How to Navigate China's Food and Beverage Distribution Channels
From 2005 to 2010, EU exports of F&B to China multiplied by almost five and opportunities for European SMEs to sell their products in China are likely to grow, driven by increasing disposable income, urbanisation, and a growing taste for foreign foodstuffs. But, beware of the fragmented distribution infrastructure and growing local competition.
Imports and distribution channels are complex and change frequently. Import procedures must be handled by licensed importers who rarely also act as distributors and, reversely, food distributors and traders are unlikely to hold import licences. Once inside China, the upscale and affluent appearance of many shopping precincts is a façade to localised and fragmented retail distribution networks. Even major retailers don't have large regional distribution centres so that distribution is generally handled on a store-by-store or city-by-city basis.
Join this webinar and learn about:
- Market overviews featuring information on market size, growth drivers and trends;
- China's F&B wholesale and retail distribution networks (hypermarkets, supermarkets, F&B chain stores, online stores with delivery services, etc.);
- Building a cohesive network of local importers and distributors;
- Benefits and inconveniences of channelling through Hong Kong traders (payment in foreign currency, wide distribution networks, etc.); as well as
- Other information such as exhibitions and other useful links tools.
Food Map of China - wok n roll Ep.51 by BONTV
Using the single term Chinese for all the different cuisines of this country is about as illuminating as lumping Italian, Russian, and Swedish fare all together under the label European. It's just not gonna do. There is so much regional diversity in Chinese cooking that the cuisine of each place can seen as a separate cuisine unto itself. Ok, so how to work through these differences? Check out the food map. As you peruse over the borders and symbols, you can start to see some differences emerge. Probably one of the clearest distinctions between them is simply what cooking method each uses. You can find stews to the North, braises in the center, and steaming in the South. And of course the one universal between all is the Wok. Grab your motion sickness pill because we're going on a food joy ride all over this country.

Lee Kum Kee Fun:) Healthy Chinese Cooking Cuisine Ambassador Project School Visit
facebook.com/LeeKumKeeEurope
With the nation’s diet and rising obesity at the top of the health agenda, the multi-national food giant Lee Kum Kee has created a new schools’ programme called Fun:) Healthy Chinese Cuisine Ambassadors.
In a rare visit to the UK from Hong Kong, Mr Charlie Lee, Lee Kum Kee Sauce Group Chairman, joined 21 pupils and their Food Tech teacher Jonathan Lewis at St Michael’s Catholic College in Bermondsey for a one hour masterclass in healthy Chinese cookery. Thousands of British students are set to benefit from the Fun:) Healthy Chinese Cuisine Ambassadors programme, Lee Kum Kee’s response to the new GCSE for Food Preparation & Nutrition which is now being taught in UK schools.
For more information, visit:
Here is the transcript of the video.
We have many programmes, we launched in 2013 which is over 70 schools over 1000 students and teachers and that’s the first phase. Second phase coming in the in another five years. We try to reach over 280 schools, trying to promote healthy eating, by cooking Chinese food.
We’re going to do a black bean chicken. Chinese food, everything is finely diced, finely chopped, so it can cook quickly.
Lee Kum Kee was started by my great grandfather who invited oyster sauce. We are actually celebrating 128 anniversary. Over the years we’ve produced over 200 products, selling in over 100 countries. Our mission as a company is to promote Chinese food cultural all over the world. This is one of the programme which is helping to promote Chinese culture to the world.
Have you tried oyster sauce before?
Oh yeah I’ve tried it.
You’ve tried it before? You like it?
Yeah it taste very nice.
You have got plenty of time, but I’m just reminding you, that you have got 12 minutes all together to finish off.
We also like hosting some competitions, even some young chefs’ competitions. There is one coming very soon, this coming September. We also support the Confucius institute. We try to support them to promote Chinese food culture.
We’ve got about three to four minutes left.
Then best part was when we were watching him cook over there it was really fun to watch.
My favourite moment today was when started cooking and preparing for the black bean chicken that we made. I had fun marinating with soy sauce and my partner cooking the vegetables.
That looks like a stir fry, that looks like a stir fry, that looks closer to a stir fry.
The kids did a really great job. You can tell they are really, really passionate about learning about great food. To be able to show them health Chinese cuisine with LKK, it’s always a pleasure.
Really, really nice.
I would think that most of these students will go home and share the experience with their families, and hopefully either replicate the dish they’ve made today or use the cook book they’ve been given to make some chine food for their friends or family.
Every time we come back for a demonstration with a new class, all the students are very enthusiastic.

How to cook a delicious Miao fish banquet | A China Icons Video
Feeling hungry? Fiona, our award winning Australian photo-blogger, learns how to cook a delicious Miao fish banquet.
The Miao people are one of China's largest ethnic minorities and their food is renowned for its hot and sour flavours. Not for the fainthearted!
Today, they start with a sour soup base, before adding local little fish, cherry tomatoes and herbs. To make this a truly delicious Miao fish banquet diners chose their own level of spice by adding a paste of dried chilli, garlic, coriander and spring onions.

Unsafe Street Food In China
Surge in demand for cheap food in Europe
In many parts of Asia, particularly in developing nations, there's a lot of cheap food for sale on the streets.
So when times are tough, it's not as hard as it is in some developed countries to feed a family.
In Europe, though, a new age of austerity has had lasting effects on ordinary families and households.
As part of our series on Money in Your Pocket, the BBC's European business correspondent, Nigel Cassidy, reports from the UK and Portugal on the surge in demand for cheap and canned food.

Asian cuisine styles can be broken down into several tiny regional styles that have rooted the peoples and cultures of those regions. The major types can be roughly defined as East Asian with its origins in Imperial China and now encompassing modern Japan and the Korean peninsula; Southeast Asian which encompasses Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Viet Nam, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines; South Asian states that are made up of India, Burma, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan as well as several other countries in this region of the continent; Central Asian and Middle Eastern.
Asian cuisine most often refers to East Asian (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean), Southeast Asian cuisine and South Asian cuisine. In much of Asia, the term does not include the country's native cuisines. For example, in Hong Kong and mainland China, Asian cuisine is a general umbrella term for Japanese cuisine, Korean cuisine, Filipino cuisine, Thai cuisine, Vietnamese cuisine, Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine and Indonesian cuisine; but Chinese cuisine and Indian cuisine are excluded.The term Asian cuisine might also be used to address the eating establishments that offer wide array of Asian dishes without rigid cuisine boundaries; such as selling satay, gyoza or lumpia for appetizer, som tam, rojak or gado-gado for salad, offering chicken teriyaki, nasi goreng or beef rendang as main course, tom yam and laksa as soup, and cendol or ogura ice for dessert. In modern fusion cuisine, the term Asian cuisine might refer to the culinary exploration of cross-cultural Asian cuisine traditions. For example combining the culinary elements of Vietnam and Japanese, Thai and Malay, or Indonesian and Chinese.
Japanese cuisine is the food—ingredients, preparation and way of eating—of Japan. The traditional food of Japan is based on rice with miso soup and other dishes, each in its own utensil, with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients. The side dishes often consist of fish, pickled vegetables, and vegetables cooked in broth. Fish is common in the traditional cuisine. It is often grilled. Fish may be served raw as sashimi or in sushi. Seafood and vegetables are also deep-fried in a light batter as tempura.
Apart from rice, staples include noodles, such as soba and udon. Japan has many simmered dishes such as fish products in broth called oden, or beef in sukiyaki and nikujaga. Foreign food, in particular Chinese food in the form of noodles in soup called ramen and fried dumplings, gyoza, and western food such as curry and hamburger steaks are commonly found in Japan. Historically, the Japanese shunned meat, but with the modernization of Japan in the 1860s, meat-based dishes such as tonkatsu became common.
Chinese cuisine includes styles originating from the diverse regions of China, plus styles of Chinese people in other parts of the world. The history of Chinese cuisine in China stretches back for thousands of years and has changed from period to period and in each region according to climate, imperial fashions, and local preferences. Over time, techniques and ingredients from the cuisines of other cultures were integrated into the cuisine of the Chinese peoples due both to imperial expansion and from the trade with nearby regions in pre-modern times as well as from Europe and the New World in the modern period.
Styles and tastes also varied by class, region, and ethnic background. This led to an unparallelled range of ingredients, techniques, dishes and eating styles in what could be called Chinese food, leading Chinese to pride themselves on eating a wide variety of foods while remaining true to the spirit and traditions of Chinese food culture.
Thai cuisine is the national cuisine of Thailand. Blending elements of several Southeast Asian traditions, Thai cooking places emphasis on lightly prepared dishes with strong aromatic components. The spiciness of Thai cuisine is well known. As with other Asian cuisines, balance, detail and variety are of great significance to Thai chefs. Thai food is known for its balance of three to four fundamental taste senses in each dish or the overall meal: sour, sweet, salty, and bitter.
