Riding the Chief Ladiga Trail. Ride along with Sharon and Ray Steelman as they ride a 27 mile round trip on the Chief Ladiga trail in Alabama. The 34-mile long Chief Ladiga Trail is Alabama's premier rail-trail. It is located in Cleburne and Calhoun counties, in east-central Alabama. The smooth asphalt surface travels through the Tallegeda National Forest and connects to Georgia's Silver Comet Trail to the east (near Cedartown and Esom Hill). The Chief Ladiga and Silver Comet travel over 95 miles when combined, and form the longest paved trail in America. Both trails are non-motorized and are great for walking, bicycling, rollerblading, hiking and dog walking.
From east to west, Chief Ladiga passes through several cities in Alabama: Piedmont, Jacksonville, Weaver, and Anniston.
Both the Chief Ladiga and Silver Comet are:
Free
Paved
Built on abandoned rail lines
Rail-trail projects
Currently, the Chief Ladiga ends in northern Anniston. Plans are underway to extend the trail an additional 6 miles, where it will end at Anniston's Amtrak station. Plans are progressing to make the Amtrak station bike friendly; allowing for a return train route to Atlanta, and other cities along the Amtrak line.
Not only will the Amtrak station connect to the Chief Ladiga, but the station is also a short walk to the mountain biking trails located on Coldwater Mountain.
The Chief Ladiga
Day 3 we rode roundtrip between Anniston and Piedmont, Alabama with a short side spur in Jacksonville. Total mileage 41 miles.
The Chief Ladiga is just about as straight and flat as rails trails can get only to be broken up crossing the JSU campus in Jacksonville.
Cycling the Chief Ladiga Trail - September 2017
Cycling the Chief Ladiga Trail - September 2017, riding from Anniston Al to AL/GA state line near Esom Hill GA. Early sunday morning, perfect weather and great trail conditions.
The 33-mile trail stretches from the Alabama-Georgia state line to Weaver. The Chief Ladiga is on the same rail corridor as the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia as far as Piedmont, Alabama. From there it parallels an abandoned Southern Railway line for a few miles west of town until it leaves the old Seaboard rail line, heading south on the Southern Railway route until the trail ends just north of Anniston.

Bicycle Touring: The Southern US Piedmont
Hey subscribers and viewers! Christian here with another video that I finally put together of my continued East Coast/ Appalachian bicycle tour of Fall 2016. I'm a month + late with this video, as the footage was recorded from November 2nd until November 8th, 2016.
This section of the trip consists of my ride through the Southern Piedmont region from Asheville, North Carolina to Montgomery, Alabama, which is basically the hilly but no longer mountainous section of the extreme lower Appalachians. It includes the Silver Comet/ Chief Ladiga rail trails which together provide 90 miles of protected, beautiful bike lanes that were once a railway line. Enjoy, like, subscribe, and let me know what you think of my video down below!
Leave any questions about my trip/ bicycle touring etc and I will gladly answer!

G.R.I.T.S. Labor Day Ride 2016, Cedartown, GA to Piedmont, AL, USA
The Georgia Rails Into Trails Society (G.R.I.T.S.) held their annual Labor Day ride. This year's ride started at Cedartown, Georgia, and several distance options were available. Henry Hall and I rode the 48 mile option to Piedmont Alabama and back, using the Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga Trails. We added a bit to the distance by visiting the Veterans Park just west of Piedmont, plus we saw the old train depot and some cool painted wall graphics.
We appreciate the G.R.I.T.S. volunteers who helped make this ride possible.
Visit to Piedmont, Alabama, during GRITS Labor Day Ride, 2010
In 2010, the GRITS Labor Day Ride started at Cedartown, Georgia. Piedmont, Alabama was the turnaround point for the 47 mile option, which used the Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga trail system exclusively. I also checked out downtown Piedmont, the train depot from the other abandoned railroad there, and the arched bridge just east of Piedmont on the way back.

GRITS Labor Day Ride 2014, Cedartown, GA to Piedmont, AL USA
The Georgia Rails Into Trails Society (GRITS) group hosted this ride which had options to ride on parts of the Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga trails, and some rural roads in the area as well. I spent most of my time on the trails and riding around Piedmont. This ride raises money to help take care of the Silver Comet Trail as it goes through Polk County.
If this looks familiar, it is because I took a similar video in 2010, but this one is higher quality and shows a few different scenes.
