This is a neat 1964 8mm film recorded by the Jang family. My wife was born and raised in North Bay Ontario.
A Chief Commanda I cruise on Lake Nipissing from North Bay to Haudiere Lodge, now apparently called Chaudiere Lodge, and back, showing the North Bay shore upon approach.
One of the sites you'll see during the return to North Bay is one of the old island uranium mines buildings, just stacks left now. No uranium was found. Story goes that the prospector who announced he'd found uranium there was using a faulty geiger counter. But others believe he was knowingly lying about his readings, an all too common thing that scam artists do. It touched off a rush and huge investments, a takeover, and drilling to 400 feet without finding anything before the whole deal finally collapsed. However, an ore truck driver later claims he was contracted under the table to deliver a truck load of ore samples from a Denison Mines uranium site for a University research study. He suspected Russians, and surreptitiously followed the ore being delivered to the island on a barge. In other words, a deliberate salting job, the Bre-Ex scandal of it's day.
Another interesting part is the islands were formed from 1 of 2 ancient volcanoes under Lake Nipissing that 'super-exploded' about 175 million years ago. But their origins are far older, as part of a massive magma rift that opened up from north-west of Lake Superior all the way down to the Ottawa area 100s of millions of years ago when the Pangea super-continent was ripping apart.
