Chesil Beach in Dorset Weymouth England
Chesil Beach sometimes called Chesil Bank, in Dorset, southern England is one of three major shingle structures in Britain.[2] Its name is derived from the Old English ceosel or cisel, meaning gravel or shingle.
The beach is often identified as a tombolo, although research into the geomorphology of the area has revealed that it is in fact a barrier beach which has rolled landwards, joining the mainland with the Isle of Portland and giving the appearance of a tombolo.[3] The shingle beach is 29 kilometres (18 mi) long, 200 metres (660 ft) wide and 15 metres (50 ft) high. The beach and The Fleet, a shallow tidal lagoon,[4] are part of the Jurassic Coast and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The beach curves sharply at the eastern end, near the village of Chiswell, and forms Chesil Cove against the cliffs of the Isle of Portland, and this protects the low-lying village from flooding. It has been the scene of many shipwrecks and was named Dead Man's Bay by Thomas Hardy. Westwards the shingle forms a straight line along the coast, enclosing The Fleet. The beach provides shelter from the prevailing winds and waves for the town of Weymouth, Dorset and the village of Chiswell on Portland.
Simon Jenkins rates the view of Chesil Beach from Abbotsbury along the coast to Portland Bill as one of the top ten in England[5].

Chesil Beach or Bank, Portland Bill, Dorset
Views of Chesil Bank from Portland Bill with 18 miles to its end at Chiswell. It has a height of around 50 feet and it is as wide as 660 feet in places. The shingle is the habitat for rare but locally common plants such as Sea Kale. Gabions seem to have been inserted at points where stabilisation is important.

Portland Harbour is located beside the Isle of Portland, Dorset, on the south coast of England. When completed in 1872, its 520-hectare (1,300-acre) surface area made it the largest man made harbour in the world, and it is the third largest as of 2016 - Excerpt from
Portland is thought of as an island although this isn’t wholly correct in the true sense of the word as it’s reached over a causeway from Chesil Beach. Just 4 miles long by a mile and a half wide at its broadest point, this plate of Jurassic limestone is tilted from north to south. This means that if you are on the elevated northern side of the island you are rewarded with stunning views across the Chesil, Portland Harbour & Weymouth. - Excerpt from
