STREET ART & CHEW JETTY - GEORGETOWN, PENANG | Malaysia Travel Vlog 088, 2017
Coming to Malaysia we didnt expect Penang Street Art to be the coolest street art we've ever seen, right here in Georgetown! Chew Jetty was also on todays list - we share them both in this vlog. ⬇ Click 'Show More' to expand ⬇
Georgetown is such a cool spot, the street art is all pretty close in a bunch but can be found all round the streets of Penang as well as in some of the Art Gallery spots. This vlog was filmed early November 2017, just before the storms hit :(
If you're also spending some of your Malaysia trip down in Penang be sure to check out Chew Jetty - it's a little touristy but worth having a look around. Chew Jetty is probably one of the most popular spots to visit, but you can also go a bit further down and see Tan Jetty which is much less busy.
All in all, if you visit Penang be sure to check out the street art and Chew Jetty.

CHEW JETTY TOUR - PENANG 2019 | BEAUTIFUL WATERFRONT VIEW, GEORGETOWN
In the morning we grabbed a bite to eat and walked through the Chinese Clan, Chew Jetty in Georgetown, Penang. Located in the Penang Heritage Trail Zone, tourists can walk along the wooden boardwalk by houses standing on stilts. Along the way there is an abundance of souvenir stands and local snacks available. Reach the end of the Chew Jetty to gain a spectacular view of the Penang seafront, right by a temple.
This was not the main attraction of the day but it was still a nice free little side stop along the way.

TRAVEL GUIDE:
- CHEW JETTY
It's definitely a must-place to visit when you are in Penang! Lots of great places to take good pictures or simply sit there to enjoy the view.
- TAN JETTY
10 minutes away by foot from the famous Chew Jetty, this place is pretty secluded, not many people visit this area but the view is breath-taking, nevertheless.
- PIK NIK
You guys should definitely try out their mac and cheese! Best to go in group and they open until 12am too!
- DARK MANSION MUSEUM
Not that recommended, honestly saying. Inside is a bunch of glowy arts and places to take pictures, and that’s all. There will be a guide to help you take the photo though!
- NORM
The waffle is da bomb for a sweet-tooth like me! And the place is super instagrammable as well.
- VIVA LA PASTA
Friendly staffs and quiet environment. Pasta served was delicious with affordable price!

Chew Jetty, in GEORGETOWN, PENANG I MALAYSIA ATTRACTIONS
Having been a home on stilts on the shores for the Chew Clan community more than a century and is still now, the Chew Jetty has withstood the test of time and a strong testament of living heritage for Penang and the world to mesmerize.
Started merely as a wooden passageway and slowly created into a cluster of houses perch above the sea shores by stilts above the never ending shifting tides, this communal site is locked in a time zone by itself, disregarding the urban development that is taking place around it.
Penang being a heritage town is rich with attractive historic sites and cultural events, but this inimitable settlement stands out as a truly unique living heritage. The Chew Jetty is actually a whole settlement of wooden houses built on silts and the name “Chew” is the surname (the first name) of the residences and that’s where the name was derived. Migrant’s families with this surname would live together in this area.
If you're spending some of your Malaysia trip down in Penang be sure to check out Chew Jetty - it's a little touristy but worth having a look around. Chew Jetty is probably one of the most popular spots to visit, but you can also go a bit further down and see Tan Jetty which is much less busy. A Clan Jetty is actually a village built on stilts and these were built by some pioneer Chinese immigrants. Each jetty comprises of row houses on stilts joined by wooden walkways over the water. These ‘water villages’, set up more than a century ago, house the descendants from Fukien Province in China, who shared common historical, geographical and clan origins. They left their motherland in droves as the Manchu rulers of China lost their grip on power, and widespread poverty, famine and hardship became the order of the day. They are the anchor for nearly arrived immigrants who, through kinship ties, were able to find jobs as stevedores and cross -channel ferry boatman in the bustling port of Penang to stake their survival in the new land.
Chew Jetty, Georgetown, Penang Island
Chew Jetty is a floating village by the sea. Located in heart of Georgetown, Penang Island. Amazed to see this unique living quaters because being the city girl myself, houses built on the sea was a rare sight to behold. The houses' foundation are not on stilts but on concrete piles and poles. Motorcycles can come through the nooks and corners too; it was household to families by night but in daytime, home was the office too; where you see home business selling souvenirs & snscks for tourists like me :)
Penang was given a bad limelight due to last month's flood but now, Penang is back to business.
If you plan to visit Chew Jetty soon, don't miss out the one & only dragon boat located right deep end of the village. From the entrance, we saw a Chinese temple but there is another at the end of the village's boardwalk. Over here, you can see the harbour, the Penang Bridge I & Penang Bridge II. The first bridge, Penang Bridge I was built in 1985 & it is 13.5km long. It connects mainland Penang to the island crossing Straits of Penang. The second bridge was built in 2014 measured only an approximately 8km. So to reach Penang Island, it is either by flight ( yes, there is an international airport !) , road (from mainland Malaysia) , ferry ( yes, there are ferry services from mainland Malaysia ) or maybe swim!?
It was a cosy self explore walking tour. The seaview had a calming effect on me. Oh yes, don't forget to stop by Chew Jetty Cafe on your way out for local hawker food fare and try outs. Next video is coming up soon, showcasing Penang's most delicious & cheap eats.

Clan Jetties Stilt Houses of the Penang Heritage Trail located in George Town, Penang, Malaysia
In this travel video we venture off to explore the Clan Jetties Stilt Houses of the Penang Heritage Trail located in historic UNESCO heritage city George Town, Penang, Malaysia. Visiting the stilt villages was something both of us really wanted to do and was one of the top attractions in George Town we wanted to explore. We definitely weren't disappointed as we spent several hours visiting the different Clan Jetties that are distinguished by different names, for example Chew Jetty. As part of the Penang Heritage Trail these jetties are considered one of the last bastions of old Chinese settlement in Penang. The stilt houses reminded us of Kampung Ayer, one of the largest stilt villages in the world, located in Bandar Seri Bagawan, Brunei. While wandering we were greeted by many friendly cats and dogs along the way. Overall, it was a great way for us to spend the late afternoon on a hot and humid day.

Today we are visiting a place that is an important part of George Town's heritage - the Clan Jetties.
These are the last bastions of old Chinese settlements.
One of the things that has surprised me most about visiting the Clan Jetties is that people live here with their pets, so even though their houses are on stilts above the water they still keep dogs, cats and it works.
Here we've found some friendly little doggies. Yes. Leave it to me to find puppies.
Cats. Hello, cat. It is purring. Cat, let's steal you. You can fit in my backpack.
Well, we've encountered a lot of friendly cats and dogs but not this one.
All of the houses in this area are built on stilts over the water and they even have a temple.
Here is the temple of stilts that we were looking to find.
This area is now part of the heritage trail and it was established roughly 150 years ago.
There are several distinct Jetty's along this area. In fact, there were seven at one time. One just burnt down and now we are visiting the Chew Jetty, which is welcoming us.
How are we feeling? I'm feeling good. I'm just resting on someone's porch I imagine.
This stilt villages actually remind me quite a bit of the ones I visited while in Brunei, which are called the Kampong Ayer. Those were even quite a bit bigger. These are still very fascinating.
In the back of one of these jetties there is the most random Santa Clause. In the back.

Chew jetty PENANG malaysia

Chew Jetty 姓周桥 Penang Georgetown visit 2018
Chew Jetty is one of the well-known jetty villages in Georgetown area. This name is no longer foreign and becomes one of the interesting areas to visit. For biking or walking in the Georgetown area, you can keep track of the pier villages themselves.
The jetty is a row of wooden houses on a pole along the pedestrian path built over the water. This jetty has been built by some Chinese migrants pioneers. Clans jetty is a beautiful fishing village lined up along the jetty. Each jetty consists of consecutive houses on a pole accompanied by a wooden walkway on the water or known as water village.
Chew jetty is a tourist attraction as it does not change much and keeps a lot of Penang's early history in terms of culture and community of its residents. The jetty community is increasingly receiving visits from outside tourists due to the uniqueness of the building and its way of life and cultural retention.
The Chew Jetty has its own history. It is among some of the traditional jewels which have been the dock of trading ships around the 1900s still occupied the earliest of the earliest generation of today. The traditional fisherman's settlement dates back to the 19th century, and is a few links remaining in Penang with its rich and colorful past.
This jetty has been built on silt and mud covering the Weld Quay area where it is impossible for bots to land during low tide, During tides, the place looks floating in the water. This is also the first Chinese dragon boat race place in Penang.
