NANTUCKET, MA- Memorial Service for Missing Boater Jon Hemingway (03-26-10)
A memorial for Jon Hemingway will be held at Brant Point at 2 p.m. Friday, followed immediately by a celebration of his life at the Chicken Box. Parking will be limited at Brant Point, and those who wish to attend are encouraged to car pool, walk or bike to the beach.
Hemingway, 36, a Nantucket landscaper, disappeared at sea last Wednesday night in a bizarre boating accident in Nantucket Sound, leaving his wife and two daughters sleeping in the cabin of their 22-foot powerboat, which began spiraling erratically nine miles north of Nantucket before grounding near Steps Beach Thursday morning.
Family: No mystery to missing boaterHemingway's connection to the sea was the defining trait that his friends and family recalled as they offered their remembrances of him over the past week.
Hemingway, who owned the island landscaping company HemingwayScapes, Inc., with his wife, Katie, could be found most often on his boat, heading out of Hither Creek in Madaket to go lobstering, scalloping, tuna fishing or to his favorite spot on Tuckernuck Island, where he was a caretaker for a property.
He was more comfortable on the boat than he was on the Earth, said Katie Hemingway. He was like that from the moment I met him. Our first date was on a boat. He took me striper fishing, and he was shocked that I got a fish and no one else did.
Every moment of our life together, she recalled, the boat and the ocean were huge draws for him. That's where his passion is.

A Visit to Plymouth, MA/Interview with Plymouth County Register John Buckley
PART 1:
Owner Hugh Fitzpatrick and reporter Michelle Greene pay a visit to historic Plymouth, Massachusetts landmarks such as Plymouth Rock, the replica of the Mayflower, and Plimouth Plantation.
PART 2:
Hugh Fitzpatrick interviews John Buckley, Plymouth County Register of Deeds. The deeds at this particular registry go back as far as the 1620's. Land transactions go back as far the early colonists. Around 1627, the governor switched over to private property rights, which allows for a more productive society. This is when the recording of land records began.
The first colonial document laid out the land around the area where the Mayflower had landed, and those ownership locations are still marked by plaques today along that road.
The Plymouth Colony records have many of the original Pilgrims' names. People come from all around the world to do genealogical research to look up their ancestors. The placard above the entrance to the registry reads America's First Registry of Deeds, which has never been disputed.

Nantucket: A Short Film by Oregon Poet Kim Stafford
In March 2013, the Nantucket Historical Association recently welcomed special guest poet and writer Kim Stafford to Nantucket for a week of outreach and creative writing programs.
Kim Stafford is Director of the Northwest Writers Institute at Lewis and Clark College in Oregon, and co-Director of the Documentary Studies Program at Lewis & Clark College. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose, including The Muse Among Us: Eloquent Listening and Other Pleasures of the Writer's Craft and 100 Tricks Every Boy Can Do: How My Brother Disappeared.
While on the island, Stafford spent two days visiting with students at the Nantucket High School English department, and three days at various public events hosted by the NHA.
This week of poetry and creative writing programs is presented as a collaboration with the Nantucket Atheneum and with the generous support of the William Froelich Foundation. that included outreach in the local schools, an inspirational staff development meeting, a Food for Thought lecture, an evening of music and poetry at Greater Light, and a creative writing workshop. Kim created this film shortly after his arrival to the island that captures what he felt was the essence of the island with an emphasis on place.
