Biking Sentinel Point in Narrows, Virginia
Mill Creek Nature Park in Narrows, Virginia
This small (140+) acre park is adjacent to the Jefferson National Forest and located on Wolf Creek and Pearis Mountains just outside of the town of Narrows, in Virginia's New River Valley. The park contains a reservoir and several really nice waterfalls on Mill Creek. Check out my Falls of Mill Creek video. In this episode, I start from what the park refers to as the alternate entrance. I begin at the Long Shot trail head and bike along the eastern slopes of Wolf Creek Mountain, connecting with the Grassy Road Trail for the challenging, steep climb up the power line to Sentinel Point. The true Sentinel Point is a series of rocky outcroppings along the western rim of the mountain. Reaching the rocks requires some minor bushwhacking. I did not attempt to reach the rocks due to incoming thunderstorms, I decided to simply enjoy the view from the power line and then retrace my route back down the mountain. There are nice views of Wolf Creek Valley, Narrows, the New River, Peters Mountain, East River Mountain, and into West Virginia. Sentinel Point gets its name from its use as a sentry look out position during the American Civil War.

Brushy Hill Preserve trail running
Location: Lexington, Virginia
Living in Virginia: Slow Train
This special explores the relationship between the railroad and residents of the Shenandoah Valley in the twentieth century, with a few flashbacks to the nineteenth century. Residents and railroad employees describe their deep connection with and daily dependence upon the railroad as it connected mountain communities to the Shenandoah Valley. For the rural resident, the railroad became a friend that brought communication, commerce and transportation. Personal experiences, archival documents, film and video, slides, photographs, posters, and artifacts chronicle the history of railroad development in Winchester, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Charlottesville, Lexington, Clifton Forge, Elkton, Luray and Swoope.
Mill Creek Falls: Hidden Gem of Giles County, Virginia
Mill Creek is a tumultuous stream that flows off Pearis Mountain and into a steep sided and narrow gorge between Pearis Mountain and Wolf Creek Mountain and eventually flows into the New River at the Town of Narrows, in Giles County, Virginia. Smell N Roses made a visit to the gorge to check out the creek and its many waterfalls and cascades. This is a little known trail system. There are miles and miles of hiking trails with great adventure opportunities. Thanks for watching!

Parking and bike trail access are available in each of the communities listed above. It is handicapped accessible and bike rentals are available on the trail. For more information, call the Gorman Nature Center at 419-884-3764.
Come bike or hike the historic
Richland B & O Trail, part of the

1983 funded by the US Congress'
National Trails System Act.
When CSX (formerly Chessie/ B&O)
abandoned this track in 1986 the
Richland County Park District
obtained the way-of-way.

Biking Abandoned PA Turnpike
In late July, 2019, I traveled to Breezewood, Pennsylvania, to bike a stretch of the abandoned PA Turnpike. In 1968, the PA Turnpike was re-routed, and a 13 mile section of the highway was left completely abandoned, including two tunnels. Today, the abandoned highway is technically closed to the public, but the area is signed Enter at your own risk. The post-apocalyptic feel of the abandoned road makes for a very interesting visit. See link below for more detailed information. Thanks for watching!
