Chicago Chinatown: One of the most thriving Asian communities in the US
Chicago's Chinatown, one of the most thriving Asian communities in the United States, is bucking a trend of gentrification and loss of identity. Located a 10--minute drive from downtown, it is home to more than 8,000 people and a bustling business community. As gentrification wipes out Chinatowns across the US, a model for survival is being forged in Chicago. CCTV’s correspondent Roza Kazan has the details.

Chicago Chinatown - Illinois
This is one of my weekend trip to Chicago. Took the BN train from Naperville to Chicago Union station and then the redline train to Cermak station. Most of the images were shot from the Cermak station platform. The video was done at animoto.com (PRO user); music was from the animoto library.

At the heart of Chinatown's lively business district are Cermak Road and Wentworth Avenue. Offerings there include an extensive roster of shops, cafes, dim sum spots and teahouses. Chinatown Square outdoor mall has similar attractions. The Chinese-American Museum has exhibits about the history of the neighborhood. The Nine-Dragon Wall is a reproduction of the 15th-century mural of the same name in Beijing.
The Chinatown neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois, is on the South Side (located in the Armour Square community area), centered on Cermak and Wentworth Avenues, and is an example of an American Chinatown, or ethnic-Chinese neighborhood. By the 2000 Census, Chicago Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area had 68,021 Chinese. The combined 60616 and 60608 zip codes in Chicago, as of the 2010 Census, were home to 22,380 people of Chinese descent. In addition, as of 2010, the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville IL-IN-WI metro area had 92,712 people of Chinese descent. Chicago is the second oldest settlement of Chinese in America after the Chinese fled persecution in California.
The present Chicago Chinatown formed about 1915, after settlers moved steadily south from near the Loop where the first enclaves were established in the 19th century. Chinatown is sometimes confused with an area on the city's North Side sometimes referred to as New Chinatown, which is centered on Argyle Street and is somewhat of a misnomer given that it is largely populated by people of Southeast Asian heritage.

The Chicago metropolitan area, often referred to as Chicagoland.
Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837.
The name Chicago is derived from a French rendering of the Native American word shikaakwa, translated by some sources as wild leek or wild onion or wild garlic.
The first known reference to the site of the current city of Chicago as Checagou was by Robert de LaSalle around 1679 in a memoir.
The first known non-indigenous permanent settler in Chicago was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable. Du Sable was of African and French descent and arrived in the 1780s. traditionally stated to be Haitian, from the French colony of Saint Domingue He is commonly known as the Founder of Chicago.
The municipal flag of Chicago has four red six-pointed stars
1. The first star represents Fort Dearborn.
2. The second star stands for the Great Chicago Fire of 1871
3. The third star symbolizes the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893
4. The fourth star represents the Century of Progress Exposition (1933–1934)

Tour of Chicago's Historic Chinatown
Looking to escape the anti-Chinese violence that had broken out on the west coast, the first Chinese arrived in Chicago after 1869 when the First Transcontinental Railroad was completed. Centered on Cermak and Wentworth Avenues, Chicago's Chinatown neighborhood is on the South Side (located in the Armour Square community area). Chicago is the second oldest settlement of Chinese in America after the Chinese fled persecution in California. The present Chicago Chinatown formed about 1915, after settlers moved steadily south from near the Loop where the first enclaves were established in the 19th century. Chicago's Chinatown is home to a many Chinese restaurants, gift shops, grocery stores, Chinese medicine stores, as well as a number of services that cater to people interested in Chinese culture, including those speaking varieties of Chinese, especially Cantonese.
