Chikubushima and Nagahama - Shiga, Japan 2.1 - 6.13.16
This is my first video from my second trip to Shiga, Japan.
Some of my friends and I went to the Northeast side of Lake Biwa to visit Chikubu island (Chikubushima) and the City of Nagahama. Chikubushima is the second largest island in Lake Biwa and is home to many historical temples (the oldest is about 1,300 years old).
After we rode the Biwako-Kisen boat back to Nagahama, we visited the Kurokabe glass factory in Kurokabe square and got to create our own designs to sandblast onto glass. We also visited the Kaiyodo figure museum.

Nagahama Hikiyama Festival - Shiga - 長浜曳山まつり

It is said that the Nagahama Hikiyama Matsuri (festival) started over 400 years ago in order to celebrate the birth of the son of Hideyoshi Toyotomi a local warlord. Ever since locals in Nagahama city have worked hard to maintained this massive gorgeous Hikiyama floats as a matter of local and national pride. Unlike other floats, Nagahama's Hikiyama also serves as portable stages for the city famous Kodomo kabuki or children's kabuki.
Like the Japanese traditional Kabuki, Kodomo kabuki only stars young boys from ages five to 12. Here as well, children spend a lot of time mastering kabuki performances, complete with costumes and makeup and often forgo weekends and school holidays.

This was registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage this year.
It is approximately one hour by JR from Kyoto station to Nagahama station.

Omi-Maiko Beach - Shiga, Japan 2.2 - 6.18.16
This is my second video from my second trip to Shiga, Japan.
On June 18, my friend Cevetta and I went to Omi-maiko beach on the west side of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture.
We weren't quite sure that the beach was open to the public at this time of year, but we tried anyways! Omi-maiko beach is just a short walk from Omi-maiko station. See the end of the video for directions! It was very beautiful and definitely worth the trip on a nice day.
