A museum in Guatemala that teaches kids the importance of birds
Richard Rivera is a man who decided later in life to dedicate himself to a unique pursuit. He preserves knowledge about the hundreds of species of birds that inhabit Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.
In doing so, Richard is helping children in his community come in contact with nature and providing them with skills to ensure the environment’s future.
Lake Atitlan has become such a popular destination for bird watchers, the region has seen an increase in local residents becoming bird guides. Tour leaders are required to complete a training course that includes learning to name bird species in Spanish, Latin and English.
Watch our Urban Voice with Richard Rivera to also learn about the Bird Art Museum of Lake Atitlan.

Antigua Guatemala 2020 - Guatemala City to Antigua Guatemala, Chichicastenango & Lake Atitlan
Antigua Guatemala 2020 - Guatemala City to Antigua Guatemala, Chichicastenango & Lake Atitlan.
This is our revisit to Antigua Guatemala 2020. We're starting the year off right in Antigua. We fly into La Aurora international airport in Guatemala City, Guatemala. We then take an Uber from Guatemala to Antigua Guatemala for the first leg of our trip. We then head to Lake Atitlan and Chichicastenango and to the largest mercado in Central America. As well as visiting Lake Atitlan. Guatemala City to Antigua is a good start when first arriving in Guatemala and Guatemala City. We were just in Antigua Guatemala 2019 and loved it so much, we were planning how to get back ever since then.
We highly recommend Guatemala travel of course. And of course we recommend visiting Antigua Guatemala as well. Antigua Guatemala is absolutely beautiful. If you've seen my last videos from Guatemala, you'll know that this our favorite country and city in the world. While we haven't been everywhere, we've been enough places and countries to know. Guatemala 2020 is starting the year off right. And Antigua Guatemala travel is an awesome way to start the year.
This is my Antigua Guatemala travel vlog. I hope you'll enjoy my Antigua Guatemala vlog. We took an Antigua guatemala walking tour as soon as we arrived in Antigua. We visited the Casa del jade antigua guatemala and made a couple of purchases. Our hotel was Casa Encantada Antigua Guatemala. Please see the videos to see how absolutely beautiful it was. It also included breakfast from the terrace. The Antigua Guatemala walking tour was great, which we were allowed to meet the new Vice Mayor and visiting the jade museum. Antigua Guatemala nightlife is excellent; while shutting down early, it's absolutely beautiful. Lot's of bars, restaurants and live entertainment. Again, this is my Guatemala travel vlog; I hope you enjoy, like and subscribe. Remember, travel Guatemala.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Guatemala.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Quetzal is the currency of Guatemala and also the national bird, it is a fragile and rare animal. The bird´s tail feather was used as a form of currency back in the Maya Empire.
2. Atitlán means ‘at the water’ in Aztec language and is a lake in the nothern Guatemala highlands. It is the deepest lake in Central America and is considered as “the most beautiful lake in the world” by several explorers like Aldous Huxley. Atitlán is also surrounded by 3 conical volcanoes, making it a must to visit place.
3. Chichi or Chichicastenango is the no.1 shopping destination of whole Guatemala, it is located between 2 and 3 hours southwest of Guatemala City. Chichicastenango (also called Chichi) is considered to be home to the brightest probably most vibrant native market in Central America. You can find there a lot of things like local fabrics, clothing, pottery, wood crafted items or even fireworks, there is something for everyone. This City also hosts many festivals.
4. On May 30, 2010, an enormous hole, 60 feet wide and 30 stories deep, opened up in the middle of Guatemala City, swallowing a three-story building and a home. It also caused the death of a man. The reason for the formation of the sinkhole is thought to be the weak material the city is built on – volcano pumice. This was only 3 years after another sinkhole formed in Guatemala City, in 2007.
5. Much of Guatemala’s history has been marked by violence. For 36 years, the country was embattled in a civil war that took the lives of more than 200,000 people. The war brought about mass murders and resulted in millions of people being run off of their land. Guatemala’s civil war ended in December 1996, but the war scars still remain. Violence and intimidation are major problems in private life and in politics too.
6. 21 varieties of Mayan languages are spoken in Guatemala by mainly the rural population. Indigenous languages of Guatemala include Xinca and Garifuna, spoken by populations restricted to the coast. It is usual for native language speakers to have knowledge of either Spanish or other national languages beside their mother tongue. Efforts to preserve ancient Mayan literature and scripts are undertaken to know more about the history of the country.
7. The first chocolate bar was discovered during the Mayan civilization in Guatemala (Thank Mayan gods for that!). Mayans used to worship the cacao tree as they believed it to be sacred. The aphrodisiac properties of cocoa were well known and it was often consumed in the form of a drink. The Mayans used to pray to a deity called Ek Chuah, who symbolized the cacao tree. However, chocolate was usually consumed in its bitter form with the occasional use of chilli. Chocolate is widely consumed in Guatemala even today with a chocolate museum in the city of Antigua. And cocoa is still sacred in Guatemala with cocoa shops, confectioneries and breweries present in almost all the developed cities.

Exploring Colonial Antigua, Guatemala with kids
We are going to jump ahead here a few months because we are now traveling in Central America. I'll go back and finish the last couple from Ireland and some from Montana and Wyoming in a bit but I wanted to get these next couple from Antigua, Guatemala up because we've been having such a good time.
Antigua is a small colonial city about an hour from Guatemala City and is ringed by volcanos. It's history is one of Spanish Colonialism but there is a strong mayan influence as well. Our accommodation in the area was at Hostel La Quinta which was both affordable and perfectly nice and had a decent restaurant as well including an outdoor eating courtyard. Our first day we got our SIM cards from Tigo, went for a little hike down Las Cruces where we had great views of two of the volcanos, had lunch at a chocolate museum, visited a church, and went to Cafe No Se which is a speak easy type bar light by candles.
We finished with a great local dinner and headed home to get rest for the next day's hike up a volcano with Old Town Outfitters. I hope to get that one done in the next two days.

First long bus of the trip! Over night about 7 hours from Flores, Guatemala to Guatemala City, and then a quick and surprisingly efficient transfer to a shuttle bus, into Antigua Guatemala! If travel in Guatemala is like this, I will be pleasantly surprised! It was comfortable bus and left and arrived on time. Being Latin America, you expect travel in Guatemala to be as difficult as the other countries, but this seems like a promising start! Travel in Guatemala.
First impression? ... Wow. As you come down the road, you know you are in Antigua because the vibration of the cobble stones. What used to be the capital of Guatemala, now meaning ancient which is antigua in Spanish, this beautiful town is like a time machine taking you back hundreds of years.
Although touristy, Antigua and the Guatemalan people do a great job of keeping the old buildings intact, and in fact, creating modern businesses within the old buildings, keeping the vibe and feel of Antigua, how it should be.
I will be spending a few days in Antigua, Guatemala, basically until I feel like leaving, because I feel Antigua has a lot to offer!

Guatemala school gardens put to use to grow food
Guatemala has one of the world's highest rates of malnutrition among children.
More than half the population lives in poverty, and a drought has made the food crisis worse.
But an initiative for gardens in schools is raising hope, as David Mercer reports.

Hi Everyone! Thanks for watching!
For Spring Break 2019, I went on a mission trip to Guatemala! This video was filmed on our one fun day in Guatemala!
I would love to post videos of the several projects we did, the kids we met, etc.. but I unfortunately cannot for protection purposes.

My team and I spent our time ministering to children, as well as families that were affected by the volcano erruption.
We gave these families food, played with the children, loved them, and told them about Jesus Christ, the savior of the world!
