CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY- DUBLIN
This is The Chester Beatty Library established in Dublin, Ireland in 1950, to house the collections of mining magnate, Sir Alfred Chester Beatty. Legendary historian and scholar Pat Liddy exlains all about it to us and the video has been shot from the outside since photography is not permitted inside the library. It is also said to have the only copy of the original 'Akbar Namah' of the Mughal emperor Akbar.

THROUGH THE LENS OF THE COLLECTIONS:
CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY AND IRELAND 2016
Fionnuala Croke, Director, Chester Beatty Library
In 2016, as we commemorate the centenary of one of the defining events in the creation of the State, it is apposite to consider the contrast in the make-up of Irish society then and now; the consequences for our national identity; and what contribution our national museums should be making in this regard.
The Chester Beatty Library plays a distinct and unique role among Ireland’s national cultural institutions. While it does not hold ‘Irish’ material, the Library’s displays and activities reflect – and promote – the growing multicultural nature of Irish society. As an arena for creativity and discourse, the Chester Beatty provides the opportunity for shared emotional experiences; and consciously uses its rich collections from countries across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe to make cultural and societal links between diverse communities. In this way, the Library has become a trusted gathering space for the newer members of Irish society and it leads the field in intercultural dialogue and learning. How does this mission contribute to the re-definition of Irish identity in 2016?

Chester Beatty Papyri and CSNTM
The Chester Beatty papyri, published in the 1930s and 1950s, are some of the oldest and most important biblical manuscripts known to exist. Housed at the Chester Beatty Library (CBL) in Dublin, they have attracted countless visitors every year. It is safe to say that the only Greek biblical manuscripts that might receive more visitors are Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Alexandrinus, both on display at the British Library.
The Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts (CSNTM) is pleased to announce that a six-person team, in a four-week expedition during July--August 2013, digitized all the Greek biblical papyri at the Chester Beatty Library. The CBL has granted permission to CSNTM to post the images on their website csntm.org.
The New Testament papyri at the CBL include the oldest manuscript of Paul's letters (dated c. 200 AD), the oldest manuscript of Mark's Gospel and portions of the other Gospels and Acts (third century), and the oldest manuscript of Revelation (third century). One or two of the Old Testament papyri are as old as the second century AD.
Using state-of-the-art digital equipment, CSNTM photographed each manuscript against white and black backgrounds. The result was stunning. Each image is over 120 megabytes. The photographs reveal some text that has not been seen before.

According to Wikipedia...
Dublin Castle (Irish: Caisleán Bhaile Átha Cliath) off Dame Street, Dublin, Ireland, was until 1922 the seat of British rule in Ireland, and is now a major Irish government complex. Most of it dates from the 18th century, though a castle has stood on the site since the days of King John, the first Lord of Ireland. The Castle served as the seat of English, then later British government of Ireland under the Lordship of Ireland (1171--1541), the Kingdom of Ireland (1541--1800), and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (1800--1922). After the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in December 1921, the complex was ceremonially handed over to the newly formed Provisional Government led by Michael Collins.
Since its foundation in 1204 Dublin Castle has been at the heart of the history and evolution of the city. Today, spanning an area of over 44,000 square meters (11 acres), the site contains 2 museums, 2 cafés, an international conference centre, 2 gardens, Government Buildings and the State Apartments which are the most important state rooms in the country.
The grounds of the site are free to explore, as is the Chapel Royal, the Chester Beatty Library, the Garda Museum and the Revenue Museum. Access to the State Apartments is by guided tour only and tickets may be purchased from the Apartments in the Upper Castle Yard.
