Canyonlands National Park Needles District Utah Hiking and Free Van Life Camping
Canyonlands National Park has some stunning landscape and lots of amazing hikes awaiting to be explored! We decided to visit the Needles District and found vanlife to be easy and fun around this area with plenty of free camping along UT 211 which leads to the Needles District entrance.
Monticello is the closest town to the Needles District and is about an hours drive from the National Park entrance. We found Gas stations, stores and several campgrounds in Monticello that offered hot showers for $5. There is also a privately owned Campground called Needles Outpost and Campground just 1,5 miles from the National Park entrance that offers campsites, $5 showers, a small general store with basic food items, toiletries etc and a Gas station:
Check campendium.com, overlander.com and freecampsites.net for some great suggestions on free campsites in this area for your van life, RV or camping adventure! However, during the warmer months, a lot of these sites are already taken, especially later in the day. We actually found our spot just by driving along UT 211 while looking for options. These are the GPS coordinates for the boondocking spot in this video where we stayed at: 37°59'33.7N 109°29'10.6W
After a quiet night, we made our way into the Needles District and went for a fun hike on the Chesler Park Loop Trail, a 10,5 mile hike into the incredibly stunning landscape of the Needles:

Confluence Overlook, Needles District, Canyonlands National Park - Utah
The Confluence Overlook Trail crosses Big Spring Canyon and miles of open desert to spectacular views of the Colorado River and Green River confluence. The two rivers define Canyonlands National Park's three districts (Needles, Island in the Sky, and the Maze) and each are visible from the overlook.

2019 Road Trip | Part 10 | Canyonlands (Island in the Sky)
Canyonlands (Island in the Sky) is a short ride, so I actually went to Dead Horse State Park (If I remember correctly it was 10 or 12 dollars for the entrance fee) and even had time to visit Arches National Park, all on the same day. Canyonlands Needle District is the southern section and is about an hour drive from Island in the Sky, I visited this part the next day.
Hiking in Needles
Video of me hiking in the Needles section of Canyonlands, Utah, in Oct. 2009. Lots of scenery, hiking on slickrock, and a few extras thrown in.

Check out the gorgeous drive into the Canyonlands Needles District here
After a long drive from Flagstaff, Arizona, we ended day 7 of our road trip around the southwest with a stop at Big Spring Canyon Overlook in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. This was the first stop of our 36 hours in Moab, Utah.
While The Needles District of the park only draws about 20% of the total park visitors, it was our favorite of the two districts we visited while in town (the other being Island in the Sky).

Road Trip@The Neeles; Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah is known for its dramatic desert landscape carved by the Colorado River. Island in the Sky is a huge, flat-topped mesa with panoramic overlooks. Other notable areas include the towering rock pinnacles known as the Needles, the remote canyons of the Maze and the Native American rock paintings in Horseshoe Canyon. Whitewater rapids flow through Cataract Canyon.
Address: Utah
Area: 527 mi²
Established: September 12, 1964
Phone: (435) 719-2313
Management: National Park Service
The Needles forms the southeast corner of Canyonlands and was named for the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa Sandstone that dominate the area. Hiking trails offer many opportunities for long day hikes and overnight trips. Foot trails and four-wheel-drive roads lead to such features as Tower Ruin, Confluence Overlook, Elephant Hill, the Joint Trail, and Chesler Park.
Location
On US 191, drive 40 miles (60 km) south of Moab or 14 miles (22 km) north of Monticello, then take UT 211 roughly 35 miles (56 km) west. UT 211 ends in The Needles, and is the only paved road leading in and out of the area.
We strongly recommend using a map to reach The Needles. GPS units frequently lead people astray.(

Newspaper Rock Canyonlands, Utah
Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument is a Utah state monument featuring a rock panel carved with one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs. It is located in San Juan County, Utah, along Utah State Route 211, 28 miles (45 km) northwest of Monticello and 53 miles (85 km) south of Moab.
It is along the relatively well-traveled access road into the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park, 12 miles (19 km) from US 191 and 30 miles (48 km) from the park boundary. The 200-square-foot (19 m2) rock is a part of the vertical Wingate sandstone cliffs that enclose the upper end of Indian Creek Canyon, and is covered by hundreds of petroglyph—one of the largest, best preserved and easily accessed groups in the Southwest. The petroglyphs feature a mixture of human, animal, material and abstract forms.
Newspaper Rock was designated a State Historical Monument in 1961, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places listings in San Juan County, Utah as Indian Creek State Park in 1976.
