The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire turns 35
The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire turns 35 this year. The museum, co-founded by Ona Barnet and Denise Doleac, first opened on Saturday, July 30, 1983 as the Children’s Museum of Portsmouth in the old South Meeting House on Marcy Street. After 15 years in that location, the museum decided it needed more space and began looking for a new location. The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire turns 35 this year. The Children's Museum of New Hampshire Trout Release
The Children's Museum of New Hampshire is taking part in Trout in the Classroom, sponsored by Trout Unlimited, a national program in which eastern brook trout are raised from the egg stage until they can be released into the wild. The program's goal is to raise awareness of the environment and of the health of local watersheds. The Great Bay chapter of Trout Unlimited and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department are assisting us. Because these trout are wild animals, a state license is required. We are licensed to release the 200 trout we've been raising into the Cochecho River here in Dover.
We released our first batch of fingerlings on April 7 with our Junior Science class. At 3 months old they were ready to go, and our tank was getting too crowded. Wearing rubber boots, the students met in the classroom with their teacher Kiki, helped Sue scoop up 60 fingerlings into jars full of 42 degree tank water, and had a snack of goldfish before setting out. Carrying the jars in a cooler, we walked .3 miles into downtown Dover to the 1st Street parking lot, where steps lead down to the river. There we met Mitch, our Trout Unlimited liaison, dressed in waders and ready to help.
At the riverbank we tested the river water temperature, which was 39 degrees, to make sure it wasn't too warm. Then we mixed some river water with the tank water so they could begin to adapt. After a few minutes, we said good-bye to the trout as we released them into the Cochecho River. Mitch pointed out how they knew just what to do, swimming against the current, going after tiny insects, and then seeking cover at the bottom. They instinctively adjusted to their new environment and were quickly out of sight!
We plan two more releases: April 22 as part of our Earth Day celebration and May 21 as part of Cochecho River Day. For more information call the museum at 603-742-2002, check our Facebook page, or visit our website childrens-museum.org
Play is Important! NH Gives & the Children's Museum of NH
June 11 at 6pm – June 12 at 6pm, 2019
For the 4th year, The Children's Museum of New Hampshire is participating in the annual NH Gives program, an initiative of the NH Center for Nonprofits. This event is designed to bring the state together as one community, raising as much money and awareness as possible for NH’s non-profits within a 24-hour flood of donations.
The museum’s goal is to raise $2,000.
Donations made will be used to support the families who might struggle to pay museum admission fees. Over 30% of visitors are only able to visit because of the “Museum Access for All” program, which does things like provide subsidized bus visits for Title 1 Schools, allows families using EBT cards to pay just $1 per person admission, and even offers free programs for families with children on the autism spectrum.
If the museum reaches its goal, CMNH president Jane Bard will lead the staff on a parade through the museum's new Interactive Classroom!
Visit to donate during NH Gives, or visit childrens-museum.org to learn more.
