: March 31, 2018
Distance: 10.94 Miles
We finally were able to catch a ride at above 2.0ft, and what a difference the .40ft made. This video includes some of the sections of class I and II fun, which hopefully offers some guidance on showing the locations of where larger rapids would be found at higher levels (3.0+) and how they look at the moderate level of 2.4ft. These are just a few of the clips, from starting in Jefferson, MD, and ending at Catoctin Creek's confluence with the Potomac River. Please keep in mind - due to its seclusion and pristine conditions, it is important to protect this creek and its plethora of inhabitants, both from pollution and habitat disruption (from too much invasive human activity).
This level would be ideal for someone who is newer to kayaking and for anyone who would like to know what this section is like without any scraping, a relatively constant flow, and before kayaking it for one's first time at higher/swifter levels.
There are some expectedly and surprisingly nice sized rapids (II) at 3.5ft+ at the Mink Hollow area of Catoctin Creek Park & Nature Center.
Rapid just past Catoctin Pottery (1:28)
Point of Rocks Road (MD 464) Bridge Rapid (2:40)
It should be noted that around 200 meters down from Poffenberger Road there is a large rock outcropping that overhangs a very deep portion of the creek (the shoreline resembles a beach, right off of the road), of which is a serious strainer hazard at moderate and high levels. It is safest to avoid getting very close to the outcropping, and may not have a hazardous appearance at levels of under two feet (but also may still pose a threat).

Although a slave state, Maryland remained in the Union during the U.S. Civil War, its strategic location giving it a significant role in the conflict. After the war, Maryland took part in the Industrial Revolution, driven by its seaports, railroad networks, and mass immigration from Europe. Since the Second World War, the state's population has grown rapidly, to approximately six million residents, and it is among the most densely populated states in the nation. As of 2015, Maryland had the highest median household income of any state, owing in large part to its close proximity to Washington, D.C. and a highly diversified economy spanning manufacturing, services, higher education, and biotechnology. Maryland has been ranked as one of the best governed states in the country.
In 1760, Maryland's current boundaries took form following the settlement of a long-running border dispute with Pennsylvania. Maryland was an active participant in the events leading up to the American Revolution, and by 1776 its delegates signed the Declaration of Independence. Many of its citizens subsequently played key political and military roles in the war. In 1790, the state ceded land for the establishment of the U.S. capital of Washington, D.C.
The state's central role in American history is reflected by its hosting of some of the highest numbers of historic landmarks per capita.

The Phosphorous Dialogues: Alan Girard and Chesapeake Bay Foundation
It would be easy to assume that Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Eastern Shore Director, Alan Girard, would a messenger of doom now that Maryland has elected a Republican governor. Frank Hogan, committed to fighting burdensome environmental regulations, such as the state's phosphorous management tool, has just been inaugurated. In fact, within hours of Governor Hogan's decision to place a hold on implementing the PMT, the Foundation was the first conservation organization to publicly condemn the policy shift.
And yet, Girard, someone that has spent most of his career working on Chesapeake Bay issues, insists in his interview with the Spy that he has never been more optimistic about the Bay's future. While he clearly disagrees with Governor Hogan's decision to pull back on critical regulation to protect the Chesapeake, he notes that more people are paying to the Bay's health than any other time in the last twenty years.
Girard also talks candidly about the motives behind CBF's commitment to strong regulatory response to improve the Bay's water quality. He also makes clear his organization's interest in free-market solutions such as nutrient trading.
How zip codes helped organize America
Zip codes, explained.
Subscribe to our channel!
Zip codes were invented in 1963 to help the United States Postal Service deal with huge increases in mail volume. The Zone Improvement Plan, or “ZIP” code system of addressing, organized mail delivery by dividing the country into 10 regions and assigning five digits increasing in specificity: from region to large sorting centers to smaller post offices. To promote the new system, the USPS released publicity materials featuring Mr. Zip, a cartoon character, and a song about zip codes from a band called The Swingin’ Six.
As the nation grew, the USPS updated zip codes by adding a four-digit suffix in 1983. The new suffix corresponds to specific destinations, such as one side of a street or a certain floor of an office building. Now, geocoding technology has created the possibility of even more specific addressing.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:

SUMMARY
=======
American cuisine reflects the history of the United States, blending the culinary contributions of various groups of people from around the world, including indigenous American Indians, African Americans, Asians, Europeans, Pacific Islanders, and South Americans. Early Native Americans utilized a number of cooking methods in early American Cuisine that have been blended with early European cooking methods to form the basis of American cuisine. The European settlement of the Americas yielded the introduction of a number of various ingredients, spices, herbs, and cooking styles to the latter. The various styles continued expanding well into the 19th and 20th centuries, proportional to the influx of immigrants from many different nations; this influx nurtured a rich diversity in food preparation throughout the country.
When the colonists came to the colonies, they farmed animals for clothing and meat in a similar fashion to what they had done in Europe. They had cuisine similar to their previous Dutch and British cuisines. The American colonial diet varied depending on the settled region in which someone lived. Commonly hunted game included deer, bear, buffalo, and wild turkey. A number of fats and oils made from animals served to cook much of the colonial foods. Prior to the Revolution, New Englanders consumed large quantities of rum and beer, as maritime trade provided them relatively easy access to the goods needed to produce these items: rum was the distilled spirit of choice, as the main ingredient, molasses, was readily available from trade with the West Indies. In comparison to the northern colonies, the southern colonies were quite diverse in their agricultural diet.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Americans developed many new foods. During the Progressive Era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, c. 1890s–1920s, food production and presentation became more industrialized. One characteristic of American cooking is the fusion of multiple ethnic or regional approaches into completely new cooking styles. A wave of celebrity chefs began with Julia Child and Graham Kerr in the 1970s, with many more following after the rise of cable channels, such as the Food Network and Cooking Channel, in the late 20th century.

The Low Hanging Fruit of Being a Bike Friendly Community with Salisbury Mayor Jake Day
The way the current mayor of Salisbury, Jake Day, tells it, the small city's move to qualify as a Bike Friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) was a total no-brainer.
While reviewing the city's master plan for transportation, Jake, and other Salisbury leaders realized that with only minor improvements to their streets and sidewalks, they could qualify under LAB guidelines at the bronze level by simply applying. They agreed to do that quickly, and last year, the city of Salisbury joined just handful of towns and cities in Maryland that are officially known for being bike friendly.
It is fair to ask, what, if anything, a town gains by seeking out this designation? And Mayor Day has some interesting and hopefully encouraging words for other communities looking at this kind of strategy. In his Spy interview, Jake outlines the history and benefits of being bike friendly for pennies on the dollar.
