Yi Peng Lantern Festival (ยี่เป็ง โคมลอย เชียงใหม่) in Chiang Mai, Thailand ★ SoloTravelBlog
► Check out the next Buckwild Adventure:
During the 2013 Thai Lantern Festival (Yi Peng / ยี่เป็ง) and Loi Krathong celebrations in Chiang Mai, Thailand (เชียงใหม่), thousands of lanterns (โคมลอย) were released simultaneously. Also known as the festival of lights, Yi Peng is an international event that attracts many foreigners. Yeepeng is a unique celebration created by the Lanna people of Chiang Mai. It occurs around the same time as Loy Krathong every year.

Hey there, are you interested in making your own YouTube videos? If so, here is a list of gear I use to make the videos. If you have any more questions about it, feel free to message me at solotravelblog@gmail.com ;)
CAMERA & AUDIO EQUIPMENT I USE:
Camera: Sony RX100 M3 ►
Voiceover Mic: Samson Go Mic ►
In-Field Mic: Zoom H1 ►
Tripod: Manfrotto Pixi ►
EXPLANATION: I try to keep my equipment as simple as possible. 90% of the time, all I use to film is my Sony RX100 M3, and all I use for audio is my Samson Go Mic (which I use to record voiceovers after filming). Occasionally I use the Zoom H1 for audio if I want to record audio in-field. As for the Pixi tripod, I sometimes use it while filming food, but most of the time I use it to mount my Samson Go Mic on a desk for voiceovers (in conjunction with the other accessories, listed below).
MODULAR COMPONENTS I USE:
Smatree SmaPole S3 (hollow pole only) ►
Joby Action Arm (arm only) ►
Joby Hand Grip (hand grip only) ►
Joby Hub Adapter ►
EXPLANATION: Because I'm often traveling, I prefer to have the lightest, smallest, most versatile components available. Therefore, I use bits and pieces from the above gear sets, and these bits and pieces can be connected together in a huge variety of ways. For example, they can be made into a long selfie stick, they can be mounted to my tripod to make it extra-tall, and they can be used with my tripod and Go Mic to position the microphone directly in front of my face while I'm recording voiceovers at a desk.
MICROPHONE ACCESSORIES I USE:
Foam Mic Cover ►
Pop Filter ►
EXPLANATION: To improve sound quality for voiceovers, I place a mic cover on the Samson Go Mic, then use an elastic band to hang the pop filter on top. This is not the best audio protection available, but it is the most minimalistic and space-efficient gear for traveling. The mic cover can also be used on the rare occasion that I record audio with the Zoom H1.
GEAR I USE FOR CHARGING ON-THE-GO:
Anker Mini PowerBank ►
Silicone Cables ►
Adapter for Micro to Mini ►
Adapter for Micro to Lightning ►
EXPLANATION: Anker's lipstick-sized powerbanks are small yet powerful. I travel with two, so that if one has a low charge, I can charge it in my hotel while I'm out and about with the other powerbank. Using the powerbank in conjunction with the short, durable silicone cables and micro/mini/lightning adapters means I can charge just about any device while on-the-go.

Chiang Mai Sky Lantern Festival
There is a popular festival in late October during which thousands of sky lanterns are released en masse. This is a marvelous spectacle you must attend at least once in your life. The floating lanterns form a captivating nebula of light, gently undulating and drifting across the night’s sky.
This is part of a Kathina festival (gathin กฐิน) used to mark the end of buddhist lent (phansa พรรษา) during which people express gratitude to monks by offering new robes and other donations. This is an opportunity for Buddhists to make merit (tham bun ทำบุญ). After a ceremony, sky lanterns (khom loi โคมลอย) are released into the night's sky. Some people write their names on the lanterns along with wishes and hopes for the coming year.
The event was held on October 25, 2014 and organized by a buddhist group named Lanna Dhutanka. It takes place at a short distance from the Maejo University Campus at Lanna Dhutanka Temple (ธุดงคสถานล้านนา).
This event is often confused with the Loy Krathong (ลอยกระทง) and Yi Peng (ยี่เป็ง) festivals which both take place in early November.
At 8pm, the announcer instructed participants to release the lanterns in three waves. The floating lanterns form a captivating nebula of light, ethereal flames rising into a distant galaxy of shimmering stars. Some lanterns caught fire during flight, resembling shooting stars hurtling across the night’s sky. There was a short fireworks show later on.
While the photos and videos are quite beautiful, they don’t do the experience justice. It truly awe-inspiring to witness in person - you feel the heat of the flames, the eager anticipation and collective awe of the crowd. I would strongly recommend going to the Chiang Mai sky lantern festival at least once in your life.

- Fresh Soya Milk and Pa Tong Go
Soy milk also called soya milk or soybean milk, made from soybeans. A stable emulsion of oil, water, and protein, it is produced by soaking dry soybeans and grinding them with water. Soy milk contains about the same proportion of protein as cow's milk. Thai people usually take Pa Tong Go deep-fried dough stick made from sweet flour. This is one menu for Thai people as a breakfast.

Crossing Mekong River to Laos at Chiang Khong
This one-minute video shows what it's like to cross the Mekong River today as a tourist. Chiang Khong, Thailand, where we crossed, is a few hundred miles up the river from where most of the Hmong would have crossed after the U.S pulled out of Laos in 1975. In a motor-powered long boat, it takes about two minutes to cross the river. Where we crossed the Mekong it is much bigger than Eau Claire's Chippewa River.
