Melinda Childress McCulloch 1961-2014
Melinda Childress McCulloch passed away on Tuesday evening, July 1st, 2014, surrounded by her family and close friends. Melinda was a kind, generous and fiercely loyal wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.
A rabid fan of horror and supernatural films since childhood, she was fearless, curious and always in pursuit of the next adventure. Known fondly as MeMe to her family and Leroy to her close friends, Melinda lived on her own terms. Her courageous and fearless battle with breast cancer left all those she knew in awe -- never a whine -- never a complaint -- always on to the next step. Her brave departure from her earthly body lifted her cancer free soul into the arms of her beloved father Tommy whom she adored and missed dearly.
Melinda leaves behind her husband and true love Mike McCulloch and four beautiful children -- Jessie Mauldin, Demi Allen, Taylor McCulloch and Max McCulloch -- who each possess special gifts they received from their mother. Jessie has her Mother's kind and generous heart and Demi her protective and fierce loyalty. Taylor was gifted with his Mother's artistic talent and Max her fearless determination. She loved and adored her husband and children who gave her unwavering strength and support. Melinda is survived by her mother Patsy Childress who was also her best friend. Rarely a day passed without a long conversation between the two. She gave Melinda the love, friendship and guidance she needed to take on the challenges she faced in her life. From her first broken heart to her bedside support on the final days of her battle with cancer, Patsy was unyielding in her support and unconditional love of Melinda.
Melinda is also survived by her grandchildren Hiley Mauldin, Attie Barber and Jordan Cooper; her sister Leslie Allen and her husband Brian; her sister Cindy Van Schoyck and husband David; her niece Andi Allen; her nephews Gus Allen and Sumner Van Schoyck and a host of other family members.
A memorial service will be held at Cowboy Church of Ellis County in Waxahachie, Texas on Monday, July 14, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Should friends desire, memorials may be sent to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or a trust for Max McCulloch (First State Bank, 100 W. Main St., Italy, TX 76651).

Childress Vineyards is one of the most prominent wineries in the state’s re-emerging wine industry that has grown from 21 to more than 100 wineries since the year 2000. Winemaking thrived in North Carolina at the turn of the century; in fact, the Sixth Federal Census showed North Carolina leading all states in wine production until the onset of Prohibition in 1920.

RV Wine: Jones Von Drehle Winery, Thurmond, NC
One of the great things to do in your RV is to visit the many great wineries across the country. Jones Von Drehle ( is definitely one you should visit! Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains just off the I-77 corridor in North Carolina, you are just minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, Stone Mountain State Park and Mt Airy! There are several places to park your RV while visiting this beautiful area. Our favorite is the Stone Mountain State park campground. ( Another great little campground is Mayberry Campground ( near Mt Airy! Mayberry Campground is a Passport America campground. You can check out Passport America at .
There are several other wineries in this area and I believe some are part of Harvest Hosts. Are you a member of Harvest Hosts yet? Why not? For a small yearly fee you are allowed to stay at participating wineries and farms across the nation for free! Check them out at .
Or check out Bonndockers Welcome to see if there is anyone in the area that will allow you to boondock on their property. Go to to check them out.

NC RISING | Duplin Winery | UNC-TV
| Long before North Carolina was known for growing tobacco, the Tar Heel State was the largest grower of grapes and the leading wine maker in the union. That all changed after the Civil War and later prohibition. But today there's a resurgence of wine making in North Carolina and nowhere is that more apparent than in Duplin County. |
