Chesterfield Gorge Adventure
Due to an upload issue here is the new upload of the video to Chesterfield Gorge
Welcome to Chesterfield, MA today we are hiking around the Chesterfield Gorge. This place is truly one of kind. You’ll able to enjoy the natural formations dating back half billion years ago when ancients rocks were emerging from the seabed then overtime through a process of glaciation 1000 of years ago from the roaring meltwater helped shape what you see today.
This stretch of of the Westfield river will allow you to enjoy walking, biking, fishing, and photography. The dramatic rock canyon that you see is 70 feet high carved by centuries of rushing water from the East Branch of the Westfield River. All of the hikes are easy What can I do here?
Looking at the map there is a half mile trail that leads you to the cliff tops where you can view the gorge, the river, and all of surrounding trees and plants. Some of the trees you’ll find are hemlock, Oak, and ash. The reservation is also home to bears, bobcats, and wild turkeys. Where do I park? Parking is available on site off of River Road also known as East Branch trail.
The area is popular for day hikes and mountain biking. Another longer trail will lead you beyond Bliss State Forest where you’ll encounter the broad basin near and above the Knightsville Dam a massive flood control project managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The reservation is open from April 1 to December 1 daily 8 Am to Sunset. Onsite facilities include restrooms (Seasonal) and Picnic tables.

Chesterfield Gorge Hike
Last weekend we went hiking at Chesterfield Gorge and at a waterfall that was near by. The water was really low; so much in fact, the rocks we were able to walk on are generally under water.

This is the old patch place built between 1790 & 1810 here in Fitzwilliam New Hampshire. Many people ask what did the houses look like that sat on top of the cellar hole foundations that we explore and metal detect in these videos. Well today we are going to visit one and take a good look around the layout of the homesite. The donated land is called was remodeled by the AMC as a clubhouse but has since 1946 come under the protection of the N.H. Division of Parks and Recreation. The Old Patch Place cottage near the park entrance was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
Taking a walk around the property we will see the typical layout of a colonial farm with small garden, barn, well and pastures. The cellar hole under this house appears to be rock lined with split granite on top and the standard L shape with a center chimney stack.
I hope you enjoy this visit to one of New Hampshires awesome state parks and the video log I have put together . All filmed on the Canon 80D DSLR and iPhone XS.
