CHIANG DAO CAVES - Not What We Expected!

Today we walked up the street from our accommodation to the Chiang Dao Caves - this is one of the ‘must see’ places when visiting the Chiang Mai / Chiang Dao region.

We love caves and find them fascinating, so we were very excited to see this network of caves. We had read all about them in blogs before going and had very high expectations, but once we were there our feelings about it all changed.

While the setting was lovely and the caves were impressive, we quickly felt sad about how this beautiful location was being managed.

Some information about visiting the Chiang Dao caves:
It cost 40 baht to gain entry to the caves, for this price you can walk in 2 chambers and see the temples. We would advise bringing a high powered torch as the cave ceilings are quite high and the lighting is not adequate or well positioned. You can pay 200 baht per person to go on a 30 minute tour which takes you on a loop through 3 other chambers. This tour is in groups, so pot luck as to how many people go with you. The guide takes a kerosene lamp. We’ve heard that it is not safety regulated in anyway. Old blog posts indicate that you can go through these 3 chambers without a guide if you bring your own torch but that is not the case anymore and they will not allow anyone to go into the caves without a guide.

Chiang Dao, a quiet little picturesque area, with a quaint northern Thailand feel lies above the Menam Ping gorge on the green slopes of Doi Chiang Dao mountain which means City of Stars. True to the name, limestone peaks reaching a height of 2,186 m (7,174 ft) make Chiang Dao an impressive area and abundant with caves to discover containing shrines, statues and Buddha images.

Motorcycle Road Trip In Northern Thailand, Day 1: Exploring Chiang Dao Caves

Today Brock and I headed to the Chiang Rai Loop via motorcycle. We traveled into the Northern area of Thailand around the border of Myanmar and stopped at the Chiang Dao Caves. It is approximately an hour motorcycle ride from Chiang Mai. You can do the ride on scooters but it is much more enjoyable on a full size motorcycle. After the Chiang Dao we headed to the Angkhang Nature Resort for a lovely meal in time to escape a thunderstorm. If you're traveling on a budget Ankhang Nature Resort is an excellent value at approximately $20 a night per person. While it might not be the most budget friendly the accommodations and free breakfast make it a solid value.

Chiang Dao is in the north of Thailand, and is known by it's beautiful mountains, the Wat Tham caves, hot springs, and of course the AMAZING FOOD!!

TRIP TO THE NEST IN CHIANG DAO, THAILAND

We cruise north to the Nest in Chiang Dao, Thailand for a few days of peace and relaxation . After a brief, but beautiful motorbike ride from Chiang Mai to Chiang Dao, we find what we are looking. The Nest 1 offered us seclusion, quiet, and great western food. The next day, after decompressing in a a double bungalow, we step it up and go for a family suite at Nest 2. We are blown away by the surroundings and the amazing (and very spicy) Thai food.

The Chiang Dao cave history is an integral part of the Chiang Dao area, to the Thai people. The caves have been part of Thai folklore for over 1,000 years. With numerous statues and offerings throughout the over 12km of caves in Chiang Dao, this is a long standing place of worship. You will see carvings, statues and chedis within the cave.
