Children's railway of Plovdiv city - Bulgaria
September 22th 2007 - The Day of Re-Opening after 8 years devastation ...
Look for the rebuilding campaign at:
The scenic adventure begins at Pioner station, equipped with roomy platform, two tracks and block signals. Leaving the station, the small train accelerates the speed. On its way up the hill it passes trought a high bridge, a grade crossing and a tunnel, which is also used as a depot overnights. Next after the tunnel, which is one of the most exciting elements for the passengers, the train approaches a steep grade. Here the track is build in a 6 shape. Right after that we reach the Snejanka station, where there are a few minutes stay, and then the train heads to the last, Panorama station. During the locomotive shunting, the passengers have the opportunity to enjoy the unique nature of the hill-top and take a look at the amazing panorama of the city of Plovdiv. After the shunting is done and the brakes are checked, the little train heads down the mountain towards Pioneer station for the next awaiting passengers .

RUSSIA: THE LITTLE BEE CHILDREN'S RAILWAY LINE
Russian/Nat
Children have always played with train sets, dreaming of becoming train drivers when they grow up. But Russian youngsters have gone one better - they run their own railway line.
The Little Bee railway was dreamed-up under former dictator Josef Stalin to instruct children in the work ethic of communist society.
Now it's just for fun. But financial problems in the wake of communism's collapse are threatening to derail one of the Soviet Union's strangest - and most endearing - legacies.
This must be the biggest toy train in the world.
Most children only dream of becoming train drivers. These Russian youngsters are doing it for real.
Every summer vacation, over a thousand boys and girls get the chance to play with a train set their Western contemporaries could scarcely even imagine.
The Little Bee children's railway is one of more than 20 similar lines across Russia.
But despite the holiday atmosphere, the children's railways have a sinister past.
Stalin's transport minister set them up in the 1930s to train youngsters to keep the Soviet Union rolling if war took their fathers to the frontline.
Other children found themselves working the points and collecting tickets when both parents were locked away in prison camps.
But unlike other relics of Soviet childhood, the Little Bee still attracts scores of eager Russian kids.
Take Dima, who has been working this line for three summers now.
As the driver's assistant, he is fiercely proud of his work.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
My speciality is helping the engine-driver. I suppose I'm responsible for people's lives. If something happens, it's up to the engine-driver and his helper.

Something of the communist ideal remains to this day. The children don't get paid - a present at the end of the season is all they can expect for their labours.
The hours are long and competition for jobs on the line is as intense as in the grown-up world. But for kids like Valentin, the chance to work the trains is enough.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
Fine, I like it. What is there to do anyway during the summer in a hot city? Here, after work, we change and go swimming. (What about the salary?) No, we only work here because we're enthusiastic about the job. I personally work for the pleasure of working here. I work because I like it.

It's not just for laughs, though. Discipline is tough and safety checks rigorous. But the railway becomes a way of life - almost 70 per cent of the children go on to work the mainlines when they grow up.
But although the railway is one Soviet institution which has outlived communism, its days may be numbered.
Due to celebrate its 60th anniversary next year, lack of funding may soon spell the end of the line for the Little Bee.

BDŽ 44-132 with express train B2654 in Varna, Bulgaria / БДЖ 44-132 с бърз влак БВ2654 във Варна
Quite slowly and almost silently, the Bulgarian electric locomotive 44-132 sets at 17:40h the express train B2654 to Pleven on track 4 in Varna in motion. Unfortunately, the sun is at this time parallel to the tracks. Therefore the train isn't optimally illuminated, however, so the nice station building of Varna on the Black Sea coast comes into its own. The long platforms give it an idea, that the trains in the past were certainly longer. After panning you will see the diesel locomotive 55-196, which shunts the cars of the express train B3636 to Sofia.

The Bells. Monument to children in Sofia, Bulgaria. Funny guard onsite
We are visiting a monument dedicated to all children in the world, located in Sofia, Bulgaria. It has the bells for all countries in the world and only children are allowed to ring it.
I had a guard following me there as well and this made this tour even better.
Very interesting discovery was seeing the bells for Soviet Union and GDR - the countries that no longer exist.

Trains in Bulgaria (summer 2013)
Locomotive 46 125.1 with freight train from Plovdiv to Sofia
Bulgarian railways: Big train on the small railway!
The tradition has been respected this year too! Even with 10 cars, passenger train 16103 was overcrowded! For the Liberation day of Bulgaria - March 3, many people had boarded on the train not only to enjoy the ride on the small railway, but also to take a part in the events, which were organized in the town of Yakoruda for the National holiday of Bulgaria. Again the locomotives are two, not because one cannot serve the train, but mostly of precaution. Me and friends of me prefer to follow the train on the whole way from Septemvri to Dobrinishte. The weather was almost perfect for trainspotting! A lot of snow and sun! Well, sometimes the sun was playing with us and it didn't shine when it had to, but even that, we manage to do some good photos!
