Far East Children's Railway in Khabarovsk Russia.
A children's railway is an extracurricular educational institution, where teenagers learn railway professions. This phenomenon originated in the USSR and was greatly developed in Soviet times.
Many children's railways are still functioning in post-Soviet states and Eastern European countries.
RUSSIA: THE LITTLE BEE CHILDREN'S RAILWAY LINE
Russian/Nat
Children have always played with train sets, dreaming of becoming train drivers when they grow up. But Russian youngsters have gone one better - they run their own railway line.
The Little Bee railway was dreamed-up under former dictator Josef Stalin to instruct children in the work ethic of communist society.
Now it's just for fun. But financial problems in the wake of communism's collapse are threatening to derail one of the Soviet Union's strangest - and most endearing - legacies.
This must be the biggest toy train in the world.
Most children only dream of becoming train drivers. These Russian youngsters are doing it for real.
Every summer vacation, over a thousand boys and girls get the chance to play with a train set their Western contemporaries could scarcely even imagine.
The Little Bee children's railway is one of more than 20 similar lines across Russia.
But despite the holiday atmosphere, the children's railways have a sinister past.
Stalin's transport minister set them up in the 1930s to train youngsters to keep the Soviet Union rolling if war took their fathers to the frontline.
Other children found themselves working the points and collecting tickets when both parents were locked away in prison camps.
But unlike other relics of Soviet childhood, the Little Bee still attracts scores of eager Russian kids.
Take Dima, who has been working this line for three summers now.
As the driver's assistant, he is fiercely proud of his work.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
My speciality is helping the engine-driver. I suppose I'm responsible for people's lives. If something happens, it's up to the engine-driver and his helper.

Something of the communist ideal remains to this day. The children don't get paid - a present at the end of the season is all they can expect for their labours.
The hours are long and competition for jobs on the line is as intense as in the grown-up world. But for kids like Valentin, the chance to work the trains is enough.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
Fine, I like it. What is there to do anyway during the summer in a hot city? Here, after work, we change and go swimming. (What about the salary?) No, we only work here because we're enthusiastic about the job. I personally work for the pleasure of working here. I work because I like it.

It's not just for laughs, though. Discipline is tough and safety checks rigorous. But the railway becomes a way of life - almost 70 per cent of the children go on to work the mainlines when they grow up.
But although the railway is one Soviet institution which has outlived communism, its days may be numbered.
Due to celebrate its 60th anniversary next year, lack of funding may soon spell the end of the line for the Little Bee.

Krasnoyarsk children's railway
The children's railway in Krasnoyarsk was the first of its kind in the country. It opened in 1936 and became the prototype for all Soviet children's railways. Despite its age, it still transports passengers and is used to train (pun intended!) young railway workers.

Budapest Children's Railway, March 23-24 2019
A weekend spent mostly on the interesting 760 mm Bosnian narrow gauge Children's Railway, constructed as Pioneer Railway during the communist era in 1948 on Széchenyi Hill, part of the II. and XII. district to the west of Budapest. Today it is still operated by Hungarian State Railways MÁV. Children volunteer as station masters, conductors, signalmen, cashiers - of course supervised by adults.
Class Mk45 diesel locomotives built by Romanian Faur in 1973 bear the main brunt of the quite busy operation popular with day-trippers.
Two steam train pairs operated each day that weekend, the nostalgic trips are fully booked in advance. I captured 490.039 from 1942 several times on the steep grades.
