Walks in Sussex: Exploring Chichester
Chichester is an ancient town, going back to Roman times when they built the six and a half feet walls around it and the roads to London and Silchester. The Anglo-Saxons were here and the Normans.
I walk the heart of Chichester, exploring the market centre and cathedral. Join me.

Chichester: English courses in the traditional town of Chichester
Chichester is a small city in the south of England, approximately half-way between Portsmouth and Brighton and just a 2 hour drive from London. The impressive city centre stands on the foundations of an ancient Roman-British city and quite a lot of its medieval city walls are still in place. The streets have kept their cross-shaped layout, radiating outwards from the famous medieval market cross leading to the North, South, East and West shopping streets with their small shops and cafés. Your English summer school is based on the Bishop Otter Campus of the University of Chichester, just a 10-minute walk from the historic city centre. Spend your summer holidays in an international atmosphere on this very attractive campus – join the numerous activities organized by our team, or use the great sports facilities. Chichester also benefits from being close to the great beaches of Bognor Regis and West Wittering and public transport takes you there in about 15 minutes.
Armchair Walks: A stroll through Chichester and Cathedral
Chichester is the county town of West Sussex as well as a cathedral city in it's own right. This is a point of View walk or Slow TV as it is called. There is no commentary, narration or voice over. The concept is to provide the viewer a gentle carefree stroll through an English Town, City, British Countryside or UK landscape from the comfort of their armchair. Many people are unable to get out in the country, other suffer from dementia or anxiety issues. These walks hope to distress and relax.

A short history of Chichester's City Walls - shown at the City Walls Illuminations event
This film was shown as part of a free event celebrating the restoration of Chichester City Walls on Saturday 14 April 2012 organised by us. Throughout the evening this specially commissioned film about their history was projected onto the face of the walls, which featured local people recalling their memories of the walls over the years.
The film is by Alex Buckley (alex@rolemop.org.uk or rolemop.org.uk).

Roman Chichester Priory Park Archaeology Project 2017
This is a video I recorded some time ago in Priory Park in Chichester when the local authority were doing an archaeological dig in priory park of Roman ruins. This was the talk given before they covered it all over again. If you haven't visited, it is well worth visiting Chichester and the surrounding areas, there is Fishbourne Roman Palace down the road, in Chichester Cathedral (free entry) is a glass floor area where you can look down on old ruins. There are many notices up around the City about different ruins etc in different places. Inside Chichester Museum (free entry) there are excavated ruins you can see as well as plenty to look at while you are in there and around Chichester are mounds etc where something once was or happens to be covered over (like the mound where an old Roman Amphitheatre once stood).

Chichester Harbour Walk from Bosham
We had an amazing walk, suggested by fancyfreewalks.org from Bosham, round Chichester harbour, via Itchenor, Chichester Marina, Fishbourne and back to Bosham for sunset this Bank Holiday. The weather was perfect, and the views and wildlife were absolutely stunning! Our Jack Russell terrier absolutely adored it, and the whole route seems ideal for dogs (on the proviso that they're the right size for the foot ferry - we saw a couple of labradors on the boat, so basically, unless they're St Bernards, they should be fine). The route is 11 miles, so it's not a short walk, but the route is entirely flat, and easy going.

Relaxing Winter Walk Around Chichester City Centre (Wellbeing Walks)
This wellbeing walk is a bit different. Normally I like to go where there are as few people as possible, but I thought I would have a gentle stroll around Chichester City streets to share where I live, what the buildings are like and some of the street art work you can find. These wellbeing walks videos are first person perspective walking tours that I find relaxing, they feature no music, just natural sounds. This walking tour is a winter walk around the streets of Chichester, West Sussex filmed in February 2019. I walk into West Street, cut down the side of the Cathedral into South Street, round the bottom of the town to the city wall, across a car park to get back to the streets, take a route back to South Street, head up South Street into East Street, cut away from East Street, get followed by a John Lewis delivery truck! head near Priory Park and back out on to the top of North Street, head down North Street and turn back into East Street which I follow to John Keats before cutting off East Street to end the walk.
Walking is a great activity for your wellbeing and I find watching relaxing walks helps me to relax when I can't get out and walk myself, or just putting a wellbeing walk on in the background and falling asleep to the sounds of the journey.
