Spotlight on the OBX: Parks & Playgrounds
The best playground on the Outer Banks is the beach and everything water related, surfing, fishing, bodyboarding, visiting the piers, sandcastles, etc, but sometimes we need a break from the beach (I know, hard to believe) - especially the kiddos - but where to turn for a fun cost-effective, and energy-burning, activity?
Ah, I was hoping you would ask.
How about one of the fabulous parks and playgrounds the OBX has to offer?
Let's spin the Spotlight towards the OBX parks & playgrounds this week. I think you'll be surprised at the variety of fun (and locations) there is to offer. Something for everyone; swings, slides, jungle-gyms, tennis, basketball, skateboarding parks - even the four-legged members of the family have a fun spot...well dog's anyway...there are no ferret parks...yet!
Here are the parks we'll shine the Spotlight on:
Currituck Heritage Park has 39 acres of sound front property. The park is within walking distance to the Whalehead Club, Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.
Sandy Run in Kitty Hawk includes a 1/4mile interpretive nature walk with elevated boardwalk, canal pedestrian bridge, canoe/kayak docks, picnic shelter, on-site utilities and parking facilities.
Kitty Hawk Skate and Dog Park consists of a skate park, fenced in dog park, playground, and picnic areas with grills.
Hayman Park in Kill Devil Hills is a neighborhood recreation area that includes a picnic area, playground and open field.
Dare County Rec Park is located beside the Kill Devil Hills Water Plant. There are fields for playing baseball, softball and soccer, tennis courts, a playground and a rec center with indoor courts, game rooms, exercise rooms and space for classes.
Aviation Park in Kill Devil Hills includes a path that is ideal for biking, walking and rollerblading, playground equipment and a roller hockey rink.
Barnes Street Park in Nags Head, has plenty of space for all kinds of functions. There is a covered shelter, bathrooms, and a grill for group picnics or cookouts, a playground for children, and open grass space for soccer games or frisbee.
I'll zip it so you can enjoy the tour...

Heron Pond Montessori School Fall Festival - Kitty Hawk, NC 2014
The annual Fall Festival at Heron Pond Montessori Poor Ridge Road campus. 2014 marked the 19th festival and ranks as one of our best! The teachers and PSA teamed up to bring the kids even more fun and games than last year. Classic Fall Festival games such as the Donut Grab and Pumpkin Bowling were joined by PLINKO and a new and improved Obstacle Course.
Heron Pond Montessori School has been serving the Outer Banks families since September 1995. We chose the Montessori method of education for our schools because we believe in the “whole child” approach. The primary goal of a Montessori program is to help each child reach full potential in all areas of life. Activities promote the development of social skills, emotional growth and physical coordination as well as cognitive preparation. The holistic curriculum, under the direction of a specially prepared teacher, allows the child to experience the joy of learning, time to enjoy the process and insure the development of self-esteem, and provides the experiences from which children create their knowledge.
Heron Pond Montessori School in a continuation of its dedication to providing a quality program for its children and parents has implemented Music Together. Every child participates in a developmentally appropriate music curriculum that is highly regarded and respected around the world.
If you'd like to make Montessori part of your child's educational experience, please call us at (252) 261-7891.

Outer Banks Travel Vacations - Things To Do And Know | Travel Fun Guide
Outer Banks Travel Vacations - Things To Do And Know.
The Outer Banks have activities for relaxation and for adventure. The quiet beaches are the main draw to the area, but others visit OBX for the horseback riding, hang gliding and water sports. Touring the shipwrecks off the coast, sightseeing at Corolla's Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Kill Devil Hill's Wright Brothers National Memorial or Nag's Head's Jockey's Ridge State Park make a happy medium for recent vacationers who desire a more balanced getaway.
Why Go to Outer Banks.
History drips from the Outer Banks: Here, aviators Orville and Wilbur Wright took their famous first flight (at Kitty Hawk), the pirate Blackbeard fought his last battle (at Ocracoke) and the mysterious Lost Colony disappeared (where is anyone's guess).

Shooting Cats: Australia's War on Feral Cats
WARNING: This video contains graphic content.
In Shooting Cats, VICE set out to explore the consequences of Australia's feral cat plague, and confront the uncomfortable and violent realities of dealing with it. Most suburban Australians give feral cats little thought. But for residents of the country’s rural fringes, they’re a diabolical pest and scourge on wildlife. Found in 99 percent of Australia, they’re estimated to kill more than two million native animals a day. That devastation has seen Kangaroo Island local Barry Green declare a personal war against cats; trapping and skinning them, before turning them into hats and fridge magnets.

Why no aquarium has a great white shark
Many have tried to keep a white shark in captivity. Here's why that's so difficult.
There are several aquariums around the world, including one in Georgia, that house whale sharks, the biggest fish in the sea. But not one has a great white shark on display.
Aquariums have made dozens of attempts since the 1970s to display a captive great white shark. Most of those attempts ended with dead sharks.
By the 2000s, the only group still trying was the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which spent a decade planning its white shark program. In 2004, it acquired a shark that became the first great white to survive in captivity for more than 16 days. In fact, it was on display for more than six months before it was released back into the ocean.
In the following years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium hosted five more juvenile white sharks for temporary stays before ending the program in 2011. It was an expensive effort and had come under criticism due to injuries that some of the sharks developed in the tank.
Responding to those critics, Jon Hoech, the aquarium's director of husbandry operations, said: We believe strongly that putting people face to face with live animals like this is very significant in inspiring ocean conservation and connecting people to the ocean environment. We feel like white sharks face a significant threats out in the wild and our ability to bring awareness to that is significant in terms of encouraging people to become ocean stewards.
Check out the video above to learn why white sharks are so difficult to keep in captivity and how the Monterey Bay Aquarium designed a program that could keep them alive.

It's a good chance to talk about the Wright Brothers. I think for a long time at least when I was a child, in my history books, the first line about the Wright Brothers would be, 'Two lucky bicycle makers from Dayton Ohio come across the discovery of flight.'
but this year is a chance to talk about, that there wasn't any luck involved, that it was really through scientific development that they solved the problem of flight.

STORYLINE:
Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, landed in Rockefeller Center on Tuesday for the opening of an exhibit commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the Wright brothers' inaugural flight.
Armstrong was joined by Amanda Wright Lane, the great grand-niece of the Wright Brothers.
While Armstrong's 1969 landing vessel holds a place in the record books, the former astronaut emphasized that Orville and Wilbur Wright were the true pioneers.
Beside replicas of historic planes, shuttles and engines, Armstrong honored the brothers' determination before presenting a model of his own Apollo landing pod to children from New York's School for Discovery.
Amanda Wright Lane thought it was a great time to talk about the Wright Brothers and said that this historic milestone wasn't just due to plain luck, but through scientific development.
The exhibit, Centennial of Flight, commemorates Orville and Wilbur Wright's historic 12-second flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17th, 1903 and innovations in flight made over the last century. It will be on display through August 18 and is sponsored by General Electric, NASA, and the United States Airforce..
