Wooler Walks via Hart Heugh, Cheviot Hills Walks, Northumberland National Park Walks, England, UK
Wooler Walks via Hart Heugh, Cheviot Hills Walks, Northumberland National Park Walks, England, UK
Wooler Walks via Hart Heugh was about 6.75 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of hill, woodland and field paths and tracks plus road sections. The walking included some easy level ground but was mostly gradual undulating ground with three moderate ascents and descents. Route finding was generally easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. However, due to the many twists and turns along the route, map-reading skills would be advisable. There were 9 stiles to negotiate.

Places to see in ( Wooler - UK )
Places to see in ( Wooler - UK )
Wooler is a small town in Northumberland, England. It lies on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, near the Cheviot Hills. It is a popular base for walkers and is referred to as the Gateway to the Cheviots. As well as many shops and pubs, the town has a youth hostel, many hotels, and campsites. It lies on the St. Cuthbert's Way long-distance footpath between Melrose Abbey and Lindisfarne.
The main A697 links the town with Morpeth and Coldstream on the Scottish Border. Wooler has two schools; Wooler First School (including Little Acorns Nursery) and Glendale Community Middle School. The schools and nursery share a single campus on Brewery Road (from September 2015) providing education for children in the Glendale area from 2 years old to 13 years old. Close by is Yeavering Bell, crowned by a large iron-age fort, a stronghold of the Votadini.
Wooler was not recorded in the Domesday Book, because when the book was written in 1086, northern Northumbria was not under Norman control. However, by 1107, at the time of the creation of the 1st Baron of Wooler, the settlement was described as situated in an ill-cultivated country under the influence of vast mountains, from whence it is subject to impetuous rains. Wooler subsequently enjoyed a period of prosperity and with its expansion it was granted a licence in 1199 to hold a market every Thursday. The St. Mary Magdalene Hospital was established around 1288.
Wooler is close to Humbleton Hill the site of a severe Scottish defeat at the hands of Harry Hotspur in 1402. This battle is referred to at the beginning of William Shakespeare's play Henry IV, Part 1 – of which Hotspur is the dashing hero.
Wooler also used to have a drill hall that was the local picture house which children were evacuated to in World War II. There also used to be a fountain situated at the top of Church Street in the town. There are three churches in the town, all of which are Grade II listed buildings. The Anglican St Mary's dates from 1765 but has had church on the site for 700 years, the Catholic St Ninian's dates from 1856 while the United Reformed Church in Cheviot Street dates from 1778.
Alexander Dalziel of Wooler (1781–1832) was the father of the celebrated Dalziel Brothers. Seven of his eight sons were artists, and became celebrated engravers in London. Their sister Margaret was also an engraver. Between 1887 and 1965 the town was served by Wooler railway station on the Alnwick to Cornhill Branch.
( Wooler - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Wooler . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Wooler - UK

Newton Tors, a Cheviots Walk
Video of my walk from Hethpool in the northern Cheviots over the multi-topped Newton Tors and on to Coldburn Hill before returning along the College Valley. The occasional shaking is due to the very strong winds I encountered. Music is the 2nd variation from 'Vathek' by Freitas Branco.

Town Talks: The Cheviot Centre
The winner of the 2012 Action for Market Towns Awards is the Cheviot Centre in Wooler. When the local authority needed to make cuts Wooler's library and tourist information centre - serving an area of 250 square miles - was at risk of closure. But Glendale Gateway Trust wasn't going to let that happen. This is what they did.

Walkin' the northern Cheviot Hills [Sept. 11, 2015]
Last foray of the Dutchman into the hills of the UK for this year: the northern Cheviot Hills, a few miles east of Wooler - in Northumberland. Part of the route was 'cross country' on GPS & map. Had a good look at Yeavering Bell & it's fort of the Iron age, and hiked a part of St. Cuthbert's Way too. Good views but quite windy up there!
As usual, some route information added.
The music is from Jackie Mittoo: 'Reggae Rock' & 'Darker Shade Of Black'.

The Cheviot - (8 mile route) - iWalkOutdoors
This is a video of my walk up The Cheviot in the summer of 2018.
The Cheviot is 2,674 feet high (815m) and is situated in Northumberland in the north of England, only a few miles from the England / Scotland border.
I parked my car at a small car parking area near Harthope Burn and started heading up to The Cheviot following the path before I reached Langleeford. The route up was good. I got some great views, and although fairly steep in places, the walking was good going (it can get muddy/boggy so be warned). The route down to Scotsman's Knowe was steep, and the route through the Harthope valley was hard going (boggy, trip hazards, overgrown vegetation), however it was great to see and stop at Harthope Linn waterfall.
Thanks for watching the video.
