Chiba Castle - 千葉城 : Located a good hour away from Tokyo and in Chiba City, the Chiba Castle or Inohana-jo, was first built in 1126 by Tsuneshige Chiba. He was the first ‘gunji’ administrator of Sōma District, and was then transferred to the same position in Chiba District.
For many centuries, the Chiba family ruled over the area from this castle. Then in 1455, Makuwari Yasutane, a relative of the Chiba family, attacked and defeated them resulting in the castle’s demise. Thanks to his lineage Makuwari Yasutane took over the name of the Chiba family and decided to build his own castle, the Honsakura Castle, in the nearby city of Sakura, leaving the first Chiba family’s castle in ruins.
It was only in 1967, that the City of Chiba decided to give Chiba Castle a second life with a new and modern design. Though it is far removed from what the first castle built in 1126 looked like, it now doubles as the city’s official folk museum

Kururi Castle, Kimitsu, Chiba Prefecture, Japan
Kururi Castle (久留里城) in Kimitsu, Chiba prefecture.
Built in 1540 by Mariya Takeda. It was later captured by Satomi Yoshitaka, who used it as his base of operations against the Hōjō clan who were based in Odawara Castle.
The Hōjō made three failed attempts to take Kururi Castle, until finally in 1564 the Hõjõ, with the help of samurai trained in the methods of shinobijutsu (castle infiltration), seized the castle and the Satomi fled. The Satomi weren’t fazed though and led an all out assault to reclaim the castle just three years later in 1567.
In 1590 Toyotomi Hideyoshi laid siege to the Hõjõ base castle at Odawara defeating the Hõjõ. The Satomi had been asked by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to help in the attack on the Hõjõ, but support from the Satomi clan wasn’t given in time. Toyotomi Hideyoshi subsequently punished them by depriving the Satomi of their entire domain.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s able ally Tokugawa Ieyasu assigned the castle to Matsudaira Tadamasa. A large castle town was established at the base of the mountain within the third bailey of the castle which now encompassed not only the mountain but the entire valley below.
Kururi Castle was later successively ruled by the Osuga, Tsuchiya, and Kuroda clans after the Battle of Sekigahara (1600). In 1679 the daimyõ Tsuchiya Naoki was declared insane, his son was demoted, and the domain was suppressed. The castle was allowed to fall into ruin.
In 1842 the domain was once again revived under Kuroda Naozumi when the shõgun appointed him to the castle with the hope of reinvigorating the peninsula. The Kuroda continued to rule the domain up until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.
In 1872, by order of the new Meiji government, the castle was demolished and the lumber and stone was carried down from the mountain to be used for building public buildings and road works.
Like most Japanese castles today, Kururi Castle’s ruins are now a public park. A new keep was constructed in 1979 in concrete from drawings and diagrams dating from the mid-1500’s. This new concrete keep was built next to the original castle’s base, not on the same site, to preserve the original foundations. The original foundations are situated right next to the new keep and are fenced off. A sign has been erected showing a photo of the original foundation stones.
It is a 600 odd metre walk to the second bailey and then a further 50 metres or so to the main keep. One can see how easy it would have been to defend on all sides as the castle was built to take advantage of the steep terrain. Even today there is only one way to the main keep and that was protected on all sides by steep cliffs topped by a wall.
The keep itself sits atop a narrow mountain top with a small bailey that was walled and had a single simple gate. It commands a grand view of the surrounding area which even today is over 90% heavily forested mountains. Fifty metres down from the main keep the second bailey was much smaller and also encircled by a wall with two simple gates. The Third bailey was actually 800 metres away down in the plains at the base of the mountain. This was similarly walled with two simple gates. There were no moats at this castle.
Of interest are the walls which stand at only 5’2”. This was to enable the castles occupants to lob stones and flaming bails over the walls at attackers.
During the construction of the original castle, legend states that it rained 21 times, or once every three days. For this reason the castle was also given the nickname U Castle (雨) or “rain” Castle.

DYA717 Chiba, Japan Jan 31 to Feb 1, 2016
Jan 31, 2016 -- Got onto the JR train from Narita airport to the Chiba JR station and after stopping at 6 stations, I arrived 45 minutes later. Fare was 670 for the unreserved seats however this being rush hour with students just out of class, I opted to pay 570-yen more for a reserved green car seat. Not bad – around $10.33. I’m in Chiba prefecture where Chiba is the capitol city and where Narita airport is. Checked into the Toyoko Inn (Chiba-eki Higashi-guchi), a 10 minute walk and paid approx $53/night which includes breakfast. I walked around a little bit and found Ton Katsu Wako, a restaurant in basement-2 of the Mistukoshi building near the JR Chiba train station. Great ono kau kau.
February 1, 2016 – after a pretty good breakfast at the Toyoko Inn, I went BURA-BURA. Boy was it cold! I had a jacket with lining and my jeans had flannel lining so I was OK. My fingers was cold but I had to take pictures so I didn’t want to wear gloves. Besides I left my gloves in my suitcase. If I had my gloves, no pictures so I had to sacrifice! Nah, kekekeke, just joking!
Walked until I happened to glimpse the Chiba Shrine up a side-street. My map was one street off. This shrine is for the spirit of the North Star (Polaris). Designated as a must-see-in-Chiba. 10-minute walk from the Chiba station. And then, I went BURA-BURA some more and ended up at the Chiba castle ruins. The original castle was built in 1126 but they had to abandon it because the clan got bust up in some wars. The castle was in ruins for a long time but was re-built in modern times in the same spot but not to the original design. This castle is now a museum. It was closed today so I couldn’t take a look inside.
Caught the Chiba monorail. It is the world’s longest suspended/hanging monorail. Transferred to a JR train and headed out to Makuhari Messe, an area where they have all kinds of events venues. They hold rock concerts, trade fairs, etc. I thought might be interesting but nothing was going on. After looking at more than a dozen eating places, I stopped at the Bar de Espana Gran Via. Nice restaurant and the kau kau was OK. Had the house red Spanish wine which was OK too.
Trained back to Chiba central and went BURA-BURA looking for 100-yen shop and for buckwheat filled neck pillow because someone asked about the pillow. Didn’t find that type of pillow at the 100-yen shop but bought a bunch of things which weren’t on my look-see-shopping list! Found a pillow at the Mitsukoshi dept practically across da street from my hotel -- it was 50 x 35 cm which is about 20 x 14 and it has that dent in the middle. The lady said it is a pillow to support the neck or something li' dat. My understanding of Japanese not that good. Cost of 3240-yen is around $27-US.
For dinner, I went to look for an Okinawan restaurant but it was too early in the evening and it was too cold to wait around. I ended up at Yakitori No Ohgiya restaurant. Was pretty ono dinner.
