Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall - Taipei, Taiwan

In the middle of Taipei is a mind boggling memorial that’ll make you feel the size of an ant. The democratic nation of Taiwan has a complicated history that continues to shape the action of today. On this episode we’ll take a look at this Taipei’s Enormous Dictator Memorial.
The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall was built in memory of Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China. This landmark, located in the Zhongzheng District of Taipei, Taiwan will leave in you awe as your eyes first take in the sight. The building and ground space this national monument occupies is enormous. Upon entering through the main gate, immediately to your left and right are two massive buildings. The National Theater and National Concert Hall are the huge orange roofed buildings with the memorial hall being the taller white building with a blue roof at the end of a long walkway.
The site sprawls across 59 acres or 240,000 square meters of land. The memorial hall itself is 76 meters or 249 feet tall with that construction starting in 1976 and completing in 1980. The two sets of white stairs leading up to the building’s opening have exactly 89 steps which represent Chiang Kai-shek’s age when he passed. The doors to the memorial hall are outrageous to say the least, these doors are 52 feet or 16 meters tall as weigh as much as 11 african elephants.
Inside the main chamber honour guards stand fixed in position for 1 hour at a time before switching with another guard. A ceremony has the multiple honour guards walking rigidly, spinning their guns among other things as they hand off the position in the hall. There is also a second entrance into the Memorial Hall at ground level that has some of Chiang’s possessions on display like a calligraphy, uniforms and 2 bulletproof cadillacs. I guess that was his car of choice. If that isn’t enough action for you there is a flag lowering ceremony at 5:00pm every day.
While you might think this landmark is in the outskirts of town, it’s actually smack dab right in the middle of town. It’s a relaxing place to get away from the busy streets of Taipei, with that said you won’t be the only one there though, there are plenty of tourists scurrying around.
The park surrounding The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall was renamed in 2007 to Liberty Park in honour of Taiwan's transfer to becoming a democratic nation. Chiang Kai-shek was a leader of the Republic of China and an influential member of the KMT or Kuomintang which makes it so ironic that the main entrance, called Liberty Gate, leads to the communist leader’s memorial. Debate continues off and on whether the dictator’s bronze statue and merchandise sold should be removed from the site and the memorial’s name be changed completely.
If you want to learn more about the Kuomintang I talk more about their actions in Taiwan in one of our other videos “The Most Beautiful Subway Station”. So be sure to check that out.
Whether you care about the history of this place or not, if you are ever in Taipei, you really need to stop off to see this place. The sheer scale of the building is beyond impressive. So along with the long stroll between buildings, ceremonies and selfies, there are immaculate gardens with ponds on either sides of the path. These ponds are home to turtles, carp, frogs and kingfisher. So there is plenty to see here.

Taipei, Taiwan - Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall & Park Full Tour HD (2017)
The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (Chinese: 中正紀念堂) is a national monument, landmark and tourist attraction erected in memory of Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China. It is located in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan.
The monument, surrounded by a park, stands at the east end of Liberty Square. The structure is framed on the north and south by the National Theater and National Concert Hall.
In February 2017 Taiwan's Ministry of Culture announced plans to transform the hall into a national center for “facing history, recognizing agony, and respecting human rights.” A corresponding de-emphasis of the Chiang personality cult is underway as proposals for transforming the hall are reviewed.
The square became Taipei's site of choice for mass gatherings as soon as it opened. The nature of many of those gatherings gave the site new public meanings. The hall and square became the hub of events in the 1980s and early 1990s that ushered Taiwan into its era of modern democracy. Of the many pro-democracy demonstrations that took place at the square, the most influential were the rallies of the Wild Lily student movement of 1990. The movement provided the impetus for the far-reaching political reforms of President Lee Teng-hui. These culminated in the first popular elections of national leaders in 1996.
The site's importance in the development of Taiwan's democracy led to the plaza's dedication as Liberty Square by President Chen Shui-bian in 2007.[2] Memorial Hall was also renamed in a dedication to democracy. The announcement of the new names were greeted with hostility by Kuomintang officials. The original dedication to Chiang was subsequently restored to the hall by President Ma Ying-jeou, while the name Liberty Square was affirmed by officials across political parties.
In 2017, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the February 28 Incident and the 30th anniversary of the lifting of martial law, Taiwan's Ministry of Culture announced plans to transform the hall into a national center for “facing history, recognizing agony, and respecting human rights.” Scholars and experts were invited to form an advisory group to help plan the hall's transformation.
The Chinese inscription now over the main gate declares the plaza Liberty Square. The calligraphic style recalls that of Wang Xizhi in the East Jin Dynasty (see Chinese calligraphy). The style is noted for its sense of vitality, movement and freedom. The characters in the inscription are placed in left-to-right sequence to follow modern practice in Taiwan. The right-to-left order of ancient Chinese tradition had been adopted at the site previously.

EP13 Seeing Taiwan: Shing Hwa Tea Shop, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial, Thermal Valley, Lungshan Temple
When I take out the eating clips I can't believe I manage to fit 5 days of sightseeing into a 9 minute video!
Taipei is definitely more fast paced than Kaohsiung and Tainan in the south. Maybe it's because we were going to tourist places but most of the people we encountered were not from Taiwan and many of the people were not as friendly. The cost of things in Taipei is also slightly higher than the south and everywhere we went was much busier.
The highlight was definitely the 興華名茶 Shing Hwa Tea Shop. The owner took so much time to explain how their teas are grown and the difference between high elevation and low elevation teas.
He explained what is used to grow the tea to make it organic and the differences between a small tea garden and a commercial business tea garden. We learnt so much about how to brew tea and the difference slow grown plants make to the flavour, method and effect of the resulting tea. He made us several teas so we could try tea from different elevations and different plants e.g. oolong, tie guan yin and showed us the traditional tea ceremony. There was no pressure to make a purchase and he was so passionate about his product.
Here is a list of the places we visited:

The Memorial Hall is white with four sides. The roof is blue and octagonal, a shape that picks up the symbolism of the number eight, a number traditionally associated in Asia with abundance and good fortune. Two sets of white stairs, each with 89 steps to represent Chiang's age at the time of his death, lead to the main entrance. The ground level of the memorial houses a library and museum documenting Chiang Kai-shek's life and career and exhibits related to Republic of China-era Chinese history, and Taiwan's history and development. The upper level contains the main hall, in which a large statue of Chiang Kai-shek is located, and where a guard mounting ceremony takes place in regular intervals.
After President Chiang Kai-shek died on 5 April 1975, the Executive branch of the government established a Funeral Committee to build a memorial. The design, by architect Yang Cho-cheng, was chosen in a competition. Yang's design incorporated many elements of traditional Chinese architecturerecalling the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing, China. (The Kuomintang (KMT) revered Dr. Sun as founder of the party and government Chiang had led.) Groundbreaking for the memorial took place on 31 October 1976, the 90th anniversary of Chiang's birth. The hall officially opened on 5 April 1980, the fifth anniversary of the leader's death.
Yang's design placed the main building at the east end of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Park (中正紀念公園), covering over 240,000 square metres in Zhongzheng District. A main gate, the Gate of Great Centrality and Perfect Uprightness (大中至正) was placed at the west end on Chung Shan South Road, with a Gate of Great Loyalty (大忠門) standing at the north side on Hsin Yi (Xinyi) Road and a Gate of Great Piety (大孝門) standing at the south side on Ai Kuo (Aiguo) East Road. A Boulevard of Homage, bordered by manicured bushes, connected the main hall with the square.
