Taiwan - Hualien County - Chike Mountain
There are many varieties of daylilies, but those grown on high mountains are of a better quality. Because Chihke Mountain, which reaches around 900 meters above sea level, has low temperatures, and because daylilies tend to grow slower, and also because of the abundant mists brought about by the clouds, and the red soil that is suited for daylily cultivation, the daylilies grown here are of a better taste. Daylilies are perennial plants, and many of the daylilies currently grown on Chihke Mountain are more than 30-40 years old. Weeding and fertilization need to be done on a regular basis, but otherwise, very little care is needed. However, in August and September of every year, during their flowering season, the farmers need to mobilize the entire family to work hard as they pick, dry and bake the plants.

Buo Ai area is not only the central political district of Taiwan, but also a must-see tourist attraction for foreigners. Many old houses are preciously maintained for over one hundred years because of the concentration of political agencies within this location.
An early morning at SIXTY STONE MOUNTAIN, Hualien (花蓮六十石山)
In this short video I visit the well-known Sixty Stone Mountain in southern Hualien County early in the morning. Very pretty scenery, even before the day lily season started.

From Travel in Taiwan magazine 2014-05-06:
By Rick Charette
South of Antong Hot Springs, Sixty Stone (Liushidan) Mountain overlooks the East Rift Valley floor, its peak about 800 meters above sea level. A 300/400-hectare tableland of day lilies carpets its top, blooming in spectacular fashion August~September, with the paddy-grid far below a unique backdrop. I’ve been on the mountain when the big orange show is on, and it really is a thrill; on this trip, however, we found ourselves wrapped up in thick, rolling mists, which though not what we’d come for was nevertheless wonderfully rewarding aesthetically, creating myriad artistic shanshui-painting-style canvases for eye and camera. Chike Mountain, northeast of Yuli, is also known for lovely day lily vistas.

Hualien whale watching tours
Hualien, dubbed the 'back mountain' of Taiwan, is a world class scenic treasure. Situated beside the Pacific Ocean, Hualien boasts of its god-given ocean resources. Whale watching in particular has become a very popular tourist activity. Not only does it bring tourists closer to the ocean creatures, it also helps the conservation of whales and dolphins.
Through these professional introductions, visitors get to know more about Hualien's unique ocean ecology and the natural behavior of whales and dolphins. They also can experience heartwarming contact with these ocean creatures. Besides Fraser's dolphin, there are also the elegant Risso's dolphin and the naughty Spinner dolphin. These human-animal experiences add luster to visitors' concepts of the ocean.
The azure water reflects the blue sky; dolphins and whales roam the sea. What are you waiting for? Put on some sun block, come to the sea with us and enjoy a wonderful nature trip!

Eye in the Sky: Taiwan's HEAVENLY HUALIEN (Barren Beaches)
If you head down the eastern coast of Taiwan, you will find the sleepy town of Hualien nestled between tropical mountains and beaches that nobody seems to go to. Seriously, the beaches were nearly empty aside from the occasional fisherman. It was the end of July and it was H-O-T! But isn't that the reason people go to the beach in the first place, to cool off?
Their loss is your gain if you find yourself in Hualien where the beaches belong to you.
We found an awesome Bed and Breakfast tucked into a jungle just a 150 meters from the beach (another empty beach). It was basically an artist colony built by hand by the owner and artist. It has a Jungle Book feel to it. It's not on the GPS and it's location is hard to find, but once you do, you will find it hard to leave. You can try to search for the place by using this Chinese: 曼波海灘疊疊樂. That's from a Facebook group operated by the owner of the hotel. Good luck on your adventure.

Taiwan - Hualien County - Liyu Lake
Liyu Lake has a visitor center where visitors can find detailed information on all aspects of traveling. Liyu Lake's shore recreation area has developed a variety of water activities and recreation facilities which are suitable for the whole family. The bicycle path that circles the lake is around 5 kilometers long, and allows cyclists to experience the pleasant natural beauty of the lakes and mountains from their vehicles. The 601 meter-tall Liyu Mountain has many forest footpaths which allow hikers to enjoy the birds, flowers, and scenery, making it one of the best exercise choices. If you are not in a hurry to leave Liyu Lake, there is a fully equipped, up-to-date campsite in beautiful surroundings, just several hundred meters south of the lake. The visitors can experience outdoor recreation with the sky for a ceiling, and the ground for a bed.
I Choose to Return To My Hometown - Mafo Village, Guangfu Township, Hualien County
Chang Hsiu-Chen from Mafo Village of Guangfu Township, Hualien County decided to commit to village reconstruction after acquiring supports during discussion with her classmates of her primary school. As she was dedicated to her duty with no thought for a reward, villagers recognized her and would like to cooperate with her and help her. Mafo Village owns abundant agricultural products and beautiful natural scenes with great development potential. So tourism should be promoted to allow tourists to experience rural life here.
